No, most sensible decision I made to get away from a car I really hate. I can't justify paying the balloon on something like that and to risk serious money if something fails out of warranty with all the tech. The Matrix headlights alone are big money if they fail.

If I wait then until the end of the PCP I would have got stung for excess mileage which would be even more than it would have been now in November.

I've been offered so low because no one wants to take it but will take it if I let them give me stupid money for it.

Not even Sheehy motors in Carlow would take it back after buying it off them.

It's only worth money if you can sell it, I couldn't no matter how hard I tried, unless I gave it away for 11-15 K.

If I were to contact a few VW dealers they might offer more if I were getting a brand new EV, that's not going to happen again, or any new car.

Paying 19.5 K for a car with 26,000 Kms is a far more sensible choice and no balloon at the end, it will be mine in probably 2-2.5 years and I will keep it, I really like it and it's a lot more fun and engaging to drive and I don't have all the other ev nonsense to deal with + the ID3 crap software and infotainment.

2nd hand car sales have climbed since brexit and it was actually a pretty good deal for the car with 26,000 Kms compared to a high mileage diesel, I didn't want a diesel and a lot of cars are going for stupid money 2nd hand, I had a look at some in Carlow Town and they're nuts.

It's the most sensible move I've made in years.

Well it's like this, PCP had to end sometime and it makes no financial sense buying a new EV or any new car and I bought a sensibly priced car that I actually like a lot, less tech to go wrong and less software to frustrate me. I do not like all the tech in these cars now even some new ICE cars with big screens you wouldn't even see in a house 30 years ago. It's a joke and distracting and can only add to the road fatalities.

Screens were a solution to a problem that didn't exist and in a car I want separation from screens which I have to interact with so much in work and also crap software at times, I don't want this in a car if that makes sense ?

EV no longer interests me, I get far more enjoyment out of driving a car that weighs a lot less and has gears, I did the EV thing for 9 years.

I just want to get into a car I like and like driving and doesn't annoy the sh*t out of me.

And no, electric cars are not going to save the earth either, that's absolute horse sh1te.

And what's wrong with a petrol in fairness ? it does what I want and won't give me the hassle of electric and I can take the car where I want any time any where without the hassle, and fair enough, others will endure it but instead of taking the Outlander Diesel all the longer distances I can take the Cee'd, I do not like driving the Outlander, I hate crossovers and SUV they drive like sh*t and I wish they were all taken off the road, they're getting bigger and heavier every generation and our roads are too narrow, they're a joke.

Not interested in a Golf, I can guarantee I won't have the hassle trading the Cee'd petrol like the id.3 which I couldn't even trade ffs lol.

I like the Focus but can't guarantee that around the 2020/21 years they had solved the wet cam belt issue, most Petrol Golf and Focus I saw at the time had way higher mileage and were even more expensive.

I really am happy with the Cee'd though and it's quite an economical and poky engine, 5.0L /100 Km on the N7 and 5.4 motorway and 5.3 L/100 Km by the time I got home and off the motorway on my local roads I Bet I will see less than 5.0L. Either way it's good enough for me, I'm not sure a Diesel would be worth the extra money and with way higher mileage for a slight saving in fuel if even.

As long as you realise that your new "less to go wrong" car's manual gearbox has more moving parts than the full EV drivetrain. And don't get me started with a highly strung 3-cyl turbocharged engine with direct injection.

VW finance said many people are handing back the id cars for various reasons and the VW dealer who sold me the car said they can't sell new or old stock which is why they wouldn't take mine.

I was offered 11-15 K just to take the car off me by Non VW dealers, this would be the trade value of the car, they would just sell it on to the trade, it is low because they're not selling, if they were highly sought after I would have had absolutely no trouble.

The worst part is that the larger batter adds nothing to resale value so let this be a lesson to others, don't expect that spending more on a larger battery will add to the cost of the car at trade in, it won't.

But you're right, they might offer 20K on another brand new PCP on another brand new car, f1ck that, no way, never again, not just EV but any new car.

I've driven ICE for many, many kms over many years and have never had a single gearbox issue on a manual gearbox or even the clutch and no engine issues either despite higher mileage. Granted GDI engines are more of an issue but their greatest issue is owner neglect and that's proven time and time again. Maintenance is key and watching the oil levels.

If they gave me a free EV I wouldn't drive one again in a hurry, I'll happily risk ICE issues and manual gearbox over the boredom of EV driving and who's to say I won't have any battery or software issues, infotainment, headlights or anything out of warranty in the id3, don't assume that because a car has less moving parts that it's not going to be expensive hassle after warranty expires.

The 1.0L T-GDI engines will be fine once the owners look after them, their biggest issues with direct injection was lack of frequent oil changes and carbon build up on the valves and I have no issues with regular maintenance and after 200,000 Kms it will still be able to drive a lot further than an EV of the same age and fill up in a fraction of the time……………

Maybe but Kia sell EVs but they wouldn't take mine, neither would hyundai and countless other dealers and independent dealers or even VW themselves so maybe because you were trading a EV for EV who knows.

Had an i3 don't want another, and the rear doors are a pain and to be honest, I'm really happy to be back in an ICE car. No benefit to me having EV only more hassle, I did it for 9 years and won't do it again in a hurry.

You do know I hated the id3 ?, I wouldn't drive another id3 or even a id4 or any of VW's utter sh*t cars they sell today with their tesla wannabe interiors, many people complain about them, people who buy VW expect a proper ergonomic sensible interior, not the sh*t they're throwing up today that looks like it was designed by screen addicted teenagers. If someone wants a minimalist interior that makes the screen the entire focal point of the car then they bought Tesla.

We have almost 250000 km driven electric since 2015 and haven't had any issues with the EV bits. 181 Nissan had a software bug where one of the mirrors didn't unfold when the car was started when the preheat was on. Tesla Model 3 had pretty bad rear light condensation which is the only fault in 35 months/77k. Finally replaced the cabin air filter at 75k.

The ICE we have had on the other hand (this is admittely going back pre 2015 as we haven't had an ICE since):

Ford Escort: Shot gearbox bearings at about 30k miles

Ford Focus: Catalytic converted melted when the car had less than 2k on the clock

Passat 2.0: Worn valve guides at 130k miles, cylinder head rebuild.

Saab Turbo: Stuck oil control piston rings, engine overhaul needed at 130k miles

Fabia: Thermostat stuck in closed position, warped cylinder head. Can't remember what it had at the time.

Fiat Brava: Head gasket at 50k miles

So you have borrowed money to buy the Kia, what interest rate are you paying? I definitely think you're telling porkies when others here are saying they got far higher offers. I'm driving a Born for the last 10 months and never experienced any of the issues you experienced.

Never ever buy the fancy version new,

2nd hand loaded tour with its big ass battery is gonna be worth very little more than the boggy one.

Applies to all cars.

Now my own 2 cents....…almost.anything built in approx the last 20years isn't engaging ,fun,robust,durable or exciting so one may as well just commit to driving white goods and go EV. F all to run and infinitely more reliable.

If you want fun and engaging.....buy a motorbike

"buy a motorbike" Lol, I did, well, it's a Yamaha t-max 500 cc but it's a lot of fun.

Trust me, driving the kia manual is a lot more engaging than EV. At the end of the day after the novelty of EV, the joy and excitement of instant torque wears off electrics haven't much to offer except cheap fuel + the ridiculous weight dulls the experience even more.

I'd get the engine rebuilt before I go back to EV.

I get what I'm you're saying about being screwed on trade in, if you're looking for cash you'll always be over a barrel. Better to sell private in that case

PCP deals are designed to lock you into a particular brand after all, and a lot of dealerships shot themselves in the foot thinking they cold flip a 2nd hand EV for the same price as new. I've no sympathy for them, but they're certainly making the customers pay for their mistakes

I really don't think you'll find living with the Kia better in the long run, but we'll just have to see what the future holds

Ah yes, I do find the kia a lot better to drive and I love the interior much more, different strokes for different folks, I found EV good for years but that has worn off, when I say better to drive, With the exception of the i3 the leaf and id3 was ultra boring and it was especially heavy which really dulled the experience and it's suspension was trashy over sharper bumps so any ICE is going to be better to drive if you actually like driving a car vs the weight of an EV alone. EV was such a new experience, better in some ways not so in others but it was new experience.

I remember having the Leaf in for repair after I had a fender bender and they gave me a 1.0L 3 cylinder Micra, well I had great fun thrashing it around and it required hard work of the gearbox but it was a lot of fun on the back roads and it was light, this makes a big difference too vs the mad weight of electric cars but as the old saying goes, I'd rather drive a slow car fast than a fast car slow !

The kia isn't slow, it's not fast but speed and acceleration are not my priority these days, it's very impressive for a 1.0L and offers very impressive fuel economy, nothing like Electricity of course but these days not as big of a difference but there's more to life than saving money on fuel.

The issue with trade in was that nobody that I had contacted was willing to take the id3 not even Sheehy Motors in Carlow where I got it, you could understand some dealers but I was surprised VW wouldn't take it but they said they had loads of electric cars they can's sell and didn't want another, in the end I was glad to get out of it under the half rule.

So I'm a happy camper for now until something triggers me to do something else Mad but in all honesty this was the best move for me and I'm free of PCP. I won't be buying a new car again either way.

Now that the car is finally sorted I'm looking at changing the T-Max for maybe a Kawasaki Z650 RS, sat on one after I picked up the car, it was in a shop beside.

Sheehy’s have 2 used ID.3’s and 1 used ID.4 listed for sale on their website. Doesn’t seem like a lot for a dealer with a load of EV’s… 🤔

Now I’ve never owned an EV, but as I mentioned here last week, I’m pretty sure I’m gonna but an ID.3 (2022 or 2023), t seem to be hovering between €25k and €30k online from dealers. Is the software glitch a common problem or just in some unlucky ‘ Friday evening’ cars?

I'm just repeating what I was told, now had I said I want to buy a brand new id3 I'm sure they would have told me something different.

Software is an issue so is promise of major OTA updates, it never happened but the older ones are forever stuck on older software, if they receive further updates it will be minor.

If you can get something else then I highly recommend you look elsewhere, if you like playing with screens and menus while driving then the id3 is the car for you.

I hated the interior, software issues, screen controlling so much but some people love stuff like that.

I would highly recommend that you test drive a few cars and make sure if you do plan on getting an VW id car that you seriously take the time to play with the infotainment and then ask yourself, is this good when actually driving ? if you like it then my car comes up for Auction in Wilsons as Fits said a few posts above and you might get a cracking bargain but think carefully and get a test drive in the car from a dealer before you buy something from auction that you haven't had the time to fully check out, the car drove me demented and the headlight still has fogging up issues, hasn't happened in a few weeks but it does happen.

Things like replacing one of those lights out of warranty cost a fortune compared to halogen for example.

Out of warranty issues could be very expensive and you could find yourself with it off the road for weeks or months.

If you are interested in my old Tour 5 remember there are no rear door speakers.

Definitely approach electric car driving with caution and spend as much time in the car as you can before you buy.
