Just saw this on Instagram. Very good cast, and from the same production company as Line of Duty and Bodyguard.

The mysterious disappearance of a Scottish fishing trawler and a death on-board a Trident nuclear submarine bring the police into conflict with the Navy and British security services. DCI Amy Silva (Suranne Jones) leads an investigation on land and at sea into a conspiracy that threatens the very heart of Britain’s nuclear deterrent.

Basics (I've no idea how to do spoiler text on new site)...

A small trawlers nets are entangled in a submarine and it's brought to the bottom with its crew. While the trawler is being sunk an officer (Burke) on the sub Vigil can hear on sonar the trawlers nets being entangled with a sub and it sinking. He wants Vigi to surface to see if there's any survivors from the trawler, Burke has either experience or knew of a similar sinking previously. The Captain of Vigil doesn't want to surface as he knows this would expose Vigil's position, it's only really later in the episode that the reason for not surfacing is that it's an enemy sub that would have been entangled in the nets and this would then expose Vigil's position. Burke is dismissed from duty and is found dead later which then triggers an investigation in to his death which is why detective Amy Silva is transported to the sub to investigate the circumstances around it.

Suranne Jones is in bloomin' everything - she's good but she's no Maxine Peake or Sarah Lancashire.

LOVE Patterson Joseph and Stephen Dillane. They're two actors who deserve more recognition imo.

I've enjoyed it so far. Very good at capturing the claustrophobic atmosphere on the submarine. Interesting to see Shaun Evans play a character who is 'helping' the police but really keeping watch to make sure DCI Silva doesn't find out too much. The shoe is normally on the other foot when he's playing Morse.

    I thought it was super.

    Really tense, locked-box mystery.

Side point: was Rose Leslie pregnant when they filmed? Giant coats that don't fit her...

First episode quite good, I heard nothing about this series until I saw it mentioned here 😉

Rose Leslie has come a long, long way since downton Abbey

Why do I have a feeling Adrian Dunbar is going to pop up some time 🤔

Really strong episode one I thought.

One criticism I did find some little bits of CGI a bit dodgy though....

It's been a while since I've been on a nuclear sub 🙄 but this one doesn't have a feel or look of one 😏

Ha ha I was thinking more of the boat at the start....and the scenes of the sub surfacing etc...but alright lol

Not bad, I'm liking this actually, just hope James Nesbitt doesn't make a cameo 😁

It’s no Das Boot. That series was so realistic, the sub in this is like a hotel. I think she bumped her head once and had a tiny bunk and that was the height of her discomfort.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 27,051 ✭✭✭✭Dempo1

It is a little strange a better effort not made re the interior of a sub, it does have a look of a hotel to it (Travel lodge) 😂

@cozar yep this ain't Das Boot for sure.

I enjoyed Ep1, but Ep2 has left me a bit middle of the road now. I'll stick with it for now - we'll see.

    Bits I'm not sure about:

    • wtf with the tanker
    • the two cliff hangers conveniently resolve and without adding anything further.
    • The Colombo moment where now its the 1st Officer, the guy who was supposed to be running interference is now her best mate as is the Captain.
    • And now a new hare running with the girl from the camp drowning maybe.

Just started. Martin Compston pissing off his superiors in the opening scenes of the very first episode - where have I seen that before...? 🤔

This looks good. The submarine is a great setting for drama. Red October, Crimson Tide and Das Boot are all dudes, which is cool - no issue with it, but as a woman I'm interested to see a submarine drama with female involvement.

Amy being lowered down from the helicopter like Jack Ryan - fecking great. Love this.

Have you missed the Sub Doctor who is female, numerous crew members, Main characters, including the lieutenant commander at the base 🤔 seems like a good female representation all round IMO.

Enjoyed the first two episodes. Jones is great.

Anything submarine focussed floats my boat - Love Das Boot too, first two seasons were excellent.

Is the angry looking guy in the camp too obvious as a suspect?

    😇😁

He may be in the frame alright and more likely be working against the cause rather than for it.

Is Glover now a suspect? He seems way too helpful. Though now that he knows Silva's weaknesses, he's in a better position to try and control what happens to her and her investigation.

Great show with great acting. Plenty of twists ahead I imagine. Great setting on a submarine, bad cgi aside.

I’ve enjoyed it too, possibly more than I thought. Hopefully it doesn’t go off reservation ridiculous like the bodyguard, which didn’t start too badly but became a bit of a mess. I l8ke the tension between the Police and the Navy and the tug of war between their differing priorities. My guess is that there will be some scandal discovered by the cops, but the Navy will pull rank politically and it’ll be covered up ultimately (at least that’s the way I’d write it 😎

For those questioning the look of the interior of the submarine Channel 5 has a new series called "Submarine: Life Under the Waves" starting on Monday 13th September.

Submarine: Life Under the Sea follows the crew of nuclear-powered HMS Trenchant as they set sail on 120 days of tense and dangerous underwater operations. For the first time ever, the top-secret world of the hunter-killer submarine will be revealed as we explore how the crew of 100 men survive underwater for so long in cramped and confined spaces. At depths of over 400m in the North Atlantic, HMS Trenchant must deal with engine fires, poisonous air and food shortages as they’re tasked with defending the British Trident nuclear deterrent from Russian nuclear submarines, and gathering secret intelligence off the coastline of Russia.

I'm trying to work out if it was filmed on a sub, or did the recreate a sub, or filmed in some industrial setting, disused factory or power plant maybe?

Wait for the Range Rover with blacked out windows to show up - that's the giveaway that the show has entered the realm of Bodyguard/Line of Duty nonsense.

I'll forgive a blacked out range rover but never, ever, ever if James Nesbitt turns up 😊, I'm still traumatised from wasting 4 hours of my life watching the worst pile of Gik ever produced or broadcast "Bloodlands"

I just watched the second episode and my thoughts are that it's going down the route of a MI5/MOD cleaning house operation.

    • Craig Burke was poisoned and the body wasn't returned as requested by the police.
    • Prentice had been assigned to Vigil to keep things under wraps, he knew about the security threat posed by Burke's girlfriend so did his superiors.
    • The Lt. Commander attempted to have Kirsten detained after searching Burke's quarters at the base.
    • Silva's house was broken into by balaclava men - Kirsten must have been under surveillance.
    • Jade was spotted meeting with Kirsten by an older guy who didn't look anything like a crusty conspiracy Santa type.
    • She was murdered when going to meet a man who was supposedly going to tell her everything.

It's a decent drama so far. I think the most interesting aspect will be Amy Silva's back story.

I've seen enough of submarine movies/series to know that if there was a murder then the murderer is in the galley! Glover is too obvious as a 'twist'. The Trident submarines were introduced around 30 years ago so it could just be a case of the boat showing signs of age. Burke was exposed to something due to negligence. The petty officer not detecting the tanker and the nuclear reactor shutdown are other possible indicators that the onboard systems are not up to scratch. There have been a few things mentioned in dialogue that suggest that Vigil has experienced more than its fair share of issues in the past.

Sub showing signs of age🤔 looks more like a pretty dreadful attempt to make a set look like a submarine, it's shockingly bad and even more obvious in tonight's episode, it looks like a non discript basement.

It looks like the Range Rover is no longer the only vehicile of choice for the suspicious types in these series. When the MI5 people left the police office they drove a Range Rover. Kirsten was tailed by them in a BMW, that has to be explained.

I hope it picks up because the third episode was disappointing. As a whodunnit story it's no longer that interesting, they revealed too much.

Silva's back story is resolved so if every message received from Kirsten is to be a hook for another flashback it's really poor.

I'm also disappointed that my suspicion about the age of the submarine being a factor in the story line was correct. I got a chuckle out of the revelation that it was a USS Los Angeles class submarine that was responsible for the sinking of the trawler. I used to play The Hunt For Red October and 688 Attack Sub video games as a teenager so I know that the Los Angeles class submarine pre-dates Trident. It's a 'noisy' boat so if Vigil couldn't detect it then their equipment is definitely fecked. It would have been more realistic if they had said it was a Gotland class submarine because those are almost undetectable, but I guess then they would have to factor the Swedes into the story line.
