So from 21 to 1.9m in 3 weeks?! Sigh, that is 50% of the expected cases, not 50% of the population! The model is incomplete as the HSE have pointed out.

It was the most stupid headline of all. The HSE handled it badly initially.

Another fact people seem to forget is that nobody has died in Ireland from Covid19 as yet. Lest we forget.

Close them, all pitches, playgrounds and parks were closed when the first case of foot and mouth arrived in NI. Why wait for the inevitable? Ireland is going to be no diferrent from Italy.

I know that this will sound like a sweeping statement but culturally, Italians have an issue with organisation compared to Germany for example, and look at how Germany have handled the outbreak so far.

Interesting suggestion for the US , that there should be an Executive Order to allow doctors to tele-med across State lines, at the moment doctors aren’t allowed to practice across State lines unless they have gone to the bother of registering . Seems like a no brainer

Problem is if you cancel parades, then you have to close everything. If an outdoor parade is "unsafe", then how can a cinema, arena, football stadium, church, bus or anything be safe?

Point made on RTE ref parades it's not just the people watching, it's the people taking part in the parade. By removing that it means those people don't have to be with 100's of others if they don't want to be. I know employees of cinemas etc don't have a choice but lot less people in large gatherings to spread nasties.

Thanks, don't have a chance to read it in detail yet but I wonder why it spread in Italy so much and not in the patients home country?
maybe something to do with 10s of thousands of Chinese working in the Italian fashion and shoe manufacturing industry

But yea, blame one person in a country 100s of km away instead because they are trackable, and unregistered workers aren't.

EDIT: even more interesting, there's hardly ever any registered deaths of Chinese in those areas in Italy, seemingly the mafia burys them on the sly and sells their passport on for a profit, so if there was underground cases of deaths of Chinese in Italy in the early stages of the spread, it wouldnt be officially tracked - from an article from 2018 :

You are right, we’re probably about 7/10 days behind them.

    :(

    Not too far off anyway...

You don't have an argument, you have an agenda to talk this down before the great unwashed rise up and overturn their masters or some such tripe like that, you are either a shill, a troll or deluded!

I have my mother-in-law and sister-in-law leaving Northern Italy on Wednesday, one to Spain, one to Dublin. Local authortiy has informed both that since they already had flights booked, and flights are not cancelled, they are permitted to leave. This is their 'special' outlier cases.
People are allowed to leave if they declare a reason of "Force majeure".
I am assuming that the two ladies have made such declaration, in order to repatriate back home to Ireland.
    Repatriation = "Force majeure"
    They should quarantine on arrival.

Lads, this Italy 'quarantine' is a bit of a joke.

I've been asking for the mother-in-law not to come, but its a bit more complicated than 'dont come'. And so if she does, I dont want her near my pregnant wife or my toddler for a few days so I know everything is clear.

Am I being unreasonable, or is this whole situation utterly insane to be occuring the first place?

You are not being unreasonable, your mother in law is. If she'd any sense she'd stay put and not put others at risk, particularly are there is no screening here for the virus unless and until you show symptoms by which stage the damage is done and she may already have spread it.

But of course she is going to come. Remain in lockdown in a red zone or take the next available flight out? I think we all know what she and countless others will do.

Been really worried about my parents in this, both turned 70 last year and have underlying heart conditions, ashmtha etc. But they're totally fine day to day and don't have to be in and out of hospital unlike some poor folks - just blood tests for medication really. Anyway I've been concerned about passing something onto them from my work but today was out with mum in town when she said "Oh I must pop in and ask my hairdresser about something" I joked "Is your hairdresser Italian?" She said "Yes why?" ...........................

Yes, and company has informed me now to self-isolate for 2 weeks if she comes.

The virus is growing out of control in Germany. Lots of people here not taking it seriously. I am sure we will have a lockdown here within a week or two. We will be the same as Italy.

Stock market would close down for the day when the decline got to 20 percent.

Seven percent drop in just the opening hour is a crash level decline. Since the index jumping up from 23,000 to 24,000 in the last half hour. The FED likely pumping money in to stop a crash? Long day yet to see if they can stop it?

BBC. Woman from Singapore talks about being diagnosed with Covid-19 .

    TAKE NOTE OF HER SYMPTOMS

Feb 3rd she has a fever, 38.2/38.5. She takes 2 panadol, feels tired and sleeps the whole day.

For the rest of the week, she feels fine. No symptoms ‘Not even a sniffle or a cough’.

February 7, at 3am she wakes up and the room is spinning – next day she is confirmed to have Covid-19.

    Video :

Seems like the "incubation period" is what makes this more difficult to contain.

And cinemas, restaurants, concerts, schools, offices, buses, trains......how can they possibly be safe if an outdoor parade is deemed "unsafe"?

It's not just "safe" or "unsafe". There is different levels.

To give you an example, last year during the parade I went to get a couple of coffees, took me 50 minutes the place was so overwhelmed with people, barely elbow room.

TBH this isn't that hard understand, if a virus is about to become rampant through the community you if you can stop the congregation of large groups of people.

    What exactly is confusing you?

And Bologna wasn't Bologna until two weeks ago. And Wuhan wasn't Wuhan until three months ago. Have people never heard of prevention better than cure? Clearly not.

Cases per capita would make an awful lot more sense than “X country has more than 1000 cases”.

Fairly meaningless stats when people are comparing Iceland and China, as I saw on a US news channel. Reykjavik would register as a village on Chinese scale.

You are right, we’re probably about 7/10 days behind them.

Well we'll know in 7 days then. If there are hundreds of deaths per day in each of Germany, France and the UK, we'll know the Bologna situation is not an aberration.

If it's not happening, that changes the dynamic completely.

Does she have a key to the house if so might want to get a latch and chain put on if you think she is one of those that would just walk in even if she has been told to stay away.

The stock exchange crash today is not just because of coronavirus. The Saudis have upped production of oil reducing the price to spite the Russians. Coronavirus not helping I’d imagine.

Everyone can have their own take on the reasons. Mine is that debt levels are high and much of that debt will soon be irrecoverable. Debt sparked the 2007/9 GFC. History repeating, if you ask me.

We have no way of knowing about Germany, because they are not publishing the number of tests carried out.
(for Italy we know: tests; positives; hospitalised; in intensive care; age profile of victims; comorbidities of victims)

Would she be willing to self-isolate? Where is she intending to stay?
