Oooh Coveney didn't like the talk of quarantining to China's standards there! But at least he said the government won't shy away from extreme measures if necessary.

Why is the virus only really badly affecting northern Italy as opposed to southern italy?

No elderly or vulnerable relatives? Any friends at all?

    I feel sorry for you.

If they are that worried they should self isolate.

    Use common sense.

    1. Stop flights from certain countries / eventually close all airports.

If they had just done this across Europe from the beginning none of the rest would have had to be done (and Italy wouldn't currently have 463 fatalities and rising)

Sneezing in to your elbow is idiotic, your aim is going to be all over the shop.

No, it should help it not go all over the shop, just on your inner elbow. Important to help shop workers, jokes aside.

    What are the phases
State staged policy to handle the crisis, most countries will run from 1-4 (or 5).

As to be expected, and entirely normal damage control. Most of Europe is only at stage 1 (containment), moving slowly into (delay) phase.

Stage 4 is full on active damage mitigation during peak caseloads, you'll want to save the toilet rolls for that one.

The testing is still predominantly dependent on people coming forward to be tested, and then they are only tested if they are deemed to have been at risk of coming into contact with the virus.

I know a couple of people working in healthcare (different hospitals). They said that all suspected flu cases are also treated as suspected coronavirus until proven otherwise. So if you turn up with flu symptoms, you’re isolated and tested anyway.

Can someone explain to me how the measures will work, is it only to slow down the virus? I understand our health care system will
Cope better if it’s all spread out, and more people will survive, but are we still looking at the same number of cases just over a longer time period?

Yes because you can only get Corona from bottles.

It's where it started, rumoured to be from illegal Chinese migrants working in textile industry so hidden initially by crooked business people.

Coveney looks like he is in shock on Claire Byrne. It looks like the government got a serious wake up call at the briefing today.

The moves today are really encouraging. They will save lives and it looks like it has shaken a lot of people out of their overconfidence.

I’m so glad efforts have ramped up. This will slow the spread and save lives compared to the previous efforts.

    Next steps:
    1. Stop flights from certain countries / eventually close all airports.
    2. Delay the Leaving Cert and college exams until later in summer.
    3. Build capacity and ruthlessly prioritise medical resources.
    4. Look at closing restaurants, pubs, churches, schools etc and just hunker down.

It’ll take some time for it to get to the levels where those things happen but they are likely to end up happening.

Overall though so glad that they have reacted to the briefing.

A lot of time has been lost though

Iguess they are quite socially and economically distinct areas, almost like two separate countries. Maybe thats why it didnt spread as fast as one would expect. I think it is believed to began in Milan because the fashion week was attended by many Chinese travellers

Southern Italy is further away from the initial outbreak in the Lombardy region than northern Italy.

Well lads being able to marshal a shutdown like that in China is a non starter.

Our total Police, Police Reserve, Defence Forces, Reserve DF and Civil Defence is 30,000 bodies, assuming they're all fit and well. So unless they're going to give baseball bats to the park rangers and the driving testers I don't see the Irish having the inherent discipline for a national quarantine.

All northern parts/north sides are more aggressive and the spread of viruses is no exception

Large concentration of cities too, Milan, Florence, Venice, Bologna, Turin, lots of airports, lots of tourism this time of year for skiing?
