Well, people always talk about bringing back the Attitude Era. This is about as Attitude Era as it gets i'm afraid. The type of stuff you would have seen Al Snow and Big Bossman doing.

People long for Austin v McMahon, the Rock doing good comedy, that type of thing. I don't think people are after this silliness.

Yeah, the mature stuff! Like Yurkel the Clown, Mae Young giving birth to a hand, The Rock making Kevin Kelly pick his nose or Triple H roofying Stephanie and marrying her!

So apparently Lars Sullivan used to star in some gay adult films before becoming a wrestler.

Weird note to end the decade.

Mad how much that kinda of thing happens especially in America

Funny thing for a homophobe to do.

The timeline seems to be he did the videos a few years before the comments he posted. Reading over on Reddit, the bodybuilding scene (as I imagine most industries that rely on such extreme body images are) is full of predators, promising that doing risqué shoots will establish contacts and open up opportunities.

Fact is a lot of wrestlers have soft core photo shoots in the early careers. So if anything, depending how this stuff came about, it could explain some of his mental health issues.

Mind, it doesn’t explain the racism, nor excuse the horrifically homophobic **** he said. But it’s a good reminder that these stories can often have multiple layers we aren’t fully aware of.

Lars looks like he's great at putting young guys over. He'll have a bright WWE career ahead of him.

  • Registered Users Posts: 3,050 ✭✭✭ThePott

It definitely doesn't excuse his posts but considering as was pointed out the videos are probably before those posts, there is probably some serious self-loathing going on.

He's a fairly unlikable guy in general but based on all the homophobic hate, I'm guessing he might have done it out of desperation or something. So who knows. Not sure what the reaction is going to be from WWE or if there will be one. As was pointed out a lot of people have this stuff in their past and it's not something they should be shamed for. I think it sheds possibly a new light on Lars even if he's still a pr1ck.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 502 ✭✭✭sirmanga

Lars could be in trouble with WWE. Triple H won't want his kids googling "Lars Sullivan" and seeing those porn pictures. Just like Chyna.

But if you're a thug rapist like Mike Tyson you'll get a Hall of Fame induction and be venerated on WWE TV.

  • Registered Users Posts: 3,050 ✭✭✭ThePott

True, I think it's a bit of a different age though.
Chyna's career was also post WWE afaik.
Lars had this before WWE. I think a few talents have done that before too without issue.

Ah I don't know. Tyson was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2012, not that long ago. Whatever it is about him, it's not just WWE, but the entire media/entertainment industry seem to have just let his rape conviction slide.
WWE removed Hogan from the HOF in 2015 over racist remarks. So what does that mean? Saying bad words is worse than pinning a woman down and raping her? WWE sure is a weird place.

Porn was just a (pitiful) excuse not to induct Chyna.

X-Pac has made porn and is about to be inducted for a second time.

Paige and Xavier Woods (future HoF) are still scooting along. Others have done softcore porn and nude modelling.

But as mentioned, WWE is a weird place.

Ah yeah the rape stuff is inexcusable but as you said Tyson has skated by on it. The difference is that one is criminal though. WWE firing someone for doing an adult film in this day and age before being in the company wouldn't be a great look.

The Paige stuff is a little different as that was private material that was made public, not her fault in anyway. Lars knew this would be public. As mentioned a few people have made adult stuff pre-WWE, don't think there'll be much fallout.

    That's the end of him.
He had a anxiety attack before going out to do something with John Cena. WWE is swimming with the sharks and any drop of blood other talent smell they will bury you.

Then he makes some homophobic references. Now this comes out. He's done.
They can't sack him cause that would look homophobic but expect him to do nothing now but jobs. Not on a raw or smack down too

I mean the anxiety attack was unfortunate and hopefully he's worked on stopping them.

The other stuff as you say may be harder to get around. Also seeing as big E especially was less than impressed and publicly said so probably hasn't helped.

The videos in and of themselves aren't a problem it's the comments he made after them and the fact that WWE is a PG company might have cooked his goose.

Private footage being leaked publicly is not the same thing as making porn for profit. Company had to support both, it was the right thing to do.

Re: Lars, I think WWE ought to let him go.

If they did take that 100k off him as they claimed, he should get that back.

However, I think it's time he was released. It had been reported that his anxiety issues were in part down to worry over the stuff that came out earlier this year coming out. Obviously we can assume he was aware this was also out there. If I am WWE, I am looking at this person who has caused really bad publicity and pressure from sponsors once already this year. Clearly the company is not crazy on employing people who have done pornography. It feels like a reasonably good bet that they would have asked him 'is there anything else you need to disclose?' when this came up. I just don't see how you could trust him, and I don't imagine he is very popular in the locker room.

None of which is to say I don't feel for the guy. Clearly there is some deep seated self loathing there with the comments he made post porn, and we know of his anxiety issues. Mental health is a tough deal. My feeling is public life might not be the best thing for him. I wish him well.

I really don't think the porn should be a big deal. He's probably ashamed of it, yeah, but no way should he be let go because of it.

  • Registered Users Posts: 28,799 ✭✭✭✭CastorTroy

Wasn't Mickie James in something as well?

Gotta wonder if it was spotted before but no one wanted to admit to watching the videos. Though I would say it was likely someone involved or knew him that pointed it out after a falling out.

I hope Lars gets another go in WWE. Why should he be let go? Just cos he did porn? So what? Its not illegal. Poor fella meant to have mental issues as well.

Hope he is at least given a chance in WWE again.

    Not for the porn.
For the racism and the homophobia he previously put online.

I forgot about that! He apologised for that though didn't he? I believe in second chances for everyone but he might be pushing his luck where he has had too many headlines!

I think Titus gave a reasonable response to the comments around the time they came out...

    https://www.wrestlinginc.com/news/2019/05/titus-oneil-reveals-his-thoughts-on-the-lars-sullivan-654203/

As for the porn stuff, he will receive no punishment for that.

Because WWE gives people forms to fill out before they are hired specifically to find out if they have things that might pop up later down the line which would cause WWE a PR headache. It is extraordinarily unlikely that Lars advised them he had made a ton of homophobic and racist comments online, and performed in pornography of a homosexual nature, and they decided to hire him anyway.

Most likely he lied to them. And if that is the case, I would fully expect them to release him. Would you employ someone who lied to you?

It's not a creche. They are a publicly traded company for whom PR is a sensitive issue. Put him in the main event of Wrestlemania and have 8 year olds googling his name, see how that plays with parents, sponsors, mainstream media etc.

We don't know how stringent their background checks are.

For instance, at the beginning of the year Shotzi Blackheart was selling pictures of her excrement to fans for a fiver. She was signed and debuted on NXT last week. If you can get in the door after doing that the bar must be pretty low.
