Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

There was no booing I'm afraid. Sarcastic clapping and cheering by an embarrassing minority of fans directing their frustrations (inappropriately) at management on the day for waiting so long to sub Keatley.

But "booed by his own fans" makes a much better headline. One swallowed and believed by the more naive patrons among us.

Ian Keatley is lying about it so. As is O’Gara. As is Donal Lenihan. As are other players and the media. Fake news in Ireland!

Indeed. That's appropriate naming of it yes.

Watch it back if you dare. I'm ready to admit I'm wrong this very second if anyone can give me a clip of one single individual in the crowd booing as they announce Keatley's substitution.

    It did, not, happen.

    it did happen.
He references it in articles as do others. That they jeered is still horrible. And booing/jeering is the same.

Were you there? I was, no booing only sarcastic applause and cheering from a few idiots that the man was put out of his misery. He was playing terribly and had been for a few weeks. But as Phog said, the booing headline sounds better.

Absolutely have to pull you on this TLS.
Jeering and sarcastic cheering is very much motivated by a "oh thank **** for that", "about bloody time" or "at last" mentality. A relief of sorts.

Booing is much more emotive, often with some vitriol built into it. There's venom in a boo.

There was no venom against Keatley that day, or any other day for that matter.

Hence to claim that he was booed is inaccurate. Simple as that.

Several years later, I'm still waiting to hear an explanation as to how sarcastic cheering is better than booing.

    BTW, Keatley himself heard booing.

Oh, well, glad that's been cleared up for us, and Keatley if he ever reads boards. Jeering is so much better lads, you're spot on there.

I wonder what spin ye can put on the booing of Paul Warwick as he was taking a conversion there? Motivational support?

Edit: I misremembered - it was another Aussie, Dan Parks, not Warwick.

  • Registered Users Posts: 230 ✭✭Marty Xavier

Ok fair enough he may have, I certainly didn't but there were plenty of idiots in the ground that night so can only speak for what i heard.
Great to beat Connacht again though and with a B team as well.

    See my previous post.

    Did Keatley hear booing though?
Where did he say he did?

What noises did and didn't come from the crowd are on video, for all to hear (or not hear).

And it was only a matter of time before this discussion resorted to the "Well it doesn't matter whether they booed or not, Keatley didn't deserve it."

And no one here has disputed that.
    Booing is worse than jeering.
In this instance, it was directed at management not the player.

Jeez the strawmen aren't taking any Christmas holidays anyway.

Lot of dislike of facts around here.

Still willing to admit I'm wrong as soon as someone finds a clip of a boo btw. Just one boo... Anyone?

    Im here all night.

Move on you bluffer. I was in the east terrace and booing in front of us. We were disgusted, and it was more than one or two people

Dan Parks being booed? This sounds like the Ireland game in Croker we lost at the death, rather than a game in Thomond, no?

Nope, it was in Thomond at the end of a Pro12 game. Connacht scored a late try to get close to LBP territory, and Parks was booed as he was kicking the conversion. Very sporting from the "Best Fans in the World" (TM)

Same thing happened at an Ulster Munster match I happened to be at in Thomond in November 2014. Last minute (or possibly time up) try from Ulster with some sort of controversy around it I don’t remember but it was given left Ulster within one point so Ian Humphreys had a conversion to win it and was roundly booed in build up. Remember slagging a couple of Munster friends who were at it with us.

Nothing against Munster (similar has happened in every ground) but this nonsense reputation some of the media and some of their supporters like to build up as being guardians of rugby values or whatever has been shown up to be empty words on many occasions.

Arra go away ye Connacht lads, starting to believe ye're own hype that ye are turning into the All Blacks and our second string go up the road and bate ye. Booooooooo

Fair enough. In any case, I'm almost certain there was an Ireland international where Parks was booed for a last minute penalty win as well, hence the confusion.

Could we not get back to discussing the match tho? Plenty of talking points like Aki's and Dillane's performances and implications for Ireland selection, JOD playing brilliantly again and a very young Munster backline with a very solid outing at a tough ground.

Interestingly, read that it's only Connacht's 3rd loss in Galway in all of 2019.

Delighted with the win, especially with many of our key players rested.

Not quite your second string. And not quite our first string - given Paddy McAllister, Gavin Thornbury, SOB, Fainga’a, Jarrad Butler, Marmion, Tom Farrell, Matt Healy were missing, majority would start and others would be coming off bench. Other squad options injured too.

Certainly don’t think Connacht are the All Blacks either. There was criticism of Connacht crowd, warranted to an extent, all that has been pointed out is Munster supporters doing so could have a nice fall off their high horse.

Thought the Munster kick chase could have been better a few times.

There was at least three times where we put up a contestable kick and a Connacht player caught it with no Munster player near him

Thought Cloete had one of his better games too

And JJ is having a good season at 10

I said it in this thread when the match was actually being discussed that we gifted them a lot of ball especially a 10 minute period in the 2nd half - it hardly mattered though as we were going turn them over or they obliged us themselves.

    Sloppiness cost Connacht the match.

You can't really tell that without actually looking at the carries. If he carries for 1m but it takes 3 defenders to tackle him then that's very effective because he's made space in the defensive line.

Not If the ball is fairly slow and opposition have a chance to reset. He also went backwards a few times giving the defence the chance to get good linespeed or forcing Munster to kick

I think the numbers need padding out. Like what happened from the base of the ruck.

V Leinster a few years ago In Dublin he constantly made 6 7 8 metres but Leinster tactic was to create slow ball. The ball was slow and the next breakdown was back 10 metres because Leinster were set for getting off the line

Teams do this with Stander now. Let him have his few metres but make the ball so slow teams either kick or cede ground if they play through hands.

How many line breaks did Munster have off the back of a Stander carry at the weekend?

Now this is the truth, just like in wider society the noisy minority are heard. It even happens in here one poster will post incessantly about something and before long supporters of the same team as him are all being tarred with the brush.
