Joe is 100% correct. And I'm serious

Let people take a test at the end of first year!!!!!!! This is how it works in the USA - your grades in first two years determine what programme you go into, and so you speicalize in years 3 and 4

Joe has found the solution - he speak imminent sense, and Joe McHigh should be listening.

He loves running an agenda but I agree, general entry as per UCD science courses is the way forward. Let everyone do a standard core 1st year course perhaps with some extra modules geared to their interests. Then sort them out after 1st year, let them figure out if it's for them and what area to apply for. Would p*ss off a few who know exactly what they want to do but sure what's another year these days.

No he's not. And it's very simple.

If you can only teach and train say 200 Medical Students in a year and 5,000 people want to do it how do you accommodate the other 4,800? Many courses are ridiculously over-subscribed - that's why we have a points system.

You're missing the point Butters, old style thinking.

You don't put 5,000 into medicine. They go into a general entry year and then apply towards end of that...... not that hard to figure out :)

The most intelligent person I have worked with was one of the porters. He and I used to do IQ & advanced aptitude tests during our coffee break, for a bit of entertainment. He could solve the most obscure problems, like a human computer he was. Zero education, was sick as a chiseler, left school at 12. No problem he could not solve in a matter of seconds.

That's not what he's saying though. He's saying they should be allowed into whatever course they want.

If you do a general course you're just extending the ourse by a year. Take Med and Accountancy - there's no general course you can do that will cover the syllabus for both in Year 1.

As usual, this is ill thought out reflex horsemanure from Mr. Duffy.

I'm not, that's not what he's saying if you listen. He's saying let them do whatever they want/let them do their first choice - which is very different from a general entry model.
