Irish women are "working for free" for the rest of the year, according to Dress for Success Dublin (DfSD), the charity behind the #WorkEqual campaign.

According to DfSD, today marks the date which women effectively stop earning, relative to men, because of the gender pay gap.

This is disgraceful! When are the patriarchy going to stop the ridiculous gender stereotyping of women and pay them the same as men!!

Lol that's a mythical anylayesed spectrum of gender proportional bull****...

There they go turning people against each other, the tide's turning and sadly it's forgotten to take these SJW's and victim's out with it....

Absolute bleached whales the lot of em

    Red herrings

How long are they gonna beat this drum before climbing down?

    It’s a myth.

If women worked for 70% of what men do (or whatever they claim) and women are just as capable as men (they are), then why don’t greedy companies who care about nothing but their bottom line not just hire exclusively women?

If the accountants in most companies could slash their wage costs by 30% at a stroke they’d bite your hand off.

Presumably the reason that doesn’t happen is also a patriarchal conspiracy

Women also do more housework - which is UNPAID!
88.7% of women cook and / or do housework every day, compared with just 48% of men.

Tell me Batrathox... how much housework do YOU do??

We as a society need to start valuing women's contributions more. If patriarchal capitalist system is broken then government need to step in and pay a subsidy to women to make up the gap a finally recognize the work they do.

So you're saying that what comes naturally is worthy of an allowance.

Oh my gosh...paid for looking after your own kid's and keeping your pad tidy..

    Oh stop wearing a dress...

I do ALL the housework, I also do about 80% of the cooking and also the maintenance and garden in the home. Herself works hard and long hours (as do i, but I am home earlier)

I also have a mate who does absolutely everything in the house who also works full time while herself lounges and lunches (I would have divorced her).

This BS outlined above is divisive, simple thing, if you do not like the job and feel you are being treated differently to a man in the same job, take action... don’t just make stupid claims...

I’m not talking about housework I’m talking about in employment - they act is if if a man and woman are doing the same job the woman will be paid 30% less. Which is illegal. It’s simply untrue.

Nah, they're still earning, just at the same 13% disadvantage as they have been at all year. Silly morketing ploy!

who is meant to be paying them to do housework?

Can we drag any woman in off the street to work for us for free. Will they lift up the rug and hoover or will they work around it. This OP isn't giving enough information on these women that have to work for free until the new year.

And a for free working woman shouldn't just be for Christmas now until the new year.

Take for example, my wife who is on scale (same pay as her male colleagues) who has said she'd not work as a Principal (rather than principle :D ) for any amount of money, when did she stop getting paid this year?

I think they mean by virtue of them being female - open to correction.

I don't think that "comes naturally" was directed at women, more something 99% of us do as part of the general human condition.

First they came for the socialists...

I believe these arguments are not pertinent to the real world. My wife doesn't care if a female colleague of mine is getting less than me due to her being female. All she cares about is how much I get.

would they still get payslips between now and the end of the year?

    prsi, how does that work?

can see it being very tricky for revenue and payroll.

It'd be payment in kind or barter system. They work for free and you have to go to the cinema to watch Last Christmas with them.

Well a dog with a mallet up where the sun don't shine isn't going to live in a **** hole is he.

    House untidy, mouldy.

Go to shop buy cleaning products.

Clean house because your natural instinct tells you it's unclean.

You must have a lovely pad...

What's your version of my comment ?

I live in my own place I keep it tidy and hygienically clean.

It's common sense and logical to clean ones own, bathroom, salon, workbench and facilities...

But getting paid to clean one's own personal space is a bit much

Daft press release from some charity trying to up their profile, not reference this alone but you would know an election is near they are all making a dash for it nonprofit, charities anyone and everyone popping up on news shows asking for more money.

There is an interesting one going on locally one TD who seems to hate the guts of another local TD ( different Parties ) and delighted to get a chance to get a dig in, all to do with an origination making a dash for it threatening closer unless they get more money.

I always thought it was negotiational skills that determined your pay, a company will only pay you what you negotiate. A company will rarely if ever give someone a decent pay rise for the craic. I did work with a girl once who did more than her fair share but would never ask for a rise, however her male colleagues would play hard ball and get the cash. The company did not publish salaries and would not encourage pay rises.

You're being rather sexist here. My parents both worked as teachers. My father did the cooking and housework around the house because he finished earlier than my mother... primarily because she wanted to advance her career by becoming the principal of her school. He also took care of us while she studied full time for both her Masters and PHD while we were young. So, he worked a full time job and also did all the family stuff... *gosh* isn't that what marriage is?

Oh, and my mother made far more than my father, but then she worked more than him, and was more ambitious. I guess there's a message in there somewhere...
how much housework do YOU do??

Staying at home as a housewife, (or househusband) is a choice. She could be working and earning an income... although I should point out that she probably views the husbands earnings as being her wealth too.

I always find it interesting with this kind of situation, since women remain the largest spenders in any consumer society. But they're apparently being paid less... where is all the money the husbands make going?
We as a society need to start valuing women's contributions more. If patriarchal capitalist system is broken then government need to step in and pay a subsidy to women to make up the gap a finally recognize the work they do.

Then end of the last vestiges of equality and competition in society. Yay!

Because most companies who have attempted to do so have failed to stay competitive (unless they have huge funding behind them). Key employees leave too often for personal reasons resulting in a massive turnover of staff over time.

More unsubstantiated BS on this ridiculous topic. Until someone gives me a detailed study on the gender income disparity they can bollox off.

And I mean detailed, really detailed.

There's nothing worse than someone trying to put material or financial value on a man or woman who enjoys being at home and doing domestic chores.

Undermining people's ability to be domestic by, putting a price on it.

    The end is nigh lol

Bring back the horse too while ye are on track...

I work agreed hours a week for an agreed hourly rate. I’m happy with that. So is my boss. Males of the species in the same job get the same hourly rate. It’s been thus since the early 80’s. If I felt that I was worth more, then I’d seek better paid employment.

Why did none point out in these threads that men work on average 7 years longer than women. That has a huge effect on the average salary.

Its a childcare gap. Women who don’t have kids never experience this at all.

This push to say you can be mother of the year and CEO is complete crap and a complete slap in the face to people who dedicate their lives to their careers. This only serves to hurt childless women.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 4,415 ✭✭✭generalgerry

F**k that, since we're all equal, I'm a man but I want equal rights to carrying a child. By not permitting me to carry my own child, the state is discriminating against me.

Typical RTÉ, Rich vs poor, men vs woman.

In tomorrow’s news a special report on how tough life is for the next minority. Followed by how carbon tax will save the world.

Yes, theres already a bit of a bonus to womens pay tp male up for the eventual ‘gap’ in a lot of circumstances , so women who dont have children and childless lesbians reap rewards at present.

Any attempt to ‘correct’ the gap would leave them worse off but have the surprising boost to men who have children to take all the paternity leave they wouldnt have been arsed taking as theres no point in them being dedicated to their career since you just get handed the money for not putting the work in anyway.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 72 ✭✭Vote4Napoleon

A genuine question, if a man is the sole earner and his wages are used to the benefit of the family be it if there are kids or whatever and the wife has free access to the wages is she deemed to be unpaid for her housework?

"The homemaker has the ultimate career. All other careers exist for one purpose only - and that is to support the ultimate career." - CS Lewis

Just putting the cat among the pigeons with that little quote. Heh :) I saw it recently and it gave me pause for thought.

I see an essential truth in the quote in that society is made up of people and people have all been raised by parent(s) or care givers usually in homes, and good raising of people in good homes makes for happier people and a happier society. Or at least conversely poor homelife and shoddy home making leads to problems in society. For everyone.

Am not saying it is the whole of the truth but it is part of the truth. A part that people feel a bit sheepish to advocate on behalf of now that individual hedonism and materialism has been elevated as forming a potentially higher purpose.

Examples - One big issue that is much under investigated are fatherless homes. Homeless children is another topical issue. Time poverty is another, a lack of time with ones children. Etc

Whether one has a partner or children or not most people by their work are contributing towards a hopefully more stable society that has the possibility of functioning homes and the possibility of good rearing of the next generation at its heart. Because everyone ultimately benefits from that. Less crime, more service, less unhappiness, more inspiration and innovation.
No one benefits from the weakening of societal fabric and bonds. Everyone plays a part.

PS Homemakers should be paid, dagnabbit!

PPS The gender pay gap is a myth. People earn the same per hour, for the same work, otherwise it is illegal.
