I dunno, I think they are getting closer to the right structure. The early tournaments of 3 team groups werent great cause teams could have only 2 games (or less due to weather). The last two tournaments were very unfair on the lower ranked teams as only one team progressed from the first round group s of four. This time though with 2 teams progressing from the first round they seem to have gotten the balance right with giving lower ranked teams exposure to being in a World Cup, a genuine opportunity to progress if they are good enough and also avoid having too many vastly one-sided games at the finals.

Also, as Afghanistan have shown, play well enough at T20 in between world cups and keep your ranking high then you can avoid both qualification and the first round.

For once the organising bodied seem to be doing something right.

It is definitely better than it was but my main gripe with it is this.

We have already played these teams and topped a qualifying group.

Now we will have to play them again, and beat them again, to qualify again.

Yep, I take that point alright. Hard to work out an ideal system, if say you only allowed two teams to qualify then its very tough for lower ranked teams to get any experience of being at a World Cup. It also doesnt allow much of a margin of error for the likes of ourselves (we were very fortunate to top that group).

Could try something like qualifying four teams and having them join the top 10 ranked teams in 2 groups of 7 in the World Cup as one option though

Thats exactly what I would do and I think it would be fair.

Theres no guarantee that England, Australia and India will meet though so its never going to happen

Only game certain to happen between those three this time round is England v India.

Oman 4 down now. They had a great start but Namibia have wrestled control.

92/7 now. Looks like Namibia into the world cup

    Namibia win

Their first ever qualification for a T20 World Cup. They appeared in one 50-over World Cup back in 2003, so understandably, they was a lot of emotion after their victory.

Oman were awful again with the bat. Hard to see how they can win tomorrow when their confidence is on the floor, and the same goes for UAE.

Ah right. I got it wrong then. I thought the set up was one group with the top 4 advancing

Scotland 104/1 in the 13th and well on the road to qualifying

Nope, two groups of six and top 2 advance from each group.

Shorter boundaries in Grp A's Dubai pitch I believe, they were massive in Abu Dhabi!

198/6 in the end for scotland

Wicket third ball not what the doctor ordered

12/2 not looking good, can almost write this one off!

Yep not looking good for the Emerati. Interesting that the three playoff games have finished with wins for group A sides (assuming the scots close out this one)

    Sionara UAE!

Yep all out 108. Easy enough for the Scots in the end

Oman 31/4 in the 7th over

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,157 ✭✭✭VillaMad

Oman 101-7 off 18 overs. Poor again from them with the bat but they did bowl Hong Kong out for just 102 in the group stage, so they will back themselves. Easier to get bigger scores though in Abu Dhabi.

50 runs off the last 3 overs for Oman see them reach 134-7.

Gives them something to bowl at.

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,157 ✭✭✭VillaMad

    Hong Kong 13-3 after 2.4.

Horrible start for them. Just need somebody to stay at one end.

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,157 ✭✭✭VillaMad

Hong Kong 93-7 with 5 overs left. Need 41. McKechnie the key.

Oman win by 12 runs and become the last team to qualify.

A decent game to finish a very good tournament (Competitive Stages anyway), it will be interesting to see how the qualified sides approach these final matches. I would like to see some of Singh,Tucker and McCarthy in action in the next match and hopefully Craig Young to retain his place after figures of 4/13 against Nigeria.

I’d like to see an almost identical team for the next game.

We have hitters, solid batsmen, good pace and tidy spin bowlers.

Let these lads get as much match practise as is possible before Australia.

But for the love of god get Tucker in for Wilson ASAP
