Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

    So they've gone from this:

    to this:

Spot the difference. I guess they've cut their font size to match their cut in 'discounts'!

(Edit, just to avoid confusion, the bottom one is only free with a €10 spend as go4it posted above)

FYI, if you move to a 'smart' meter electricity plan, you CAN'T move back to a non-smart plan.

You don't have to take a 'smart' meter if you don't want one, opt-out is available.

Buy drinks in 3L or bigger plastic bottles or glass bottles or cartons to avoid the DRS fee.

Better to get something free than be held to ransom to spend €30

It's not free though, that's my point. Read the super small print. You've fallen into the same trap I suspect lots of others will and be 'tricked' into buying something they assume is free.

Advertising standards of Ireland might like to look at the font sizes of that there...

That for sure wouldn't stand too long in countries with actual advertising standards.

I'd suggest you all go to ASAI's website to complain, but holy christ is it a pain in the hole, and a blast from the 1990's websites --- minus the scrolling text and gifs everywhere.

Particularly as many are looking at this on a phone. Lidl have lost the plot.

worth it for the digital receipts, so that I can see that (for example) the cat food we buy has increased by 45% in a year.

A perfect example of why Lidl are doing this. This will be the regular unless it's clamped down on, and with the speed, the cashiers go at, you'll have to be watching the till screen like a hawk.

the free items are gone and they wont be back going by the other countries that had the app first, this is the standard practice

they can keep their pretend free gifts and shove them

Always thought the Lidle app was a load of shee-ite but that it might be just me .

Mebbe the grim gimlet eyed beurs that prowl the aisles of the German Supermarket had cracked it and were loading their trollies with free goodies that poor Nev was unaware of ?

But no ...thankfully I see I was right ...and this excellent thread has vindicated my thoughts.

Thank you all soow muuuch ....

I was in a rush the last day, didn't fully check my receipt, later I read an item "handkerchiefs 1.99" and I can't account for it as the tissues I bought are on the receipt and nothing else adds to that.. That is my first experience of it with them as far as I know

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 19,688 ✭✭✭✭Muahahaha

I see next weeks brochure has a full page dedicated to explaining to customers how to get bananas, spuds, lettuce & apples to last for longer. My spidey senses were pricked here because Ive noticed a sizeable decline in how long their bananas last in the last few months. They go from green shading to fully yellow to developing brown spots in 3-4 days. I had thought to myself they might be buying cheaper fruit that doesnt last as long after purchase as thats certainly been my experience of late.

Im guessing that they have had lots of complaints about it and now their answer is to publish this telling customers how to store them in the hope of getting a day or two extra. Its no bad thing to be honest but to me there has been a definite decline in how long their fruit lasts compared to how long it lasted 12 months ago and this instructional leaflet would seem to confirm an attempt to head off complaints

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,637 ✭✭✭OmegaGene

As far as I know bananas all come into cork and dublin ports and then get packaged for the various shops

we picked some up from SuperValu and they went from green to brown spots in two days

In my opinion, fruit that lasts for a week or more must be full of chemicals. So your theory sounds wrong. From what I see, from growing some fruit myself with no chemicals it goes soft and ripe within 2 to 3 days and might get a 4th day out of it.

In other countries like Mediterranean ones, did you ever look at the fruit sold in the supermarkets. Would all be thrown out in this country. Fruit should not be in a package full of plastic first of all then people want their fruit to look all shiny, perfectly round and last for weeks.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 26,001 ✭✭✭✭zell12

Today was 50% off Raspberry Jam.

And you have to open the surprise the day you get it, otherwise it disappears

no sign of sausages on my local shop ...

Maybe the tourists bought them all, to try the Irish breakfast option ( with the price of beer in the pubs, it's cheaper to order a breakfast )

I picked up the roulade today, it’s possibly the first time I’ve picked up a “treat” in months. I’m also not sure what a roulade has to do with being Irish or St Patrick tbh!

Yeh very handy for the receipts, today i noticed that the iceberg lettuce went from 0.61c to 1.05€ within a year :/

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,927 ✭✭✭SouthWesterly

I've not bought lettuce in a long time. I grow my own

  • Registered Users Posts: 100 ✭✭bitent

It's scandalous. Every week I see another price rise on items I regularly buy.

I think it's hilarious when supermarkets such as Tesco promote "price match to Aldi" in-store when this has in fact raised the price.

These companies had the run of the place during Covid and have not passed those savings on to consumers at any stage.

  • Registered Users Posts: 463 ✭✭go4it

This sardines were ~€0.27 for a long time ( 2-3 years ) Was like the one in the picture or blank metal can with a carton wrapping; 25 to 27 cents depending on season ; used to be the cheapest item on the shelf

Now it's €0.47 ( i hear £0.32 in UK) and even at that price sometimes stock is at minimum levels...

Not all prices raised at once , and not all with same percentage, but sometimes i feel that retailers are increasing the price across the board, just to be sheltered from price inflation

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,507 ✭✭✭Nollog

I say that to myself every time Im in Tesco and see the hotdogs they almost tripled the price on to match aldi, and the extra euro on their 6 pack of energy drinks, and the extra 3/4 price on their 2L drinks, to name a few.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,710 ✭✭✭uli84

No issues with slugs? used to plant few of my own stuff but lost slug battle every time :/

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 26,001 ✭✭✭✭zell12

    50% off yoghurt was €2.49 now €1.24

The price rises might no longer be inflation related. I think it's moving towards margin expansion with the inflation situation providing perfect cover. No one is going to change shop for a €0.25 increase in a sardines can but spread that over all your shopping and it's a nice bonus for the retailers.

  • Registered Users Posts: 867 ✭✭✭crayon80

Went to Lidl at 8.05am to get the parkrun porridge and a few other things. There was none in stock, not even a SEL. 5 minutes into when the offer became valid! Staff couldn't tell me when or if it'll be back. But you can be damn sure it won't be before the parkrun offer expires.

There hasn't been a single offer worth activating in weeks, Lidl becoming worse and worse. I left and I'll go to Aldi iinstead after work.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 569 ✭✭✭EarWig

There must be massive changes happening in peoples shopping habits. But, we've yet to see it in the market share numbers.

I say that as someone who has largely abandoned Lidl.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,637 ✭✭✭OmegaGene

Lidl is still busy though, it’s very hard to change peoples habits, when Lidl first came to the U.K. I remember people laughing at the shop and walking around mocking it and it took a while before people started to realise it wasn’t that bad of an option, obviously Lidl tweaked a few things.

they do market research constantly to gain peoples opinions using companies like Irish opinions and red c

Even if fewer people go it might not be a negative profit wise if margins are pushed up enough on those that remain.
