This is the bit that made me laugh out loud:

"Ms McDonald said it would be “inappropriate to comment” on Mr Hampton’s mental health issues."

well it would though, wouldnt it? A politician making statements about a person she doesnt know?

Would you think it acceptable for a party leader to make public comments about a private individual she doesnt know? - because it looks to me like you do. personally, I dont. Private citizens are private citizens no matter who they will their money to

The absolutely brilliant Audrey Carville interviewed Mary Lou this morning. It was a masterpiece in highlighting the hypocrisy of the SF position on power sharing in Northern Ireland. It shows how transfixed SF are with keeping out of government in Norn Iron until they know what is happening with Brexit. Totally transfixed with what is happening in Westminster, and not with the practicalities of representing their voter base. No statesmanship in SF. Hurlers on the ditch.

Every party in NI needs to put their differences behind them for a few months, forget about the Irish language act, RHI, same sex marriage, abortion and focus solely on Brexit and its implications for the North.

The province is going to suffer due to Brexit, and they are all letting down the population by doing f all.

Most of the north wanted to remain in the eu. the dup dont - plus they have legitimate questions to answer before they can be trusted with power sharing again. The idea that stormont getting back will make brexit any easier is pie in the sky unfortunately - especially with the dup involved. whats the point in a power sharing executive when one side doesnt want what the rest of the north wants?

we all know whats going to happen next. There'll be a border and that'll basically be the last straw for those who trusted the british government with the peace process. bad enough they never handed over financial power - as they were meant to. to have a border back again just shows the british government for what they are

While I applaud your dog like devotion to your dear leader, I regularly laugh at some of Mary Lou's utterances and will continue to do whenever I feel the urge.

While I applaud your dog like devotion to whataboutery, I'd like you to humour me and answer my question.

As your recent post makes very clear, you and I don't share the same sense of humour, so I strongly suspect that I would be incapable of humouring you. It's tragic, but I know my limitations.

lovely way to launder a bit of cash if you think of it. get an aul fella sympathetic, get him to square it off with a solicitor and bobs yr dead uncle whos left you a few million all above board.

    beats running drugs/protection rackets/building fire-hazard apartment blocks doesn't it

Yes, that has been the implication in the Sunday Independent reportage for its, eh, "unsophisticated" readership.

However, this morning The Irish Times has a profile of the man. According to it, his wealth was inherited from his businessman father, entails a long-running challenge to the will and a tragic record of mental health issues (which some classy people in this thread made fun of). So, well done to the anti-Sinn Féin drones for offering us the same poor judgment and set-piece paranoia they would have offered us in 1993-94.

The life and extraordinary times of Sinn Féin’s million-euro donor

It’s not anything like on the scale the SF story is though. Outlets up north are all over it. They weren’t with the DUP money.

The DUP's cash for ash scheme could cost half a billion. Some of the farmers who be benefited from the scheme were very close to the DUP. Brian Foster, Arelene's husband comes to mind.

It’d be more honest for you just to say ‘i made totally inaccurate comments earlier about a public representative and a private citizen who died in another country’ - rather than more avoidance techniques

Legal question over €1.6m left in will to Sinn Féin
Will leaves money to party in Republic, where donations are limited to €2,500 https://www.irishtimes.com/news/politics/legal-question-over-1-6m-left-in-will-to-sinn-f%C3%A9in-1.4024054 doubt any authorities will act

We should always be aware that 'English' and 'British' are not necessarily ubiquitous, there's loads of English people with no Irish heritage, generally left-wing or socialist in outlook whom support a United Ireland, they sort of see us as 'the enemy of my enemy (Westminster/the Monarchy) is my friend' as well as a surprising number of middle and upper class English whom are Hibernophile by instinct, having a rugged and romanticised perception of us as people who are earthy, 'a good laugh' and are connected with hunting, fishing, rugby, etc, all the tweedy outdoorsy stuff as well as the famed liking for 'the drink'.

Middle Class English people, lifestyle and locations are as dull as dishwater in comparison so who can blame them and if they like us and can think outside their boxes then they're welcome as far as I'm concerned.

Well I appreciate his donation, I don't vote but it still will help the Gaelic communities of Ulster which is what Sinn Fein do best. Anything that annoys unionist is welcome.
