    Checkpoints all finished now. I wonder will we ever experience something like that in our lifetimes again.

    Hopefully not. While I think the Gardai generally did a decent job over the last few months they are dangerous powers to be giving to agents of the State and it wouldn't be good for them to get too used to having them.

    Gardai are pussycats compared to some foreign police forces.


    I would call them professionals, not pussycats.

    I was hugely impressed by the diplomacy and civility of our gardai. In stark contrast to forces elsewhere who use drones to track people taking country walks, or shout at them with megaphones. That's apart from the lunatics passing for police in the US.

    I was disappointed to see armed gardai very visible at some routine checkpoints.

    Why? There was serious armed criminals moving drugs around at the time. The guards needed armed support.
