I have not observed any Garda checkpoints since the Easter bank holiday week-end.

I have just observed Garda in mobile patrol vehicles, No checkpoints.

The Go Safe speed vans are out though:)

We're very rural and they have been stopping traffic here since Thursday, having been absent Tuesday and Wednesday.

Loads of people went back to work and all that shouldn’t have after the bank holiday, because we all know at this stage that there’s always a burst for a BH weekend and then nothing. Massive jump in traffic, etc from Tuesday too.

I'm not disputing the bulk of that but when stopped at a checkpoint yesterday the Garda, whom I know well as he lives in our parish, said it was easy and welcome overtime for him

Welcome overtime because there isn't much around!
But seriously, this pandemic is not causing a huge overtime bill, and gardai changed their shift patterns no problem in order to deal with it.

Ouch, that's a hammer blow of a reply! Previous poster could be smarting after that!

Not really. If you believe all that spin you’ll believe anything. We’ll know what the bill will be in a few months, it’ll be considerable. To hire those cars they drafted in will be big. Probably €800+ each per month. Money we don’t have with touching 25%+ unemployment. But if people are happy to see Gardai check car boots for groceries vs spending public money on PPE then it’s money well spent in their minds.

Did those coppers look like they were in the mood to look at IDs?

Not to me, they didn't. But even if he's not a journalist, why did they need to scare him away and stop him filming? I know you're not naive enough to believe it had anything to do with social distancing.

Had he taken out an ID to prove he was a journalist instead just being one of the many people who use that excuse to police then he would have been fine. If he was working for the BBC or the Guardian he would have just showed his ID and that would have been the end of it. But instead he behaved like a spoilt child instead of just going and proving it like a professional journalist would.

The coppers have a right to move him on under their new powers if he wasnt moving about exercising, which he clearly wasnt. They were just doing their job, simple as. Sadly there will always be dicks who go out of their way to make their job more difficult.

There was a lad stopped as a passenger in a taxi out by the airport somewhere. He said he was on his way back from doing his shopping. When his bags were checked, the Gardai found 20k worth of cannabis.

Interesting to note that when crowds gathered on Westminster Bridge last night to applaud health workers there was no social distancing whatsoever and certainly no 2m rule observed. The police looked on.
It seems that those who applaud health workers cannot pass on this virus as they have immunity!

How many of these applauding the N.H.S. voted Tory a few months ago?

The hypocrisy from Boris is so typical. His mate Cummings wants to abolish the NHS. The Tories have always cut the NHS budget.
Keep politics out of this thread - UK politics is particularly off-topic

    Thanks

Do you every make a comment about the Gardai that's correct? You were told before that the roster had been changed and yet here you are once again making false claims

So you have seen the Gardai driving in-between checkpoints. Well done you.

We are all well aware you have an issue with the go safe Vans. You don't stop going on about it and again I point out that those Vans shouldn't bother you because you are of course not speeding. Correct?

If he had reached for his pocket, those guys would probably have shot him or tased him. You don't need an 'excuse' to film the police in a public place. They should have no fear of being filmed.

It's fairly obvious to anyone who watched the video that this was nothing to do with exercise. This was about making sure the arrest wasn't recorded so they couldn't be held accountable.

    It's just bullying.

Held accountable for what? You don’t think it’s incredibly rude to shove a camera phone in someone’s face?

I was out yesterday to collect a prescription for an elderly parent and then going straight home. I had the script on the seat beside me.

Got stopped at a checkpoint, rolled down the window and first thing Garda says to me is: "On your way to your second holiday home"? "

    I replied" What? "

He then repeated": "On your way to your second holiday home?"

Completely out of order to a compliant motorist and I'll be videoing from now on.

The answer to that question is “ No officer, I’m just heading to the pub”.

Have been in the UK dealing with a family matter, the death of an elderly relative and her surviving 90 yr old husband. Been self isolating for 35 days in London. Am coming home to Clare on Thursday and will be driving from Dublin Port to Clare. What is the situation with the Gardai and roadblocks. Will be self isolating when I get home. Is there anything I need to know. How zealous are they being?

    Watch the video again;

He was filming from a distance, at least 2m away. It was the coppers who came up 'in his face' to stop him from filming.

But even if it is 'rude', there's no law against rudeness. Cops don't get to bully people out of their way, even if they are rude.

No officer, on the way home from the pub. After ten pints I said to the lads I'll go home for the dinner and come back around 9.

Make sure you have the phone in your hand and the guard can see it as you approach the checkpoint, you don't want to miss anything:pac:

The ticket for use of a phone while driving a car will be in the post if seen.

    It’s called media policing.

Same thing happens most bank holiday weekends. Big coverage in the media few days beforehand.

Then maybe a few checkpoints but never anything like what’s portrayed through the media.

There was checkpoints last weekend but as someone mentioned not a sign of any when people were going to work Tuesday morning onwards.

But we know that you can only go two kms from your home at the weekend on your time off but could drive 200kms for work daily....
