Hard disagree. Scumbag kids in Dublin City Centre are not right wing nor have any affiliation with such. Ken walked out of the Savoy Cinema into the middle of it. Do you know what it means to liken something to a Benetton ad as Ken did? As far from a right wing crowd as you can get. Labelling works, however.

Anyone else think Andy Lee didn't sound great there today?

Elements of the crowd targeted immigrants.

A Dublin Bus driver was pulled from his cab, racially abused and the bus set alight.

There were anti immigrant chants on the night.

There were known anti immigrant activists at the riot. They also called on their followers to get into the city to protest after an immigrant committed the brutal attack which started the whole thing off.

Just cos there were black people and middle eastern people there doesn't discount the right wing element which were present and riling people up on the night.

The person you're replying to already explained all this. Are you deliberately trying to obfuscate, or are you just unaware of that element to the riot?

Quit while you’re behind. It’s weird that someone so obviously far right would even be listening to a podcast where at least half the staff are socialists in the first place.

As someone who followed Andy’s career from his amateur days that is just his way of talking and I don’t see any difference at all. He’s doing incredible work with Joseph Parker as a trainer. There’s every chance he beats Daniel Dubois in his next fight and wins his second world title with a lot of thanks going to Andy.

Pretty disingenuous take, and very disingenuous representation of Ken's impression of the riots. He said he was surprised that many of the kids who piled on - specifically just the young teens who joined in - were quite benetton. But his whole impression of the night, across the whole podcast, was that this was a right wing anti-immigrant event. He literally says; "It’s instigation definitely was an anti-immigrant riot."

It's also been well established by this stage that prominent far-right activists were organising anti-immigrant mobilisation via whatsapp groups within hours of the stabbing. I'm sure you read some of the bloody horrible racist and violent right wing posts on the "enough is enough" group that day for instance.

Ignoring the "get them out", the two asylum centres attacked, and the Dublin Bus driver who was nearly lynched for the crime of being black. Not labelling, facts.

    I'm partial to your abracadabra,

I'm raptured by the joy of it all.

Nah, I think he sounded way lispier than normal. I've been following his career just as much and don't remember any lisp being as pronounced as that.

I am not far right, is the answer. More labelling. Looking forward to your future and regular idiotic takes in this thread.

I think yours is the disingenuous take, actually. Ken referred to the multi-cultural nature of the rioters. Far right rioters are not multicultural - kinda goes against the whole far right ethos. The instigation for the riot is Ken's opinion. I prefer to rely on what he said he saw rather than who he suspected.

I suppose it's two different things isn't it?

There's a difference between what or who instigated something and who participated in it. There was obviously some people who were ideologically motivated and then there's a lot of people who just participated opportunistically in the wider mayhem.

maybe some people don't mind listening to opposing viewpoints

I really don't know who would be interested in reading a book like Miguel's. Just seems so incredibly dull. Jonathon Wilson's books always sound like a cure for insomnia too. Did people actually go out and buy them for themselves, or is it generally Christmas gifts for someone who likes football?

I don’t know if you’ve heard but Miguel has a book coming out

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 550 ✭✭✭Tucker.Tim

He was on a phone in a gym and not in the studio as usual ffs. The first thing you can hear him saying is telling Paddy to do a long warm up, some people really want to find shadows in every corner.

Ah, to be fair to Jonathan he did write Inverting The Pyramid - which is one of the most important and influential books about football ever.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,066 ✭✭✭kksaints

Jonathan Wilson's books are excellent. Inverting the Pyramid and Angels with Dirty Faces are two of the best football books around. Behind the Curtain is a little outdated now but it's still a great read. Some of them are a little obscure particularly The Names Heard Long Ago but they're excellent reads and I'd definitely recommend them.

Books that don’t have audiobook versions don’t exist to me

Thankfully Miguel’s does so I may spend a free Audible credit on it

When I first saw what today's episode was about, I was thinking "hard skip". But I decided I'd give the first few mins a listen and ended up listening to about 10 mins of the interview with Miguel, and then I just couldn't take any more. As was said above, I just don't get who (apart from football bores maybe) would be interested in it.

Then I just saw his post claiming it was an "extended" episode of Second Captains to preview his book. Which seems a bit of a stretch to me.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 550 ✭✭✭Tucker.Tim

I mean it clearly is longer than the average episode, so

I think Miguel’s predictions about soccer are usually comically wrong but some in this thread would need to wind their neck in if they think soccer sport-washing doesn’t deserve its own book at a time when the Saudis are about to get the 2034 World Cup and City and their roster of lawyers are desperately trying to prevent their petro-club from being relegated to the National League and Jose becoming a Premier League winner with United. There is a total absurdity about this moment in time that separates it from everything that has came before it.

His book "Two Brothers" about Bobby and Jack Charlton was excellent too

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 19,777 ✭✭✭✭Ol' Donie

I haven't listened yet, but I fully intend to get Miguel's book over the next few weeks. Along with the Joe Canning and Richie Hogan ones.

I thought Miguel was great on that today, and his book sounds like a great read. I don't get the agenda against him

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 550 ✭✭✭Tucker.Tim

    Racist against Dublin people

    Which is fair enough really

I find it hard to tell some of the soccer writers they have on apart, don't get the hate for Miguel either.

Some hype over Brian Fenton retiring... God help us if Ciarán Kilkenny hangs up his boots.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,803 ✭✭✭✭siblers

The opening episode of Cover is excellent. Mark's narration style is a small bit annoying but it's not as grating as I thought it would be

I’m sorry but anyone who knows their football knows Fenton is probably the best pure midfielder of the last thirty plus years. Size, skill and speed. Kilkenny is not in the same postcode of importance.

It’s hard to imagine a more important single player in the six-in-a-row team.
