There is a lidl, aldi and supervalue where I live, that's all, no other supermarkets.

Supervalue is ridiculously expensive.. I see people with whole trollies full of groceries, I have no idea how they afford them. There are a few items that can't be got in lidl and aldi, but otherwise I would buy pretty much anything I need in there.

I don't buy lidl veg and fruit and will not until they start dating them, the stuff goes off very quickly. But all the meat, cheese, canned and packet goods etc are excellent. I travel to Tesco occasionally to fill the gaps, they are cheaper (!) and better range than SV.

No comparison in prices but they do provide a different shopping experience to be fair.

It's very noticeable the way the staff are trained very differently.

In LIDL and Aldi it's like a human conveyor belt and the etho's seems to be get them out the door as fast as you can and don't have one idle second during your shift. Your job depends on huge turnover because of our small profits.

Supervalu place the priority on customer care, the staff are trained to go out of their way to be customer friendly and patient and try and create a relaxed atmosphere. They seem to target the elderly market and will even bring the shopping out to the car or you can leave it there to be delivered.

Ha! I am the 'elderly market' and I have no wish to stand behind someone while the person on check out slowly slowly puts the items through interspersed with gossip about a mutual friend - and not with an elderly customer particularly. I don't doubt you are right about the target audience, but it does not alter the fact that the bottom line is SV is expensive and L&A are less so.

I dont agree with that. Dunnes is trying very hard to be something that it is not. Expensive muck!

The SuperValu own brand stuff is not bad for some items. I can make a casserole that feeds 6 for about €15.

And it costs about the same as Lidl/Aldi (+/- a few cents) But if far better quality.

It all comes down to what type of shopper you are. Do a big shop once a week and Aldi/Lidl might seem cheaper on paper.

Do stuff daily (Like me) and you can get some bargains as long as you dont have a meal plan and are not stock piling bog roll and cleaning products. My Flatmate has been converted to M&S for the meal deals.

Dear lord I should hope you can! What on earth are you putting in it?

We have an Aldi at the end of the road so shop there mostly.

I'd only go to Supervalue for the following items:

    Pataks Curry Pastes
    Rummo Pasta
    Bean Sprouts
    Bok Choi
    Hakubaku Japanese Ramen Noodles

We were in Supervalue one time and said feck it we'll pick up all we need and were shocked at the cost. Not a scientific analysis however we find Aldi great value and the "substitute" products to be good quality.

First they came for the socialists...

Jaysus that ad was just on. Apparently the fruit and veg quality is great? em no it's not, it's passable, same as every supermarket. If I'm cooking for an occasion I'll get the veg from the veg shop. Same with meat, although most butchers now are just meat display merchants. If I want good eggs I'll hit up my parent's neighbor.

I went into the new Lidl or Aldi in Terenure for a few plant seeds bulbs 2 days after it opened.

The whole building stunk of rotten veg. 2 days after it opened!

I buy loose veg in Supervalu. So if in need 3-4 carrots, 4-5 big potatoes, 1 big onion & 1 big leek that is what I buy. Along with a big pack of Superquinn sausages.

Can be done for €15ish that way. I refuse to buy a big bag of pre-packaged veg when most of it will end up unused on the compost heap.

Just because you can buy a cheap big bag of veg does not mean you should!

Aldi & Lidl aim to have their own brand stuff 10/15% cheaper then own brands from Tesco, SV, Dunne's.

SV value guaranteed range of pricecuts makes that more or less impossible due to cost.

    Competition is great :)

Seriously? Even at Supervalu prices a kilo of carrots €1, pack of leeks under €2, large onion say 50c and a small bag of spuds say €2.50. 2 packs of Cumberland sausages, €4.40 results in a rather boring casserole for a few cents over €10.

This is absolutely not sensible or economical shopping and you still have spuds and carrots left for the next day. Why would you put food on the compost heap? Do you not eat every day?

And you are in fact quoting basics that would be much the same price in any supermarket. Start pricing in stock cubes and herbs, or cheese, jam, yoghurts and most other products and you begin to see the difference.

You'd save a fortune on all of that in an Asian supermarket if you've one anywhere near.
