Lad on Claire bynre explained what social distancing would be like. Non essential workers/services and everyone would have to stay in all week except for twice a week they might be allowed out to get some supplies from a shop or something. He's not sure we are ready or capable of social distancing lockdown.

Yes, I would be. I was naturally doing that since January. The weather was so muck and I love my hobby too.

Can someone explain to me how the measures will work, is it only to slow down the virus? I understand our health care system will
Cope better if it’s all spread out, and more people will survive, but are we still looking at the same number of cases just over a longer time period?

Yes, maybe. The focus is on slowing down the spread for reasons you understand.

That is more important than the overall number who get infected eventually, it means less deaths.

How many will eventually get the virus over the next year or two is still unknown

Sounds like tipping point is when we see community spread. We will then face a huge lock down it seems, time to stock up is now.

    Cos he's better. At everything.

In fairness to Harris, he has Crohn's disease, which makes him highly vulnerable. I know this from my brother in law and the advice he has received.

A report trying to predict the progression of the virus in Europe and when it will max out healthcare systems: https://www.macrovoices.com/guest-content/list-guest-publications/3551-a-real-macroeconomic-plague-march-2020/file

(It is part of an investment newsletter but still relevant to everyone)

The chart on number of beds available for critical care patients might explain why Germany seems to be doing better (and Ireland doesn’t look good on that chart :-/).

Huge Selfie deaths since Smartphones came out, but we don't fear them as much as this virus.

According to my gfs sister, the Department of Social Welfare have sent out their annual sporadic reviews of Disability Allowance and other payments apparently.

    GP visits required

If they had just done this across Europe from the beginning none of the rest would have had to be done (and Italy wouldn't currently have 463 fatalities and rising)

Well it would have spread eventually but much more slowly yes. Still this is like the joke about trees.

The best time to plant a tree was 20years ago and the next best time is today.

At least it is being done today - some countries which have more advanced spreads than us haven’t taken those steps yet.

They’re doing the right things, sure we might wish it was done sooner, but let’s support them and wish them the best. The more done and the earlier done the fewer will die - which should be our overriding priority.

Doc with glasses is very sceptical at the idea the virus could infect 50%+

Blonde lady disagrees with him....I guess we'll know within 1-2 weeks where this is heading

Southern Italy is further away from the initial outbreak in the Lombardy region than northern Italy.

True, hasn’t really moved south, fairly reassuring no?

Even though it moved so quick and so far from China and then it didn’t move too much from northern Italy.

You don't need to be an expert to understand we are importing cases from northern Italy.

Why is the virus only really badly affecting northern Italy as opposed to southern italy?

Northern Italy is the posh part with links to China and the rest of the world.

Junior Cert geography taught me that the southern part of Italy (the Mezzogiorno ) is the equivalent to Donegal.

I know a couple of people working in healthcare (different hospitals). They said that all suspected flu cases are also treated as suspected coronavirus until proven otherwise. So if you turn up with flu symptoms, you’re isolated and tested anyway.

    About time if so.

This definitely was not done with the first case in Cork, and may have caused a lot of damage because of this oversight.

She keeps referring to Italy. Someone should correct her that it’s really only northern Italy. It’s an important distinction.

Are you looking to score political points?

Yeah, that's what I'm doing. FF head office sent me.

Asking why the Minister for Foreign Affairs rather than the Minister for Health is fronting a flagship programme like this is a more than valid question

Nice to get digs in ay.

What are you doing to represent and help the country?

    Sneering behind your phone.

Most phones have cameras both sides now, you could hack into "its" phone and see if there is a sneer
