I'm with Murph on this one. Initially I thought it was the press conferences that were negatively effecting her mental health. But it's more like a sports psychology point of view. That's totally different and not a mental health issue really. If she couldn't sleep because speaking in front of cameras was such a daunting issue and effecting her badly, that would be different. But if the reason she doesn't want to do them is because they question her ability or something, that's different. I agree with ken, sounds like she just threw the "mental health" thing in there because no one can question mental health.

100% agree with you and Ken as well. and very brave of Ken to say this in today's political climate

Though I don’t agree with Ken, he is fully entitled to voice his opinion. If he said it live on the BBC though, as opposed to a niche podcast, I think he would have caused a parliamentary enquiry/be at risk of death by firing squad/forced to hide in the sewers for the next 50 years.

    I agree with Ken.

How refreshing though it is to read your post respecting other people's opinion even if it's different to yours.

Honestly sick of hearing this "press conferences are part of being a professional tennis player" nonsense. 99.9% of press conferences are completely banal, uninspiring, insipid, media trained ****e. And tennis in particular seems to specialize in having absolute dunderheaded journalists asking some of the worst questions ever put on record. The fact there are any contractual obligations to go and attend these things is a joke.

Fair play to her I say. I hope she is genuine in her actions, and I hope she can get the help she needs.

It would seem immaterial whether you or any other observer is sick of hearing that, or think that it’s “nonsense”. What does appear relevant is the reality that press conferences are a key part of professional sport around the world. I suspect it’s also the same for many ‘elite’ amateur sports, it’s certainly the case in this country anyway.

I'd have a large degree of sympathy for Osaka. Most press conferences are pointless and the sports press are insatiable. She's obviously a shy young woman, and if she has anxiety, who the hell would want to have their day's work prodded and poked at by a room full of often aggressive reporters looking for a headline?

It's like having a quarterly performance review at the end of every workday. I'd go nuts.

In sports like rugby league in Oz it's gotten all out of hand. They send on touchline reporters to interview players after a try and at halftime before they go into the tunnel. Sod that.

Are they not? If that's what you believe then why not respond to what I said instead of name-calling?

Media organisations need content and access to athletes has never been harder. Press conferences are necessary but as Caitlin Thompson said yesterday there could be better policing and accountability of journalists who ask stupid, rude and defamatory questions.

Personally I don't want a situation where the only communication from athletes is through sponsorships or glossy Instagram posts

The Arsene Wenger one gets me even though I'm not a supporter. Something about the juxtaposition of Martin Tyler commentary when they won the league at Old Trafford, and the gobsh*tes of Arsenal fan TV calling for his sacking, with a bit of Sinead in the background, is jarring. It really portrays the two Wenger eras very clearly.

Is there any way to get a direct link? (i am a subscriber)

Murph got his Indiana Jones references all wrong yesterday.

Ken was referencing Last Crusade, Murph was talking about Raiders.

I was surprised, given that I once heard him reference The Leopard and Wayne's World 2 in a single sentence during one of those movie club episodes. The man knows his onions, thought I, that was a deft connection made between opposing sides of the cinematic spectrum.

And then he makes that schoolboy error about Indiana Jones. I tell you, he's gone down in my estimation after that.

When you say things like that about a man like Indiana Jones

Check out the bottom right panel of this David Squires cartoon for how to reference The Last Crusade in a soccer context

Ya, it's not great. Focusing on England having a bad game against Iceland and Ireland scoring goals even though they're not in the tournament. :(

They can't all be winners I guess.

On the other hand, Ken getting genuinely riled up by Nigel Farage was great.

I assume once the tournament starts proper they will switch to “We are the people” by martin garrix feat. bono and the edge

I only realised today that we won't be getting Ken's travelogue for the Euros. Damn you Covid!
