Schedule update (since I'm out of edit time):

Qualifying has been moved up to the original Practice 2 slot, at 9:15pm.

Final practice will now take place at 12am; starting with a 30-minute dedicated session for certain cars to run in the high groove: https://www.indycar.com/news/2022/08/08-16-special-session. At 12:45am, a final one-hour all-car practice session will take place.

All sessions still available in full on INDYCAR Live, and broadcast on Sky Sports F1.

I'm hoping McLaughlin or Palou win this one just to make it competely mental.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 38,946 ✭✭✭✭eagle eye

Congrats to Will Power who just tied the great Mario Andretti for most Indycar poles.

After him it was Ericsson, Newgarden, McLaughlin, Palou and Dixon. All set up for a great championship race.

That was a great qualifying session. Looking forward to Ericsson and McLaughlin putting it to Power in tonight's race.

For some reason I think McLaughlin is going to win it tonight. My head, educated guess, says Newgarden but for some reason I can't get away from McLaughlin.

Looking at this first stint, will it be tyres or fuel that dictates the stops?

ROUND 16 — GRAND PRIX OF PORTLAND

I've never seen a championship like this.

    Currently the standings are

    • Will Power, 482.
    • Josef Newgarden, 479.
    • Scott Dixon, 468.
    • Marcus Ericsson. 465
    • Alex Palou, 434
    • Scott McLaughlin 428
    • Pato O'Ward, 424

    I'd pick Newgarden personally.

That's not ideal. Practice 1 stopped for a jumbo screen's hydraulics breaking and tilting over the track.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,684 ✭✭✭Charlie-Bravo

    Jumbo screen fail!

So Colton hammered that Armco 😬 qualifying on right now.

All going Penske's way. McLoughlin pole, Newgarden second, Power third. Dixon starting way back in 16th and Ericsson 18th.

Where can I watch this race? Don't mind paying.

Sky sports F1 normally have it.

McLaughlin brilliant again today with that win, mathematically he has an unlikely outside shot at the title next week at Laguna Seca along with Ericsson.

Realistically it's a 3 way battle between Power, Newgarden and Dixon. A 3rd place finish will secure the title for Will but the title far from a certainty for Will knowing Newgarden or Dixon will have a high percentage chance of winning the race at Laguna

    Will Power 523

    Josef Newgarden 503 (-20)

    Scott Dixon 503 (-20)

    Marcus Ericsson 484 (-39)

    Scott McLaughlin 482 (-41)

Following the cancellation and contraction of a lot of the F1 coverage this weekend, FP2 is moved back to SSF1.

Q1 Newgarden crashes OUT starts last. Dixon OUT of Q1 starts 13th

Surely Power can't screw this up now

Will Power on pole, 68th career pole and all-time Indycar record, bonus point gained on his +20 lead, championship contenders sagged 13th or starting last in 26th

It would be an all time disaster if he doesn't secure his 2nd Indycar championship tomorrow night he deserves it please follow through with it

Calum Illott starting 2nd, so talented

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,705 ✭✭✭Infoanon

That was a nail biter !, great qualifying session, thought Grosjean had pole , then illot and then Will Power grabbed it with a great lap.

Mario Andretti pure class and great to see him congratulating Power.

Thought qualifying group one should have been red flagged after Newgardens off and Josef may yet be in trouble for disobeying Marshal instructions (and team instructions ) to get out of the car.

Tyres will be crucial and luck with yellows will play a big part , Power now has a 21 point lead ,with Josef 25th and Scott Dixon starting from row 7.

Off track is also compelling , Zak Brown is at Laguna as the Palou contract dispute continue ,while those normally in the know are adamant that Herta will be racing for Andretti next season and not Alpha Tauri.

    New garden is flying

Power in the end secures his 2nd championship well deserved, incredible comeback drive by Newgarden today to make Power earn it

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,705 ✭✭✭Infoanon

Delighted that Will Power won the championship and got the all time pole record.

Newgarden was unlucky especially when you consider IOWA.

What a season for Penske , cutting back to a three car paying off.

Deserved it victory for Palou , his conciliatory words leading to confirmation in the last hour that Palou will indeed race for Ganassi in '23.

Felix stays at McLaren, the Herta situation to be resolved , he is gaining more F1 mileage for Alpine next week (they desperately want Gasly).

They talk about the big 3 in Indycar but the reality at the moment is there are just the big two - Penske and Ganassi , with Andretti and McLaren struggling to break the stranglehold.

As an aside all the Penske and Ganassi drivers have super licences.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,046 ✭✭✭Ohmeha

Relieved for Palou and delighted for Rosenqvist that this very messy saga is over and measured heads on all sides prevailed however Oscar Piastri probably indirectly forced both sides into resolution

McLaren are putting huge resources into this I think they will push Penske and Ganassi further next season but Indycar for 20+ years has been dominated by those two powerhouses and both in 2022 looked the strongest in years. Andretti look like a directionless team who have a bunch of expanding midfield teams only marginally behind them if Herta doesn't land that F1 drive he will surely end up with one of the top 3 teams for 2024

One season isn't the be all and end all. O'Ward and Hertha had top five finishes in the Championship the previous two years. Dixon and Newgarden also had top fives those two years.

It was disappointing this year because we expected those two drivers to step forward and battle for a championship with Palou, Dixon and Newgarden. In the end that never transpired with Palou taking a win in the last race to jump up to fifth with O'Ward seventh and Hertha tenth. Hertha had some bad luck with pit stops and full course cautions at the wrong time and engine issues but his super aggressive nature also cost him dearly.

McLaren were the best on Ovals but very poor on road courses. I'm sure they'll improve on that next year.

Andretti have a lot of work on, there's a lot of unhappy drivers there.

I can't wait, it should be a cracking season.

I'm very interested to see how Rossi goes in the McLaren.

I fancy Kirkwood to break out now back with Andretti.

I'm picking Scott McLaughlin to win the championship.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,705 ✭✭✭Infoanon

That was an exciting qualifying - Andretti one lap speed to the fore ,

    Spoilers ahead:

2 accidents in the final 6 shoot out ,

Kyle Kirkwood and Scott McLaughlin having separate incidents disrupted qualI but while Herta looked a sure shot for pole , it was Grosjean who beat Herta to the pole by .4 after Hertas scrappy lap.Pato O Ward lines up third.

Tyres will play a major part tomorrow and Penske appear to have an advantage, but Ganassi , an ever stronger McLaren and a revitalised Andretti will all be going for victory.

I know it's only one qualifying session but the performance of the Andretti cars is a really great unexpected curveball when alot of the pre-season interest was whether this expanded McLaren team will make it a dominant big 3 along with Penske and Ganassi. If Andretti are back performing to a high level in a big 4 this could be most unpredictable season yet with the quality of this 27 car field being the strongest since the 90s

Ah Grosjean. A little patience and the race was yours. Some battle though.

Yeah I don't understand why you take a chance like that when you know you'll get him after two more bends. Just stupid and it's one of the reasons why he fails to win races he should.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 38,946 ✭✭✭✭eagle eye

O'Ward is another who just kills himself with mistakes. Unbelievable, how can you make a mistake like that?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,705 ✭✭✭Infoanon

    O'Ward didn’t make a mistake - it was an engine issue .

Scott McLaughlin has apologised for making an error and taking Grosjean out. Scott also got a drive through penalty for the incident. Grosjean had to overtake before Scott tyres came up to temperature, Scott made an error , locked up and took Grosjean out.

Good day for JHR - Illot top 5 and Canapino showing he is no pay driver.

Looking good for an exciting season .

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 38,946 ✭✭✭✭eagle eye

Firstly, Grosjean knew what was going on and didn't need the overtake. He had a full lap to get by before the tyres get heated up. After another two bends there's a big straight run where he'd have easily got by him.

McLaughlin was always going to protect his position at the first bend, it always happens there.

McLaughlin apologising is just him being a nice guy. He'd do the same thing again every time he's in that situation just like every other driver.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,046 ✭✭✭Ohmeha

As much as I didn't see the Andretti's cars being back on the pace again I didn't see two of their cars going airborne and all round crashwreck on race day for them

Entertaining start to the season anyway with no injuries, pity it's a long 4 weeks until next round at Texas must have been another track in-line for March 19th that never materialised

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,680 ✭✭✭TheChrisD

Jay Frye, the president of INDYCAR, posted a video on Twitter showing the extent of the damage to Benjamin Pedersen's car after his t-bone of Devlin DeFrancesco's car.

While there is extensive damage to the nose section of the car, the main nose structure remained remarkably intact.

The primary focus however, is on the Aeroscreen; and emphasis is placed on the noticeable scuff marks which may have impacted Pedersen's head without it.

By the time you get through the one-lane esses in the middle sector of the lap, the tyres will have heated up sufficiently that Scotty could've easily burned a bunch of P2P down the backstretch to preserve the lead. So it made said that Grosjean wanted to get the pass done at the earliest available sensible opportunity.

No-one is complaining that Scotty decided to defend it. We're complaining because he fucked up (of his own admittance!) while doing so, ruining both races.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 38,946 ✭✭✭✭eagle eye

Let's go through the race to that point. Start of the race Grosjean sped away on the softer tyres leaving everyone in his wake and both Hertha and O'Ward also left everybody else well behind. It was only when their tyres went off that McLaughlin started to close. Grosjean stayed out too long and lost the lead to him and with McLaughlin on soft tyres and cautions putting him in a great position it looked pretty much all over but McLaughlin couldn't drop him despite having the soft tyres.

So after the next pitstops it's neck and neck with McLaughlin on cold tyres. His tyre aren't getting enough heat in them until the end of that run up the long stretch.

And even if he somehow managed to hold off Grosjean up that straight, how long is it going to last? He couldn't drop him on soft tyres, how is he going to stay ahead of him on the same tyres?

It made absolutely no sense to risk your race at that bend. As soon as he seen McLaughlin was going to block him he should have backed off. He'd have won the race if he did.

And I haven't even mentioned the push to pass situation with Grosjean having 25 more seconds than McLoughlin.

Despite what it may seem from various compilations or camera angles, St. Pete is actually really hard to pass on. Turn 1 was almost a no-go for most of the weekend — the many attempts in the INDY NXT race that didn't work were evidence of this — and your only other options are Turn 4 or Turn 10; but you're going to need to have a pretty decent time delta to pull off a pass in either of those two spots. Hence the want to get past as soon as feasibly possible, while McLaughlin's grip levels and thus braking and turning performance were hampered.

As for your suggestion that Grosjean back off, McLaughlin made his move and line very clear, almost immediately after exiting Turn 3. There was no late block, the move was telegraphed and committed to very early. Heck, Grosjean was ahead entering the T4 braking zone, so why on earth would he back out at that point? It's not like he could foresee McLaughlin trying it on with insufficient grip and sliding straight into the side of him.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 38,946 ✭✭✭✭eagle eye

I'm saying he should back off because you can't win the race if you are not in it and he was going to win it without getting through there. He had the faster car and more push to pass seconds.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 38,946 ✭✭✭✭eagle eye

Anyone else watching the Indianapolis 500?

I'm looking at Rossi at the moment. He's currently 7th, has been as high as 4th. His two teammates are first and second. He's never looked to pass anybody yet. Others go by him and he just lets them.

I think he's minding his car for the late run. He stayed out a lap longer than the leaders for his pitstop to get a lap on clean air.

I think its very odd that the top cars didn't pit there.

They are up against much better tyres now and could be behind them by the time they make their last pitstop. These guys that pitted can run flat out now knowing they are on the same strategy as the leaders.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 38,946 ✭✭✭✭eagle eye

Omg, I hope Kirkwood is okay.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 38,946 ✭✭✭✭eagle eye

Newgarden deserved that. He's been the best driver for a few years now and it was no surprise to see him competitive again. He's been cursed in this race for many years 'til now.
