    Ride assertively. As the RSA say in one of their cycling videos; "Stay well clear of the kerb and take the space you need to cycle safely. You are as entitled to your road space as any other road user."

    It may seem counter-intuitive to a novice, but hiding in the gutter is not the safest place. The road surface is often at its worst there, debris is most common, and most importantly, it encourages bad overtakes - the ones who just push straight through a narrow gap without pulling out to give you room.

    Stay well out 800mm-1000mm and take primary position when you really need them not to be overtaking you.
