The point down the line for this incident between Small and McLaughlin is that Small was running towards McLaughlin from 4 or 5 yards out.

He could clearly see that McLaughlin was in a "hospital pass" situation where he had to concentrate on receiving a pass from the side (and behind even) so was totally unsighted.

To say Small would not have been aware of this is naïve.

He in fact went out to capitalise on the fact instead of any "player welfare" / pulling out or altering his actions.

Something should be done here as it's a dangerous situation as the outcome shows.

Any truth to these whatspp messages going around about Dessie Farrell not having the support of the players and about the Cluxton withdrawal / Covid training incident?

Ah jesus. Have you seen the messages? Sent from "Dublin Mick". A line at the end, "The Smalls started laughing at Cluxton and Dessie wouldn't back him". C'mon like. About as much truth in it as me starting for Kerry the next day.

I saw someone sum it up perfectly. The Dublin WhatsApp of 2021 is like the Kerry one from 2020 when there was apparently a heave against Peter Keane. Lads are just bored and unfortunately because social media is a cesspit, these things take off.

Lads, I see the draw for the Dublin championship was made. Had my eye on Ballymun v Thomas Davits as a game i was going to go to. What will the ticket situation be for Parnell Park? Handy enough to get one ye reckon?

  • Registered Users Posts: 18,312 ✭✭✭✭gormdubhgorm

I would like to know that myself I typed in 'Dublin championship tickets' and it was a link from 2017 that appeared first. Plus I have no idea what the covid rules are now re the GAA it seems notional at best.

You would think it is about time they could let people back in and let Parnell be a 'pilot'. They probably would not get a full house anyway about 4k -6k ish if they opened the doors with no restrictions?

It kind of annoyed me that over in the UK they have full stadiums heaving with crowds. Aren't we supposed to ahead of them in vaccinations? I can't make head nor tail of it at this stage. Plus most of them crowds in the UK seemed to have no masks either! Similar to Croke Park where it was not really enforced.

Guff about stuff, and stuff about guff.

All I could see was the fixtures. While I'm at it. Where is handy to park the car for Parnell Park? Is there parking on site? I've never been.

There normally is a load of paid parking in the school beside it. But when it is jammed I always find it a right pain in the neck to get out of (I remember once Shane Ryan getting out of the carpark before me and he was after playing in the game!).

So to be honest I got into habit of parking on a little roundabout in an an estate on Clanmoyle road. I get in early to get a nice spot. Loads do the same. Much easier to get out of when the match is over.

In the busy games there is sometimes a guard at the top asking 'are you local?' etc. More for show than anything.

Guff about stuff, and stuff about guff.

You could park in the Thorndale estate off the Malahide road and walk down.

It's a 15 minute walk from killester dart, and there's a few busses that go within a couple mins walk

The area is already shite enough with traffic

  • Registered Users Posts: 6,461 ✭✭✭dobman88

Coming from Ashbourne so its car only unfortunately.

Seems I've a few recommendations there anwyay so ty lads

When in parnell Park I generally park up towards kitty kiernans sometimes a bit of a walk but usually get away OK the crowds won't be huge for most matches .

Loads of good parking spots around. The handiest is in Casino estate on the way into Vinnie's. It's only a couple of minutes walk from there and handy getting out.

You could also try Collins Park as well but it can be a pain getting out of.

St David's isn't bad either but a little further away, maybe 10 minute walk.

You have to ask what certain players lose by bulking up. Is it the yard of space that makes them catch the eye? Archer is naturally very skillful, quick, a good ball winner and very accurate from play. Would extra bulk take that away from him is my concern. Conditioning and toning is fine to a point. Saw Archer playing a few club games and he was excellent. Dublin AFL 1 is as tough as it gets and he was well able to hold his own with some "tough" defenders.

Jack McCaffrey would not bulk up from 80kg to 84kg as it would have taken away from his game which was based on speed and picking up breaking ball. He felt carrying around the extra 4kg would impact his game.

I like Aaron Byrne from Na Fianna. he is pacy but got little game time. McHugh has been knocking on the door but seems to drift out of games but an excellent player ok and maybe a prolonged run in national league would be good for him.

  • Registered Users Posts: 4,254 ✭✭✭LeoB

Yes agree. Think it is maybe more toning than bulking we need. Goouch Cooper is an example and a few current Kerry players are the same. Tyrone with Brian Dooher, Brian McGuigan, Donegal with the McHughs..... Give me a lad with any skill any day. Apart from the fact they are better to watch a well coached team will give them an advantage in games.

  • Registered Users Posts: 12,777 ✭✭✭✭JRant

Oh yeah, without a doubt. One thing to remember is some players need it and some don't. Not everyone weighing 80kg is as skillful or fast as McFlash. It really needs to be tailored to the players needs, something which is definitely happening more and more now thankfully.

Was Archer on extended panel early in year? I was one that questioned his physicality and work rate at inter county. He only 21 so plenty of time for him to make name for himself. He is very good on the frees.

Don't think Aaron Byrne, McHugh and Ryan Basquel are up to it. McHugh and Basquels are good players. Byrne hasn't pushed on from his promise at u21.

Would agree hard to put Rock and Costello in one team though would disagree on Dean Rock contribution from play. Has really stood up since 2016 in big games. He must have scored 1-16 from play in the 6 a row AI finals. His off the ball running and coming onto ball on the loop is top class.

There is paid parking in the church grounds to. With number restrictions there should be no problem getting into one of them or parking in one of the nearby estates.

  • Registered Users Posts: 6,461 ✭✭✭dobman88

Would you believe I just came here to say I'll probably park at the church. Easy in easy out and just around the corner to the pitch.

Missus from Donnycarney and grew up on Collins Ave across from Parnell park so probably should have asked her first but it didnt even dawn on me that of course she would know.

Sound for all the suggestions here anyway lads, appreciated.

Presume McManamon and P McMahon gone now (Cluxton already gone) , I guess J McCarthy and Rock have a bit left yet, maybe Cooper too, what about Fitzsimmons I wonder..?

You do but at the same time it makes our defeat all the more frustrating.

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,984 ✭✭✭rolling boh

think it is a good result for us will keep it a bit more open winners this year will hardly dominate where Kerry may have but we need to improve on the pitch and especially the sideline .

  • Registered Users Posts: 18,312 ✭✭✭✭gormdubhgorm

Ah if we won it would have been robbery on Mayo. Playing so bitty would have likely lost the final anyway. Kerry got badly caught I think. Assumed Tyrone posed no threat idk?

All that weak Munster new narrative is a poor excuse it's flag bearer - is Pat Spillane. Dublin never used to let a weak Leinster bother them, he did not think of that!

For me now it is set up for Mayo to dominate (if they can win that breakthrough Sam) and then then it lifts the pressure on them. IMO they have the best overall squad out of the main contenders for Sam in the next few years now. Up to Dublin to try and get back to the near the same level as quick as possible.

Guff about stuff, and stuff about guff.

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,873 ✭✭✭Sultan of Bling

Fair points and I have no arguments over mayo''s deserved victory. They were the team who could and probably should have beaten us in the 15 & 16 drawn games in particular.

Just frustrating in how we were in a winning position and we uncharacteristically let it slip in the 2nd half and our record of comfortable championship victories in recent years over Tyrone.

Anyway I'm going into coulda woulda shoulda mode.

I probably just need to let it go.

  • Registered Users Posts: 12,777 ✭✭✭✭JRant

Our defeat was coming since the season started in fairness. The final should be one for the purest with plenty of the pulling and the dragging going on but I wouldn't begrudge either team a win.

Yeah I suppose it was tbf.

Although after today's game I actually feel a bit better about Dublin.

I still think our 1st 15 as a group is the best in the country.

Hopefully our bench can be strenghted after all the recent retirements.

  • Registered Users Posts: 12,777 ✭✭✭✭JRant

This team have another AI in them. It depends on how the management team work over the next couple of months to start bringing the team ethos back together.

Take Clifford and O Shea out of Kerry and they are very average. Dublin have better forwards. If they get their team act together again they are well capable of going the distance with Kerry. How good will Tyrone become and if Mayo win one the shackles might come off. Interesting times ahead.

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,873 ✭✭✭Sultan of Bling

It does look like a more open football championship is on the horizon, whereas the hurling could be set for a period of dominance from 1 team, the way things are going.

While disappointed with Dublin's defeat, I can deal with it a lot more knowing that Kerry won't win this year - shocked at how poor they were yesterday, at one point they had 17 points on the board and O'Shea and Clifford had socred 15 of them! I always felt Kerry were overhyped and the game against Dublin in Thurles has been conveniently erased from memory by most pundits when they said 'Kerry had swotted everyone aside' this year.

I agree with the comments that the football championship will be quite open next year, Mayo and Tyrone and good teams but they're no world beaters, Mayo needed extra time to beat Dublin who were playing well below their best. If Dublin can freshen up the panel and team a bit by finding 3-4 players they'll be there or thereabouts next year.
