    Thanks.

is the Tropical any use? Used to love Blacks’ beers but I think they’ve gone a bit downhill.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,711 ✭✭✭squonk

True Ben. Stormy Port was nice and time was I’d always have a bottle of Buried At Sea somewhere in the house as I loved it. Then they detached the bothers to 330ml cans but Keith the price relatively high and then they just discontinued it. The Red and Bay Ale were never particularly spectacular I think but they kept those. For some reason I haven’t taken to Ostara. It’s grand but just doesn’t have that seeing that Stormy or buried had. Not been in the Salt House at the evening for a long time but I was in the Black Sheep a few tunes in Dublin in the last few years. Expensive beer and expensive yet indictable food was my impression. Oslo was much better in the times I ate in there back in the day.

I think blacks are a solid brewery. Hence the purchases. Had tropical before, nice on a warm evening. With the amount of cans I bought, they will be consumed closer to may June than next few weeks.

Lad, seriously, turn off the predicted text, every time I read one of your posts I think I'm having a stroke ;)

Think I'll pick up a couple 200 Fathoms tomorrow, just in case it's the last ever produced. 😥

Order went in late on Thursday night (Friday morning really 😉 ) and was delivered 15 minutes ago, that's amazing. Thought it'd be Tuesday in a normal week, Wednesday given the bank holiday.

The cans don't have the Re-Turn logo but I can confirm the barcode is included in the list L1011 posted here (bloody well ought to be, as they did charge me 15c per can) : https://www.boards.ie/discussion/comment/121704628/#Comment_121704628

Rascals are out of stock on all core beers... hardly surprising!

Incidentally I took my first trip to an RVM this morning doing the weekly shop, first machine I tried rejected everything. Tried the next one and all were accepted. Some GBB (yeah, I know I said I never buy it, but it was 4 for €10) with the logo and some White Hag without, both bought in Lidl with the shelf edge notice that they had to be brought back to their store 🙄 and I'd been charged 15c per can for them. It also accepted a Kinnegar which had been bought with no deposit 😁

Fk sake, I signed up to their mailing list ages ago and made a few orders from them too, heard nothing about this. Sold out. Great way to treat your customers.

More freebies... Budvar 4-pack bought yesterday in Dunnes with no deposit (actually, nothing on their shelves had a deposit!) and the barcode on each can is in the Re-Turn list 👍️

I've never seen Budvar in cans in Ireland before now, how long have those been available?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 899 ✭✭✭DrZeuss

Picked up a few in O Briens Wines yesterday, To OI and Kinnegar. Was informed that most of the Craft beers were under the new scheme and would be charged, no problem lets try this new scheme out.

Had a look at the cans when I got home, no Re-Turn logo so thought I was duped. Checked the website and the barcodes were registered (although why they don't have a scan to check rather than manual entry is an odd choice). Check their twitter page and on the 1st and 2nd Feb they said the below. 😵

I can't see an obvious answer to this on any of the press releases; does the display price not now have to include the deposit?

Or are we expected to do the north american thing of having to calculate the full price ourselves before we get to the till?

  • Moderators, Recreation & Hobbies Moderators Posts: 11,914 Mod ✭✭✭✭BeerNut

American option for me in SuperValu today. Yee haa.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,007 ✭✭✭Pen Rua

And, from memory, the German way too. Prices are marked €x plus €y pfand.

In Dunnes since early last year I think. My local Molloys had them for a while too, but not recently alas. One of my favourite beers and one which always attracted a strong price premium when in bottle.

Bought 4 althea in Lidl pre scheme for 6.49. They have logos on them. I’ll stick through machine to see what happens.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 69,551 ✭✭✭✭L1011

Be prepared to possibly spend quite some time putting them through - GBB barcodes are black on silver or black on grey and hence a bugger to read.

But Althea cans will work, eventually. I found that putting GBB stuff in head-first read easier but different models of machine will be different.

  • Registered Users Posts: 136 ✭✭Tinter Box

Bizarrely these are black on white!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 69,551 ✭✭✭✭L1011

You'll be fine then - different run of cans to my disasters clearly.

Hopefully the "actually read properly" ones are the newer ones.

Well the rest of the Polish fridge is still there for now, but the Polish Tyskie has been substituted with weaker and less flavoursome Grolsch-brewed "Tyskie"

Dark days ahead for fans of any low-volume imported beers.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 69,551 ✭✭✭✭L1011

Surely the Polish Tyskie was in glass and hence not in scope?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 35,513 ✭✭✭✭Hotblack Desiato

    Nope, cans imported from Poland

Yes, and it applies to all pricing advertising! Samples from the Return deck on branding:

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 17,153 ✭✭✭✭the beer revolu

They don't add it onto the price, though, they just indicate that it needs to be added on.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,666 ✭✭✭adaminho

Just on the deposit return thing, I passed the back of the local Dealz the other day and there is several orange bins marked return. I wonder is there a separate collection truck for them?

  • Moderators, Recreation & Hobbies Moderators Posts: 9,722 Mod ✭✭✭✭Twee.

Ah yeah, it's not part of the price of course as you get it back but the pizza ad sample just made me lol. I can't see my local chipper & Chinese updating their flyers with this sort of stuff!

Going to take a machine for a spin today, finally have a bottle to return :D

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,711 ✭✭✭squonk

I tried a few yesterday. It’s free money for me at the moment as I’m run through my stock of Kinnegar cans bought before Christmas with no DRS added on. Overall though I do think the whole thing is going to just turn into a massive pain in the hole.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 17,153 ✭✭✭✭the beer revolu

What? You're getting a return on cans that you never paid the deposit on?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 69,551 ✭✭✭✭L1011

Kinnegar have registered (most? all?) of their barcodes as international barcodes meaning all existing stock will refund also.

Yeah and a White Hag sour also registered too.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 44,034 ✭✭✭✭Basq

Same on an Irish IPA I picked up last Friday..

Using this to scan barcodes.. not sure if it's been posted already but handy: https://re-turn.shanehastings.ie/

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 899 ✭✭✭DrZeuss

I wonder is it all craft beers. Just tried TWH Little Fawn that I got prior to Christmas and its in the scheme. Also tried Kinsale Tropical (part of a 96 can deal last week) and that's included.

That just made that Kinsale deal even better (€14.40 free money, cashback).

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 44,034 ✭✭✭✭Basq

Another Bran And Sceolan I got a fortnight ago wasn't eligible.. so probably depends on when produced.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,711 ✭✭✭squonk

Yeah. The Western Herd cans I’ve tried haven’t scanned on the site. I bought them before Christmas too. They don’t seem to have upped their prices either to include the deposit but no complaints anyway as I just dump them in the recycle bin at home afterwards as always.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,459 ✭✭✭Blisterman

Anyone know what you're supposed to do with cans that don't scan? My local Tesco refused to take them, so I took them home. But if I wasn't heading directly home afterwards, I'd have had to throw them in the general waste bin.

Is there any way of forcing them into the machine? I'd rather not lose an arm in doing so!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 69,551 ✭✭✭✭L1011

Take them home. Most Tesco stores would have a bottle bank with aluminium bins though

There is no way of putting them in to the machine if it doesn't take them, don't try.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,082 ✭✭✭TaurenDruid

Which is a basic design flaw. The whole point is supposed to be to increase recycling and discourage waste (and not to employ lots of people in yet another quango). So if a can doesn't scan, just have it say "can't be scanned, deposit anyway?" - or end up with with a load of cans that would have been put in recycling at home get dumped in a general waste bin, or a ditch.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,007 ✭✭✭Pen Rua

Tesco Paul St Cork, and others judging by pics on Twitter, have bins beside the machines inviting customers to recycle rejected cans.

Back to Ireland after a holiday, so haven’t interacted with the new scheme yet. Used the barcode scanner tool someone shared and a couple of the cans I have pre-scheme seem to be scanning ok on the tool.

It would be a bigger design flaw to include the functionality you mention only for it to become obsolete in a couple of months when there is no longer any significant amount of non-deposit cans on the market.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 35,513 ✭✭✭✭Hotblack Desiato

All of the machines I've used so far have a chute for rejected items.

    Scrap the cap!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 69,551 ✭✭✭✭L1011

None of the ones I have have had one. Tesco had a bin. Lidl/Aldi take it away

Lidl and Aldi have very different machines depending on whether it's inside or in a hut and may even have different machines between stores even then, though.

Email in from Rascal’s. Their core range is getting a makeover and going to 440ml cans. And they’ve done a beer with Kinnegar, nice.

Noticed that Bradley’s have cans in from Northern Monk, Sierra Nevada (Hop Bullet as opposed to just the core stuff), and To Øl. Guessing they’ve figured a way to be complaint with the short run stuff.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,459 ✭✭✭Blisterman

Based on Craft Central's website, To Ol, Mikkeller, Northern Monk, Tiny Rebel, Lervig, Left Hand and Ska among others have cans with a deposit payable. So I assume they're all registered.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,459 ✭✭✭Blisterman

Well not really, since there'll always be dented cans the machine rejects or cans with missing labels etc.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,082 ✭✭✭TaurenDruid

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,007 ✭✭✭Pen Rua

Happened to need to run to the shop, so brought a can on which I paid a deposit, and one which I did not (a Hazy Jane from Brew Dog). The machine accepted both, and I went away with my €0.30 voucher.

The machine at Aldi Elysian in Cork had a little bin to deposit rejected items also.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,711 ✭✭✭squonk

My local Aldi has that bin. I think they should take rejected cans anyway. It’s only a software alteration. To be honest I’d feck my can in general waste in the bin outside the shop just to give them the finger. I’ve enough to be carrying with my shopping without used cabs as well.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,492 ✭✭✭10-10-20

Damn right. Does it even crush the cans? It would be even less of an issue if it crushed at the same time.
