Do you remember what speed you were able to get?

We are talking almost a year ago but I looked back through my speedtest.net results and I got tests as high as 800 Mb to 900 Mb. This would drop in the evenings to 200 to 500 as far as I remember. Single thread performance was the main issue for me. Downloads from the browser were slow to a lot of places and I also had issues with upload speed, only getting about 5 Mb to dropbox and 20 Mb to Google servers. My old 100 Mb fixed wireless provider was doing better some of the time so I knew something was not right. I think it could have been down to how/where they interconnect with OpenEir in relation to me but who knows.

What does "contention at the exchange" imply to you? To me, it implies that there is no point in switching as no matter who you switch to the exchange is contended.

If they were honest they would say "there is an issue with our backhaul from this exchange and we may not be able to provide a gigabit connection from here". But then the customer would likely leave.

Pretty sure I'm the only Airwire customer in our exchange

What I was told is was on the open eir side as Airwire have no control there over the contention and that's why no further troubleshooting was carried out.

    What was the lie?

There is no contention at the exchange.

But what if the issue is with the interconnect?
I see no evidence that they have lied, they should be given a chance to clarify befors acusations are made.

It's likely that their bitstream connection from OpenEir is not capable of multiple gigabit connections. This is an issue for Airwire to resolve but it would cost them more to fix.

Sounds plausible but did they try to place the blame on another company?

In my case they said it was out of thier hands as the problem was at the exchange

there's been users on recently stating they need to reboot it very often

Make sure you're on the latest firmware

or if Eir allow just buy your own and be done with it

I think Eir stopped supplying the F2000 almost a year ago. Weak WiFi range and I had to reboot it every few days, sometimes more frequently. You can replace it with your own, which is what happened.

Been a year since ive been in this thread, fibre has been working out great since it was installed last year but my contract is up next month with eir. I see they've changed the packages and are no longer offering 300mbs (which i'm on now). Got to say i haven't had an issue apart from 1 day when they disconnected it for an hour to do something to the box outside. I'm still shopping around, does anyone recommend any other providers, i'm after landline phone(want to keep the same number) and the 300+ fibre.

yep, Eir retired the 300 plan last year and now only offer 150 or 1000.

Digiweb now offer 500 as a base plan, cheaper than Eir's former 300 plan.

Airwire are one of the few providers left that still have 3 plans available, 150, 500 and 1000.

take a look at both Airwire or Digiweb they have 500 plans at decent prices.

I went with Digiweb due to the phone being better. I'd have gone with Airwire if I was only after internet.

Airwire would be 64 Euro with their 150Mbps and phone - limited mins to mobiles but a number of countries covered for landline.
Digiweb are now 65 Euro for 12 mnths 500Mbps with phone - UK/Ireland 6000 mins landline and 1500 mins mobile calls.

We'd easily rack up over 10+ hours of calls to landlines/mobiles a month so the Airwire phone option doesn't suit us. Use dialwise (free call now) for international landlines other than the UK.

Stupid Question that's probably been asked a thousand but I haven't been able to find the answer on it.

Eir (I think?) have been installing the black boxes on the telephone poles about 1km up the road from my house, afaik these provide broadband to up to 4 households.
What are the chances of requesting one of these to be installed to service my house :D ?
Zero I'm guessing, but living in hope, if 4 houses got together, could we pay for the install?!

Thats actually really good, have you had any problems with digiweb?

Do Eir have a fair usage policy? They say unlimited but I'm pretty sure I've seen something about a fair usage policy of 1TB before, if that's the case then in this day and age that's a scandal

It was 1TB but that was removed for new customers and any customer who changed/refreshed their contract IIRC.

No bother at all. Very easy to contact via online chat and phone. One billing issue their customer service sorted - was just the new free calls not being applied in Dec. I bought a 2nd Fritzbox from them at a decent discounted price to get mesh wifi in the house. When I renewed last Aug I got a 2nd year 5 Euro pm discount as I was going to downgrade from 300 to 150....

I think there's been only one major outage in nearly two years which impacted a larger area than us.

The ping times are around 10-12ms and I know other ISPs are lower but, meh, unless you are a serious gamer where these things matter, it's irrelevant.

They have a 1TB fair use policy but suits me - I never get that close to it anyhow. I've also not read/heard here of anyone being charged or warned about exceeding the FUP with Digiweb either.

PS - I've had company business dealings with Airwire and also found them very accommodating and helpful, just they are not suitable for my home needs.

Just after renewing contract with Eir for basically a free upgrade from 300 to 1000 and continuing to pay the exact same amount every month as before.

With no plan by Eir to upgrade the 300 plan I decided either upgrading or moving provider as long as it didn't cost me anything extra. Most providers have a provider move of around 100 euros which I found off putting, so that started to turn me away from moving provider.

Eir's network itself is really good once your on it with very low pings/latency and of course no fair usage policy to worry about. Digiweb's new pricing structure was tempting but the fact that they will not remove or update their 1tb fair usage policy, despite saying it's not monitored is still a total deal breaker. Once there is a fairly stingy fair usage in the T&C, i'll never trust it.

Once Eir updated the 1000 plan to 64.99 a month for existing customers on July 1st I thought about it for a few days and then it just seemed the oblivious thing to do, no point paying 65 for 300/50 when you can pay the same amount for 1000/100. The extra upload will be the most noticeable benefit.

The only downside to this is i'm still using the F2000 so I am now thinking of buying my own Fritzbox and possibly wiring up the PS4 and Sky Box in the living room to the router.

I dunno , Digiweb seems to be TWICE cheaper, even with €100 activation fee.

tbh the only thing holding me back from the digiweb deal is the fair usage

Can't understand why they don't just remove it.

I can only assume they don't want customers that use large amounts of bandwidth.
They current don't enforce the cap because not enough people break it.

With most of their customers now going from 150 and 300 up to 500, will be interesting to see if more people break the cap and the possibility of them getting more serious about implementing that fair usage policy.

Be surprised if speed jumps at this level makes a big difference on peoples usage habits.

If you're already on 150mb for most people would it increase your usage jumping to 500mb?

I'm not even remotely limited by 150, so I can't see usage going up if I was on 500.
