But according to some around here, Leo and the gang are doing super job of handling this...

My fcukin hole they are!
We should definitely be comparing ourselves to Iran and the US, the two most upstanding first world countries. Not.

Massive numbers again from France, 1340 deaths this evening

You just become numb to such large statistics really, hard to appreciate how many lives are being lost. I still remember a few weeks ago at the beginning of the epidemic when news broke that 130 people had died in Italy in one day, and my whole family and I just aghast at such a huge death toll. Look what was to come

Have you any detail or are you just quoting worldometers.

I believe they add on nursing home deaths periodically.

Not saying it's good but it's different if 500 deaths are nursing home deaths from the last 3 or 4 days rather than 1340 deaths today.

I don't look at these press conferences the govt have, but from following commentary on here they must be fecken indecipherable. Are they speaking in Swahili, or what? Nothing seems to be straightforward.

A Dublin politician has posted online that ICUs in the Mater, Beaumont and Connolly are full. Can anyone confirm? (I don't wish to read all the posts in The Daily Blur thread)

If they are full, what now? Consultants start deciding that anyone over 60 doesn't get one when available?

I thought extra ICU capacity was being built?

Yesterday a Dr. said same to Zara King on Virgin Media News

The number of new cases and deaths change daily like from 18 to 23 to 28. But why does the serious/critical number always stay around 165. Is that icu cases, or on ventilators? And why no change? ....are we topped out at 165 vents??
And where are today's 28 deaths from?? I'd suspect it's flying through a few nursing homes.. but we are not being told. All we hear is there are 40 clusters in n. homes. Like what's going on??

Jeez! They are no-where near the headlines compared to Italy and Spain. I guess we're all getting used to seeing these atrocious figures. Unfortunately I have a feeling the UK is going to be up there in a few more days.

And whats your point. Your 1 millions deaths are bad. Has is 28 today and there familys.

In the vast majority of deaths the death is completely natural. Death is not “bad” in most cases and it’s absolutely inevitable for every single human.
Spending your life being afraid of dying or being afraid of people you love dying will ruin your quality of life which is totally unnecessary because there’s nothing we can do about it except try and live a healthy life.
It’s always very sad for the ones left behind but people come to terms with their loss eventually and find a way to go on.

Who might have done a better job?

A health minister who wanted a rugby match cancelled because 5k Italians would be in a crowded station.
Our current health minister said it was fine for them to come and be "out and about" in Dublin.
No screening, no quarantine to discourage them from coming, no coincidence that Dublin is where around 55% of cases are.
Carelessness with allowing people in and no quarantine made this far worse.

The department of health also said it was not their guidelines to cancel visits to nursing homes, when the body over nursing homes said people shouldn't visit nursing homes.

We shouldn't be saying "who might have done a better job?" as if doing a bad job should be acceptable and applauded as being doing a good job.

There is a reason we had a general election, it was down to the health minister doing a bad job, nothing has changed.

There is only so much the guards and the government can do. this is a global pandemic, and restricting movement as they are trying to do is limited in its effect.

People need to stand up to their obligations on this.

Going to holiday homes is nuts. Why? because it gets people into the mentality that they are away from an urban centre therefore they are less likely to get it (never mind spread it).
Their guard will drop and they will go into shops, hang out on streets etc etc rather than going out x1 or x2 max per week to shop.

Unfortunately, you can tell the guards anything such as you were visiting elderly parents to do shopping for them, going to or coming from. Then drive on down the road and do whatever u like really.

Anybody else notice those who called for lockdown since February, screamed about not government not doing enough, and said at the start of these new restrictions that they did not go far enough, have now transformed into been worried about Civil Liberties, Human Rights and freedom of movement ?

Have a look at this post I made earlier in the thread

"average" covers a number of different measures, including mean and median

Come on stop being pedantic. You know most people take average as add up the age of everyone that died and divide it by the number of people that died.

Are FG that stuck that only Simon Harris can be their health minister?

    Standard lines trotted

1"are there still delays with testing?" Answer" th iui s is a worldwide issue we should be up to speed in a few weeks , but the point of testing is public health, all those tested or waiting for a test, shouldassume they have it and self isolate"

    2. Iz there an exit strategy? Answer " we are evaluating the data, when the time is right we will advise lifting restrictions"

And so on and so forth

About a quarter of the time they answer questions by saying they dont have the data to hand

It would be great if the gov came clean with the death stats rather than deliberating obfuscating and biasing the age stats upwards

They are not doing that, they are giving the appropriate measure of central tendency for the situation. If you don't understand that, you have missed a fundamental point.

Philip Nolan said for every 5 cases we detect there are 5 we don't detect.

So the real number of new cases today is 1000.

    Not my stats, theirs.

Hes assuming it in his model, he doesn't know it. Seems reasonable as many people have very mild symptoms.

I'd rather not say. I'm usually a huge fan of them, hence they're the only politician on Socials that I follow

But I'm now less of a fan if the statement they made re; ICUs is hyperbole

I don’t see what is to be gained from making that announcement. It’s actually very reckless. There’s a risk of people getting into a panic and trying to move near to a hospital that isn’t full.
If it’s a lefty politician making the allegation then that’s just lefty stuff. There isn’t a tragedy they won’t try to use to make a political point for their own gain.

Do you think Louise O'Reilly SF would be doing a stellar job here?

I seriously doubt it, and I don't think many others would have confidence in her either.
