Along with the fact that, as a nation, we're most comfortable when we're miserable? Maybe because it feels familiar? We also love moralising over others and their actions. There was a time you had to be an unmarried mother to get so much judgement and vitriol off other people. Now you just have to go more than 5km away from your house.

Chief, I get it. You didn't like it at home so you moved to Germany. So fair enough, don't be subjecting me to your angst about your homeland.

I think the gov is moving way too slow with the plan but expect a pivot....but not prepared to watch an expat sniping at his own, putting yourself on a pedestal for emigrating.

I'm sorry that you're upset that some of us have the education, skills and get-up-and-go to go somewhere else. I also didn't realise that I'm not allowed to have an opinion on my own home country! Lord bless us and save us! How many Our Fathers should I say?

Expat? No, I'm an immigrant. It's not a dirty word. Don't worry, you'll be begging for my German taxes when Ireland runs out of money. It won't be long, and it won't be the first time. But it's good to see the good old fashioned Irish begrudgery coming out. You're miserable, so everyone else should be too.

I laughed hard. We bloody live here, dont you think that majority of people living in Ireland have already seen everything here?

    Is this a joke?

And you're in the right country for someone who hates to see others doing well and wants to sit on their arse taking handouts for as long as possible.

Bet you weren't slagging off the Germans when they were paying for your dole 10 years ago.

Opening the schools is the easiest part of it. Keeping them open will be more difficult. There's no point in opening them up in a way that doesn't allow them to reliably stay open.

The chief medical officer said: “If that’s the right response at a point in time, then that might be the response exactly.

Why are you so angry that people through no fault of their own have been put out of work and have no choice but to rely on this payment? I don't understand why you think an average family in Ireland would be living a life of luxury on this. As Ive pointed out some people spend this and more on a bottle of wine.

Oh come on Betty, ffs. People don’t have to be living in luxury for this payment to be considered a bad idea. Below are two examples for you to get your head around.

    1. For some people, the 350 exceeds what they would have earned anyway. They don’t have to be living in luxury for them to conclude that 350 for no work is way preferable than 250 for some work.

    2. For some people, the 350 will be less than they earn but given the opportunity to work 40 hours for 500 or to work zero hours for 350, most rational minded individuals would take the 350.

That Supermac’s guy is right. These people just won the lotto and it would be disastrous for them if it were to end any time soon. Now Betty.....where was the luxury in any of that?

You know, you’re right. That’s why, adopting your and his logic, I’ve decided to trade in my vehicle and walk everywhere from now on. That way I’ll never get myself into a car accident: safe and logical. I mentioned a few posts back an analogy of not wanting a certain type of individual alongside you if you were in trench warfare. You (and that Cork boy 53 guy) were the two I had in mind when I wrote it.

The dangerousness of Covid-19 was overestimated: probably at no point did the danger posed by the new virus go beyond the normal level. What is the normal level.

Is that all you’ve got as a comeback? I assume then that you’ve accepted everything he’s presented to you?

How come there were no reports of simultaneous excess mortality for non Covid reasons so?

In fact most GPS and doctors up until recently were wondering where all the usual serious illnesses were. There's been no reports of people dying en masse for non-Covid reasons.

The only thing that data points to is a huge rate of excess deaths in the early months of 2020. You can't explain that away by saying it's solely down to a lack of access to medical care at - coincidentally - exactly the same time that a novel and comparatively dangerous virus was introduced into the populations, and across many different jurisdictions, with entirely different standards of healthcare.

Those usual serious illnesses are still there, they've not gone away!! They just haven't been diagnosed yet.

It's one of two things, either they've stayed away from their doctor because that's what they were told to do. Or they've gone to their GP and been told they couldn't be referred at the moment (and that WAS happening). If it was urgent then yes they would be referred, but my own GP told me that he couldn't refer people for investigative tests that he really felt they needed.

So the people dying "en masse" from non Covid related illnesses won't be seen immediately obviously, but so many lives will be shortened (some by a lot) because of lack of access to care.

And, yes, I do know that the world is in the grip of a pandemic and of course the knock on effect is epic. But it's just this one part of the plan that angers me, I couldn't care less if i can't get to the pub or get my hair cut or have a browse around the shops! But I feel that the health of one set of people is being sacrificed to save another set of people. Who's to say one life is more important than another?

Can anyone shed light on the definition of community transmission? Have researched but it’s murky.

    To date,

40% approx of all cases are from clusters
32% approx of all cases are healthcare workers

How is community transmission at 40% of total confirmed cases then?

If you are infected at a meat plant and bring it home to your family is that local or community transmission?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 25,222 ✭✭✭✭pjohnson

Wow I know theres the usual boards lot who whinge about "their taxes" but a foreign member complaining about "their taxes" being used in Ireland is a new impressive level of whinge.

The percentages that they release are totals from the start.
Community transmission has dropped from 60%

Firstly, if you actually read my post:
    I am Irish

Secondly, oh yeah, isn't it terrible how someone might expect Ireland to get up and go back to work like every other country, instead of relying on EU handouts. Why do you think Ireland is so special that everyone should be holding their paper cups out to the EU? Is Ireland too good for that?
Ireland doesn't even properly use the taxes that are paid in Ireland - unless you disagree and think the HSE is in some sort of acceptable condition.

Why are you so outraged by my comment?
I've asked a relevant question, the labour market will be very different in the coming years and perhaps adjustments will be needed.
The OP did single out a specific nationality but my comment is not about any specific nationality, it's about the relative generous policy that enables language students to work in Ireland.
We're not afforded that same privilege in NZ, Australia, Canada and America.

I don't think there was any outrage. The poster asked should they be tarred too after your comment about 'unfeathered' access. The word is actually 'unfettered'. It was a play on words. Tarred and feathered. Yeah?

You seem to have a bee in your bonnet re people wanting to holiday abroad. Once this crisis passes, holidaying abroad is great for broadening ones horizons. Many on our Emerald Isle could do with this badly judging by some posts on here.

And for posters using the ‘call to support Ireland’ approach to asking people to holiday here, you go first. Pay €2000 for 10 days in mixed weather with nowhere to go in Ireland and enjoy. I support many Irish businesses regularly but its not a requirement to live here that we just let ourselves be ripped off because ‘we should support local’.
The tribalism coming out during this crisis is eye opening...

I just find it ironic that posters want lockdown to end for economic reasons...but don't want to support the economy.

    God help our SMEs

Hard-hit SMEs get ‘paltry’ €11m worth of loans under State scheme

Only €11 million worth of loans have been provided to small businesses affected by the pandemic under the Government’s main support scheme, a figure which was described as “paltry” by the head of the Irish Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (Isme) association.

    https://www.irishtimes.com/business/economy/hard-hit-smes-get-paltry-11m-worth-of-loans-under-state-scheme-1.4267109?mode=sample&auth-failed=1&pw-origin=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.irishtimes.com%2Fbusiness%2Feconomy%2Fhard-hit-smes-get-paltry-11m-worth-of-loans-under-state-scheme-1.4267109

Damn thats a very very low amount. About 240,000 SMEs in Ireland in total.

    or seemed to have been

"Rise in pension age back on cards due to cost of Covid-19

Controversial changes to the pension qualification age, raising it to 67 years next December, are now expected to go ahead - despite a range of General Election promises this would not happen."

What's it like going from probably the worst run country in Europe to the best ? I hear they even have good public transport there. Bottle and can return schemes. No boil water notices in 2020... rules are upheld, antisocial scum not bent over backwards tir like here ... no endless welfare and excuses. Congratulations on the move. I agree with your sentiment. We shouldn't be bailed out again, because the morons here thought shutting everything down for months on end and paying all recently unemployed e350 as a blanket payment, was some genius idea! Banana republic!

Yup. This all needs to be paid for. Expect more measures. I mean we can't just have people staying at home, being paid by the government indefinitely
