That's mad... Hopefully things start moving again, Good to hear a bit of positive news anyway

Wouldn't go by the oom im less than 150 and know a lad over 1000 both at the same stage.

When you say same stage what stage are you guys at? After interview I was in the 400s. I have my medicals physicals all done and when emailing about my vetting I was told it has been approved. Surely if I don't get called in this 450 its a no go then? When did he say they would be taking in the 450 from?

Didn't read it. Drew Harris said it. 450 to be recruited which would be a nett increase of 150.

I stand corrected , I was just going off rte news report, apologies
At least there is some noise being made , was very silent since the budget , when we all got excited about the 650

If Templemore is reopening 22nd of March, is this just for previous intakes to complete their training or will there be a new intake going in in March? If not does anyone have any idea when a new intake is going in?

It’s opening for probationers and trainees , so the members who got tossed out to the front line with no training will be first in , then new intakes during the summer Im guessing ,
Or are you asking about a new recruitment drive ? If so , there is no news about a new recruitment drive yet

So is the 18 month backlog for recruits who are waiting to be called to start their training? Or does it mean the current trainees and probationers won’t be finished their training for 18 months and then they’ll take on more recruits?

It seems reasonable to infer that all outstanding training is epxected to take 18 months, that is likely a combination of those with partial training to complete, as well as those who would have been taken in as part of intakes which were pushed back.

From a new campaign perspective, these take the bones of a year or more before they produce new trainees waiting foir dates, so its likely we will see a new campaign as soon as the staff can be satisfied applicants will be able to complete the process relatively unhindered by the pandemic, when that will be, nobody can know it seems.

So you’re saying people who are waiting to be called will have to wait 18 months until current trainees are finished?

No, merely that depending on where you sit in that 'queue' so to speak, that you may be waiting upwards of 18 months before you see the gates.

The queue should contain both those current trainees not yet completed, and some groups who would have been called by now were the college not closed.

Some will be there a lot sooner, some that long or more.

PS: This is all my own interpretation of the scant information we have, I have no direct insight from inside AGS.

Id imagine if will be blended. Online and in service training in a station.

  • Registered Users Posts: 207 ✭✭AD07

Yeah I think the blended could be good. Wonder would we just have one phase then if it’s blended

Thanks for posting this but hopefully this isn't true. If the first intake of 2021 takes place in September, it might be hard to get 450 people as per the 2021 target.

If the college is reopening this month, hopefully we hear some actvity on an intake by June. They surely have enough people with every stage finished that can go in right away. I am also hoping medicals and fitness tests will kick off in the next month or two and a second intake is being lined up for end of Summer.

Maybe I am being very hopeful :)

I completed my medical and fitness in spring 2019 so I assume they are out of date? And in that case if there won't be an intake until June at the earliest I assume most of the 500 or so applicants who are waiting will have to redo them as well unless they were lucky and done them during 2020.

  • Registered Users Posts: 114 ✭✭banjoh_10

I have my medical completed since March 2020

I've to repeat medical as I was over on BMI, got contacted in December and was given an appointment for it the week after, unfortunately I couldn't attend but was told that they will be starting as soon as restrictions allow them to!

I'd imagine so, I was told it was initially going to be early January, pending restrictions. Obviously we got the harshest we could have gotten so i'm preparing for April anyways!

I have to ask. What order merit wer you? Did you ever hear your vetting was complete?I'm 2020 completion with saying vetting complete.

OOM 63 after interview. To be honest the OOM means absolutely nothing once you get to this stage. Just determines what order you're called for your interview, medical, and physical. In situations where there are more people signed off to begin training than there are places on the intake it will also be used.

The only thing that really seems to matter is when your vetting comes back and that really does seem to just be a lucky dip.

Any ideas whether medicals, fitness tests will take place before the next intake?

Also, surely vetting is complete for everyone now considering the 1 year hold up.

My guess is the next few 'intakes' are going to be made up of those with partial training outstanding from being sent out during the crisis.

In the time those are being finished up, I imagine the intention is to kick off fitness / medicals to be completed in order of those waiting on those stages.

    PQ's - Written Answers - Department of Justice and Equality - 04/03/2021
    172. To ask the Tánaiste and Minister for Justice and Equality the projected Garda recruitment in 2021; and the impact of Covid-19 on same. [12284/21]
The Deputy will be aware that the Garda Commissioner is responsible, by law, for the management and administration of An Garda Síochána, including recruitment and human resources matters, and I, as Minister, have no direct role in the matter.

As the Deputy will appreciate, recruitment to An Garda Síochána is governed by the Garda Síochána (Admissions and Appointments) Regulations 2013. The Public Appointments Service (PAS) manages the initial recruitment stages for selection of Garda Trainees. The final stages of the recruitment process in which candidates are vetted, complete a physical competency test and a medical examination, are managed by the Commissioner.

Budget 2021 provided for the recruitment of up to 650 Gardaí this year, in addition to 500 Garda staff. The Justice Plan 2021, which I recently published, also commits to further redeployment of Gardaí to front line policing work, with a target of 400 redeployments to achieved in 2021.

In relation to Garda recruits, the Deputy will appreciate that these numbers have been affected by the COVID-19 restrictions and the subsequent impact in relation to education and accommodation facilities at the Garda College.

I am advised by the Garda authorities that it is currently anticipated that An Garda Síochána will be in a position to take in 450 new Trainees over the course of 2021, however these plans will be kept under review in light of the situation which may be in place with regard to COVID-19 restrictions.

I am informed that the schedule for these currently anticipated intakes is as follows:

    24 May 2021 - 150
    19 July 2021 - 75
    20 September 2021 - 150
    15 November 2021 - 75

    Total - 450

The Deputy may wish to further note that intake 203, who have been on placement in training station in recent months, are due to return to the Garda College on 22 March 2021.
