Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

I was upstairs in gunpowder, the usual bog standard menu but was nice. Plenty in there at 5 on a Friday too.

Parking is ridiculous cheep tho, it's like 4 quid for 24 hours. That's nothing all things considered.

So we are still in need of a decent place to eat in Clondalkin village... the Himalaya and the place over the Roma chipper were great back in the day but both long gone and not coming back. Went to eat in at the Victoria and was underwhelmed, Pattaya even more so.

I didn't hear there was a fire in the Steering Wheel, what happened? Was that when the upstairs renovations were going on?

    Scrap the cap!

Still some good venues around clondalkin, the likes of Joels, Pandinis, Honghop and Woodfire n Wings but the village it's self could do with a bit of investment.

Bring back Claires pizzeria! In fairness the village is overrun with takeaways that aren't the best and a good restaurant would be welcome, I'd heard upstairs in the laurels where the treetop used to be was opening as a new restaurant a good while back but nothing since.

Your making me drool when you mention Claire's, the Mexican Taco 🤤 I still dream about them. I rarely get back up there these day's but still stock pile the Macari on Castle crescent onion rings uncooked when I do and freeze them for later use!

    Chauffe, Marcel, chauffe!

Already getting a bit of a name for itself. My daughter picked up a giant kebab pizza last week (I drove her over and paid for it 😅) and she said it was savage

Mao is now a kebab shop with a huge, unbelievably ugly sign.

    Scrap the cap!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 104 ✭✭halfpastneverr

That sign is horrendous looking alright. Gaudy as feck.

Village is looking a bit grim these days in general. Only food place I'd frequent there anymore would be the East Village on Monastery there for breakfast at the weekend.

I noticed the east village at the round tower has changed its name to the Monks Kitchen. Wonder what the story is there? Not making enough money or is the lease up?

    They posted this on Facebook:

    *UPDATE*

East Village Coffee is no longer involved with the management or operations at The Round Tower visitors centre. We really enjoyed our time there and leave with many happy memories but feel it is time to move on. As Clondalkin natives we were honoured to be entrusted by @sdublincoco with the running of such an important site which highlights Clondalkin’s amazing history. We wish Mark and the fantastic team @monkskitchenclondalkin all the best with their future endeavours.

We will continue as normal at the OG on Monastery Road and have some exciting plans for the future

So, new owners? Wonder if the menu will be different?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,353 ✭✭✭Frank Grimes

It's on their website https://monkskitchen22.com/ - I've never eaten in East Village so I don't know if it's different.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,380 ✭✭✭5500

AFAIK it was a sort of collaboration when they were in the tower with whoever is running the monks kitchen (wasnt the monks kitchen originally on tower road where the dentist is now at some stage in the 90s?) tbh I think the food was better on monastery Road than the tower, its a nice spot but something about it bugs me, I dunno if it's that it feels like a school cafeteria or something!, but still nice to have another choice for a decent breakfast or lunch in the village

In clondalkin or lucan? Clondalkin doesn't seem to be open yet?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,021 ✭✭✭✭anewme

Passed yesterday and the Gunpwder branding gone.

Treetop Restaurant and Steering Wheel bar

The Monks Kitchen was a cafe in Clondakkin years ago. Wonder if it’s the same people?

Yeah was Clondalkin. Is there one in Lucan too? Where?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,007 ✭✭✭con747

Not sure if there is one in Lucan, the last new place I heard of opening in Lucan was Baxto Kebab.

The xlkebab website gives their location as Primrose la lucan. No mention of clondalkin. It does list the clondalkin address but not under their location.

Anytime I've passed they've been closed. Been a few weeks though, should have got off the bus sooner tonight to give them a try.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,310 ✭✭✭✭Cienciano

Green corner closed unfortunately. Anyone know whats going in there?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,151 ✭✭✭Danye

It closed but I seen the lads who I thought ran it / own it (They were always there behind counter when I went in) renovating it and doing work. Now maybe they were cleaning it out, or maybe it’s coming back in a different version?

I don't see any planning notice up so the rumour that it's going to turn into (yet another) takeaway seems to be without foundation.

    Scrap the cap!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,310 ✭✭✭✭Cienciano

Hopefully it's not a takeaway. Somewhere with seats. A takeaway with seats wouldn't be great, the people that visit takeaways in clondalkin don't seem to know how to use a bin

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,310 ✭✭✭✭Cienciano

Oh ffs, it's a kebab house! You can see the other one from outside. Hopefully it's better than xl kebab which is terrible imho.

Planning application on the front to say it's opening hours are extending to 10:30pm and it's going to be a takeaway.

Just what Clondalkin needs, another poxy takeaway. Not even an alternative to the muck that's on offer currently either. Still annoyed that the proposed sushi place in auld Mr.Lam's turned into that pizza place, directly across from Four Star!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,310 ✭✭✭✭Cienciano

Yeah, planning permission sign is up so you can object still if you want. If it's authentic kebabs im not too bad, but xlkebab was supposed to be and it's woeful.

Worst part is the rubbish everywhere

Had a look a couple of days ago and I'm 99% sure the planning notice said 11:30pm

Can't imagine the houses opposite will be happy

How many kebab shops does Clondalkin need?

There’s approximately 4 dedicated kebab shops from the Credit Union to this new place. Include the Indian restaurants that also offer kebabs and Eskimo Pizza, that’s a huge amount of Kebabs in a small area.

    What’s going on there?

    Opening on Wednesday apparently

Anyone tried it? it looks a lot less garish than that horrendous XL place up the road at least I suppose.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,787 ✭✭✭✭Charlie19

Was in the carpark belong to castle vets last week and two of the guys from the restaurant where there cutting up a pallet with an angle grinder. If I wasn't preoccupied on the phone, I would've gave them something more appropriate out of the van.

Im sure their culinary skills are a bit better.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,007 ✭✭✭con747

What's it called the new place? An angle grinder for chopping wood 😂

I think it’s operated by the same person that ran green corner. It looks well inside and it seemed to by busy tonight.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,310 ✭✭✭✭Cienciano

Nah, different person. Last guy was from Tunisia, this guy is Turkish

Absolutely madness in there tonight, the first Friday. Ran out of lots of food, getting orders wrong. But suppose that's to be expected at the start. The important thing is the food is really good. I'd leave it for 2 weeks though.

Wife got some takeaway food from it. I reckon it'll be one of the best middle Eastern places in Dublin, it's top quality.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 35,528 ✭✭✭✭Hotblack Desiato

Haven't seen a menu yet, is it expensive?

    Scrap the cap!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,310 ✭✭✭✭Cienciano

It's a bit more expensive than a usual kebab place there's a menu on their instagram page.

Thanks. One of the kids grabbed a menu yesterday when they were going to the chipper (that really makes me sound like parent of the year material doesn't it 🤣 )

A bit pricy alright but what isn't these days. If the food is good then it's worth it I suppose.

Don't know if I mentioned it on here before but we went to the Treetops at the Steering Wheel twice earlier this year and the food was excellent, great to have it back.

I tried this Kebab place over the weekend. It was really nice. As mentioned above, the service is a bit all over the place and it can be manic.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,310 ✭✭✭✭Cienciano

I went again, sat inside. Really good. Service was good too. He's trying to get a wine licence,so should be bring your own then.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 35,528 ✭✭✭✭Hotblack Desiato

I thought they only needed a licence to sell wine, not for BYOB?

Can't figure out the pricing either. Doner plates are ~€13 but no side, shish plates are about the same but include rice or naan?

    Scrap the cap!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,310 ✭✭✭✭Cienciano

The plates include a naan. I don't think the wine licence is related to byo, might just be waiting to allow alcohol on the premises.

6 of us went over the weekend, everything was really good and he gave a load of starter free samples.

Had food from Sultan's Hann at the weekend. Really good and lovely staff. Will go back.
