Hopefully install more parking for two-wheelers.

Ah Salthill, why must you break my heart

Well Blackrock does have a dual carriageway bypass about 150 meters away from it's main street, though at least that also has proper dedicated cycle lanes.

Have a view of it from my desk, lots of bikes zooming by all times of day. One of best things DLR have done since they built the new library. Big reduction in old noise levels along the coast as well as it pushes the inbound (to Dún Laoghaire) traffic through Monkstown village.

Obviously they couldn't continue it all way to Booterstown due to issue around Blackrock train station, but the wide cycle paths in Blackrock park are also good. It will be interesting to see how the addition of route on Strandroad in Sandymount (by DCC) will make to usage.

Looks like that may not be going ahead anymore

Hard to say, they remove all the mini-roundabouts on the Strand road (3), and they've been working at traffic lights at Merrion gates. It was suppose to kick in yesterday.

Looks like the Sandymount residents got a halt put on it on Friday via High Court order:

28 Galway City school principals coming together to request for safer cycling infrastructure...

An incredibly damning development for the City Council, reflective of their abject failure over decades.

The vast majority of *city* schools are well served by footpaths, with crossing already having traffic wardens. The kids are well able walk already.

They really aren't. And the letter is about cycling infrastructure anyway.

But it shout be safe to cycle to school as well.
My daughter wanted to cycle to school ( live in Ballybane, school in Renmore) and after going with her a few mornings, I called a halt. It wasn't safe. Not only getting across the Dublin Rd, but around the school itself. Parents dropping off their kids just couldn't care less about how they drove or where or how they parked.
Infrastructure and behavior around schools needs to improve greatly.

Mrs OBumble we need to reduce the barriers to active travel.

If someone has the option of a 1hr walk or a 15min drive... a lot will go for the drive.

If the options are 1hr walk, 15 min drive or 20 min cycle... you'll see a lot opting for the cycle.

If the options are 10min walk or 5min cycle... walk will typically be the choice for those living that close.

In many areas the cycle option will actually be considerably faster than car during the school rush. But being in the car in heavy traffic might still be faster than the walk.

The car park beside the gym in Renmore was near empty this morning yet there was the usual illegal parking along Rowan Ave and Melody Court. Some parents would drive into the classroom if possible.

A garda sergeant said the exact same about 20 years ago! :D

Agreed. How can you possibly construct cycle lanes to protect against inherent lawlessness in the population?

With physical separation from motorists. Painted lines don't offer protection.

The fact we think it normal to have to pay people to protect children from cars is another admission of abject failure.

And yet you defend kissing gates designed to deter joyriders which frustrates and inconveniences all cyclists, pedestrians and particularly people pushing prams and chairs.

Time for making submission for the Galway City Development Plan 2023-2029 is almost at a close, specifically closes at midnight tomorrow 05th Mar.

To make a submission go to - https://consult.galwaycity.ie/ and select "Register New User". Once done, go ahead and make a submission

You can view all submissions made so far here - https://consult.galwaycity.ie/en/node/5/submissions

You can view the dashboard here - https://consult.galwaycity.ie/en/node/5/dashboard

    https://twitter.com/GalwayCycling/status/1367454988948103173?s=20

You know how people say "why are the council doing this" or "why have they decided to change all X to Y" or why don't they do X", well the City Development plan lays out the objectives for the next few years, in this case 2023-2029.

If you want to see protected cycle lanes, make a submission

If you want to see speed limits of 30kph, make a submission

If you want to see greater permeability, make a submission

Don't be afraid to take photos, include maps with notations, your own drawings to provide context etc etc.

    Taking the hint yet? ;)

Not quite - no reason was even given for the defense of the annoying and pointless kissing gates at either end of the cycle lane at South Park...

Kissing gates are designed to keep motorised two wheelers out of footpaths. They worked well when such vehicles were always large. But as motors have got smaller, it's more challenging for them to be effective.

Any time I asked a local Cllr they either respond or the executive respond to them that the reason is to keep "scrambler motorbikes" out.

Did Galway City ever have a "scrambler motorbike" problem? 30yrs ago when I lived out in rural Galway. There were a lot more motorbikes and scooters about. Today the no number of motorbikes of any category on the roads (in the area I grew up or) in City now is miniscule here in 2021. The CSO stats for motorbike sales shows a similar picture.

But how is that relevant in South Path when it's wide open to scramblers at the Claddagh Hall end?
