I noticed it when I drove past earlier. That area is a total cesspit. I know it's not everyone, and you can't tar them all with the same brush. But surely if you wanted to get anywhere in life, you would want to get out of that area, and leave it behind.

I remember being stopped at the lights beside the statue a few years ago. A woman was sweeping up her front yard. And rather than put what she'd swept up in her bin, she just dumped it over her front wall into the street. So many of the local residents are short sighted and only care about their own tiny patch.

Move the statue to somewhere it will be better respected. No point just spending more money to protect it from the animals that live there.

After passing earlier, and seeing the statue defaced again, I took a few photos of the street, and how the locals treat it all the time.

That's disgusting but I see it alot cycling through dublin early morning, the litter wardens should be allowed use the batons.

This happens every couple of months. Gardaí just don't have the resources to wait that long. Pull the statue out and put it somewhere else.

Not catch the scumbags doing it and punish them harshly. Why can't they clean it off over the weekend and stick a camera up to see what time of day it gets damaged. The only way is to have high areas of crime or at least the main public areas of Dublin covered with cameras plugged into a central manned video hub. And have patrol cars swanning around 'on the beat' . Close and ready to be at the scene within minutes.

What annoys me about that statement from the Northwall Community Association is that they're basically blaming Dublin City Council for not putting the statue out of reach of the vandals. We always hear how the area is so close-knit, so somebody knows who's doing it and isn't speaking up. So in that case why should the council have to spend money protecting it when somebody local surely knows who keeps doing it? Personally I'd fcuk it into the canal it's beside because imo it's a hideous eyesore that I pass twice daily going to and from Docklands station. But if it has to stay there then the locals need to man-up and shop whoever is vandalising it rather than blaming others for not doing enough.

There are already two guys awaiting trial. Maybe that was based on local information.

Loose lips sink ships. Maybe someone has the brains to keep their actions to themselves. Doubt it though, most people are talkers.

It is an all the time response from local politicians and now from the North wall community association.

On Friday ' independent ' Councillor Anthony Flynn was responding to the proposed swimming facility planned for the Liffey.

No new fancy facilities, only certain locals i. E. unemployed should have facilities, of their choosing provided.

You just need one of the lesser used cars. There's lots of parking along that road that could be used. It'd likely take up a night of a Garda car, maybe two if they're unlucky. And it'd be well worth it. The Gardai could do a bit of paperwork in the car overnight and catch up on things, or just watch Youtube for a few hours.




Then you have the people responsible. Don't give them a slap on the wrist, give them a month in a cell and then look at how the Statue remains untouched indefinitely afterwards. Turning a blind eye or spending half a million on security measures is the go-to for dealing with crime in Ireland and it doesn't work.

There's parking. Which the locals look directly down on. Any Garda sitting there will be seen and reported via many many whistles in about 30 seconds flat.

Catch up on paperwork? Gardai don't do paper in the car. This isn't the LAPD, there's no computers in cars here nor are there enough Gardai to simple sit watching a statue for a month.

I dunno where they month in a cell comes in. You mean prison? They ain't getting prison for this. They will get legal aid though.

Des geraghty on morning ireland saying its not locals doing this, perhaps he thinks vandals are getting on the dart, luas for an evening of vandalism in sheriff Street? I think not. This is local and appears to be very deliberate and focused

Maybe in Paris, if somebody vandalized the Eiffel Tower, somebody in Rome vandalized the Pantheon or the Little Mermaid in Copenhagen.. the local ‘cummunity’ association would be ok and reasonable in accusing those designed and who left those amenities in areas accessible to the public for the vandalism. Right ! That’s how mad these excuses are.

I grew up in an estate where there was never any hassle, great community, residents association the whole lot and people took care in looking out for each other, their area and so on. A collection was made over time to install an inscribed water feature at the first corner of the estate, permission was sought, granted and a big massive limestone decorative, inscribed and functioning water trough/feature was installed.

It was constantly damaged to the point that eventually the residents association gave up spending money repairing it... eventually it became so wrecked it was taken away and destroyed.

Those damaging it were from a neighboring, less affluent estate. Unhappy that we’d been able to avail and enjoy of something they hadn’t got... so destroy.

It was replaced by a big flower bed, again planted by and looked after by the residents... one night.... you guessed it.. thugs showed up and kicked it to bits...

And we have elected politicians coming out and defending these people and their behaviors... Burke is now on record as being a bully enabler and supporter... excusing their crimes and blaming people instead who just wanted to add an art piece to an area.. sad and unacceptable.

We're talking about Sheriff Street here, anything nice or otherwise will be attacked.

And before people go jumping all over me, I lived in Lawrence's Mansions and Phil Shanahan House for seven years. In fact my wife was born in the family flat in Lawrence's then we bought our first house and lived in Eastwall for a long time after, I'm also Summerhill born so I won't accept crap that I'm generalizing and don't know the area of the locals.

The statue, yes like most people I think its an eye sore but it doesn't have to be attacked constantly like this, but it will be. This will be a continuing situation until its removed.

They should take away the Luke Kelly statue and put it in a museum somewhere.its gone beyond a joke now.
In its place they should put a 20 foot high statue of a rat wearing a tracksuit,for all the pond rats to go to worship instead.it would be like Disney world to them.would bring a tear to their eye.

I took from Des Geraghty's interview that it would be ok if the people who did this were sending a legitimate massage, that it could be a cry for help.
