You could take it as that....or you could take it as someone talking well about their area of interest. Could very well be pure spoof, but when someone has a clear interest in their topic, it comes across well.

...but I get what ya mean.

Leo doing lots of talking & saying nothing…Brendan left him off there with the ‘kiss’ question…it’s in the book..🙄

Nice interview with Manchán Magan today. Wish it had been longer tbh. He even managed to slip an f-bomb in there. BOC didn't pull him up on it, presumably as MM hasn't long left on this earth.

    I'm a Rock n Roll Amputation

It's sad, MM is only 55.

He's still making plans even though his situation is dire.

I hope he gets to see some of them through to fruition.

I hadn't realised he was unwell. Poor man.

I have always liked MM. I have always thought of him as a parrell to Tubs. Same sort of family background, similar education. One has a very clear style and is a very good broadcaster who has been able to follow his intrests. Then you have Tubs, who wants to project the twee book nerd. Which MM is.

If you ever read MM earlier book about his travels in South America, he claims to have hooked up with a Hollywood starlet. He has never named her. But the clues in the book hint at Cameron Diaz or Winnona Ryder.

Interesting you say that. I was in Listowel one time for a family get together, and it was during Listowel Writer's week. This is a good bit ago now, before Covid.

And I spotted Manchán, who walked right past me. Not arrogantly, place was packed with people, we were all shuffling past each other. He was wearing a suit, in a cream or creamy beige jacket. And dark trousers, I think (I remember the jacket). And I said it to my brother, 'that guy looks familiar' and my brother pointed out who he was. Googling, I found he was in Listowel in 2012, but this was a year later, I think. He came back, afterwards, I imagine. He used to visit Kerry often, according to my research, he has relatives in Kerry.

And it was interesting how he didn't want any 'attention' or spotlight on him. He blended in like a local. Tubridy was in Listowel in 2017, but he wanted attention. The spotlight was on him, as the artist PJ Lynch painted a portrait of him. (I think this was during his book on JFK).

Magan gave a 3-day class on writing too. I know he was paid for it, but it showed he is a genuine book lover. A genuine passion for writing. For passing on knowledge.

Really very sorry to hear of his terminal diagnosis. Apparently it's throughout his body. And when it's in the bones, as his is, then he hasn't a lot of time. His photo is on the RTE website that was taking during the interview. He looks very different, very frail.

So sorry to hear this awful news. I love his programmes. I haven't listened to his interview on BOC but will do today. I'll be following him more closely now, as I'm on a similar "journey" (I hate that phrase) with bile duct cancer, which, hopefully is not as dire as Manchan's.

Didn't know he was so ill either.
I really enjoyed all his contributions and his own shows.

    Best wishes Manchán.

I saw Manchan only 6 weeks ago at the Sneem Festival in Kerry. He was giving a couple of talks, 2 days in a row. He was excellent, full of life, full of energy. I only found out then, from someone I was talking to that he had terminal cancer. To look at him you would never have known. He doesn't even look 55.

I was very sad to hear him with Brendan yesterday and to hear he's in hospital. I hope its only a temporary setback and he gets home soon and has time to do all the things he wants to do.

Funny yesterday I was feeling a bit down, a few things I had lined up to do cancelled due to weather here in Kerry etc. After listening to Manchan it gave me the kick up the ass I needed to stop moping. Best wishes to Manchan and for reminding us of the beauty and spirituality of nature which is all around us.

Brendan trying to cover his ass eleven minutes into the show 🙄.

American toxic rubbish leading the Irish news agenda yet again over all other Irish stories.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,818 ✭✭✭RabbleRouser2k

I'd say the folks who've completely left down the most vulnerable in Irish society must be grateful for the American stuff going on, because it's taken the spotlight off of what's happening over here.

Oh, and Leo has a book out. Wouldn't even be worth shredding it for compost, imho.

I have stopped listening to the show but will definitely listen back to Manchan Magan's interview. I knew he had cancer but didn't realise he had received a terminal diagnosis. I always enjoy his programmes and he seems like a really genuine and nice fella. I'm very sorry to hear his bad news and I hope he gets more time to work on what he has planned and can enjoy time with his family.

To be fair to today's show, they were covering what was in the papers, and then Brenda Power started getting quite angry at 2 other contributors, it was worth leaving it run for a bit...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,602 ✭✭✭Bellbottoms

Really? I can't stand Power. What had her getting so angry with the other contributors?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,108 ✭✭✭mykrodot

She was very good today! Well worth a listen, she's able to hold her own.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,602 ✭✭✭Bellbottoms

I might have a listen. Why was she getting angry with the others?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,108 ✭✭✭mykrodot

various topics, various issues, you really need to just listen to it. Haven't got the time to go through it all here.

    It's a newspaper panel.

    Guess what's in the news.

You have a poor opinion of Irish people if you think they are that easily led that they can't focus on domestic issues as well as keep up with international stories

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,924 ✭✭✭✭dulpit

They were saying that Charlie Kirk held objectionable views. She wasn't happy with people speaking ill of the dead.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,602 ✭✭✭Bellbottoms

Had a bit of a listen, it was a bit weird. She wouldn't take any critisism of Kirk. Also seems to be a bit of a double standard here. She kept bringing up Irish academics polarising people by implying that Kirk deserved to die and mocking his death. Which is something Kirk was more then happy to do. But we can't saying that about Kirk now he is dead. Not when there are anonymous Irish academics we can blame.

It was an infuritaing listen. Does she start crying?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 36,380 ✭✭✭✭NIMAN

Did she name the Irish academics who mocked Kirks death and said he deserved to die?

Very sorry also to hear about Manchán Magan's illness, I always thought him to be a very likeable man.

Have always admired his work, especially his travel stuff. His radio contributions and his TV work on his travels around Europe and further afield are so enjoyable.

The absolute respect and curiousity he had for people and cultures everywhere he went was lovely to see. His train journey throughout Europe was fantastic, kind of like Portillo does but with an Irish twist and he made that genre of documentary his own.

If it is to be that he is soon to pass, he will be very much missed. I am not a fan of RTE and never have been, but Manchán is, and always will be, one of the good ones.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,602 ✭✭✭Bellbottoms

I had to turn it off after a bit. But she didn't name anyone while I was listening.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,602 ✭✭✭Bellbottoms

I had forgotten about the travel show. He did one or two by rail. Which again is another parallel with Tubs. He wanted to do a similar show, but in Oz. 'Cause he has never been.

Heard Manchan on with Matt Cooper a few months ago, he was downplaying his illness then, hope he can make the most of the time he has left.

Is that not a bit of an oxymoron? An Irish person (me) having a poor opinion of the Irish?

I don't have a poor opinion of the 'Irish', I have a poor opinion of the Irish media and media in general.
