Would love to know what's been going on in the background between his team and sponsors since he dropped out of TdF and then announced he'd be using a non branded bike.

Not the biggest fan of watching TT's but was memorized by Denis - cool as a cucumber on the bike

What a disappointment on Evenepoel's face, while on a hot seat, lol! ;)

Speaking of Dennis, I have very strong feeling his nearest future is not in Bahrain-Merida and decisions have already been made.

Nothing on any of his team's social media accounts to congratulate him.

Plus he used a BMC bike rather than his team bike and the while Tour de France thing

Basically the equipment supplied is **** with loads of issues. He rode is old BMC today.

Think he used a Kask helmet as well (not his team sponsored Rudy one)

Well if they don't like him...

So based on what he should be riding for his team, and what he rode today equipment wise, the differences were, Frame, Cranks, Wheels, Helmet, Rear Mech, and possibly the bars and extensions setup.

He's under contract for next season, so someone's getting paid either way if he wants to move.

The story is Evanpoel in 2nd. What a talent. World Champion in Junior ITT and Road Race last year. Skips U23, straight to World Tour, wins a Classic on his own while working as a Super Domestique. Now this! He is not compared to Eddie Merckx for no reason. How many TDF will this guy win?

Not the only young lad to do well this year either.

Possibly none, but he will win a huge amount of one day classics.

I think Dennis will take a year off and concentrate on the Tokyo Olympics. I'm not sure what team would take a chance on Dennis and buy him out of his contract.

    P.S.

I like the guy and wish him the best.

Dimension Data, or whatever they're going to be called, ride BMC bikes and need regular WT Points.

Hard to see his current team putting up much of a fight to keep him, given he's essentially a poor advertisement for their sponsors.

You don't have to use team sponsored stuff for the worlds though. Why wouldn't he use what he used last year.

Campernats is going to DD next though was thinking with the BMCs would Dennis go there aswell

Seems some trade teams arent keen on riders using non team issued kit for worlds
though the pressure from trade teams and sponsors is ever-present, as Linda Villumsen learned when she rode a blacked-out, non-team-issue bike to the world time trial title in 2015, and was nearly sacked on the spot by UnitedHealthcare bosses.

It's also become the story - Merida TT bikes are so bad just look at what Denis had to do. So rather than the good publicity of a world champion riding for Merida (only the very interested care about the bike) they get the bad publicity of 'how will he do on the piece of crap Merida?' every time Denis rides.

  • Registered Users Posts: 105 ✭✭PringleDemon

Merida also manufactured the Specialized TT bike that came 2nd to Dennis .

How can their TT bikes be so far behind their sister companies machinery or is Dennis making a strong statement to get a moved forced through away from Bahrain-Merida Team ?

This! Merida make Giant who tool a worlds with Tommy D on a Trinity - how can Merida be making such an awful TT bike when they could use the lessons learnt from the trinity? There may be trademark/design etc. issues but Merida own Giant!

Has it been mentioned whats so bad about the Merida bike? Or is it a case of the BMC just being so much better.

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,383 ✭✭✭cunavalos

The same can be said for the issues with the skinsuit as Sportful (Bahrain Merida kit suppliers) are actually also the parent company of Castelli and some other brands.
Anyway the important question is whether he used a hambini bottom bracket in his cervelo as we all know due to the poor tolerances in cervelo's design he would be giving away watts otherwise.

Apologies for the brainfart , or course it was a BMC he was riding

Merida make Specialized bikes not Giant . Giant make for many other brands including Trek , Scott Colnago etc

Yeah I think the helmet was also part of it - can't remember the two brands but the 'dumped' one certainly wouldn't be seen as inferior.

Firstly I dont think Dennis is taking any years off...He is World Champion and needs to make money ...you dont not race in the rainbow stripes and in those circumstances

It seems to me that Dennis's Tour de France melt down was not solely about equipment
Dennis had ridden a very good Tour de Suisse but came out at the Tour and didn't even from the word go try for GC, for a stage or anything ?? He was riding off the back from the 3rd stage and he wasn't ill, injured or tired ....Seemed to me he was in some disagreement with the team that went beyond the TT equipment. His Tour de Suisse form hardly went out the window so fast

It was mentioned in the Cycling Tips podcast yesterday that the disagreement with management was to do with the skin suit.
