Query does anybody use Cacheflush or Power Timers on the H7s as the odd occasion box freezes up and never found the issue.

Off and on switch at rear and box is well vented

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 444 ✭✭cathy427

Where is currently the best place to buy the H7s that comes with most of the work done for ya - as in openvix set up.

I know will have to set up saorview for my area.

    Satcity E199.45

WOS in UK you will get hit with customs tax

Unsure on setup as need to ask them

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 22,130 ✭✭✭✭dxhound2005

WOS export it at £82.50. They charge £1 extra to load it with a version of Enigma 2.

    https://www.world-of-satellite.co.uk/zgemma-h7s

There will be Irish VAT at 23% charged on that and also charged on the postage and packing amount. Plus the delivery company collecting that for the Revenue will have their own admin fee. And there is the exchange rate to consider. Revenue keep the same exchange rate for a full month at a time, and it is shown on their website.

Unless the item is valued at above €150 there is no Customs Duty. Duty does not apply to postage and packing. And I think that satellite receivers are zero rated for Duty anyway.

I ordered one these on the 6th Dec

    https://www.world-of-satellite.co.uk/zgemma/zgemma-h82h

GBP £49 + £1 to flash it with OpenVix.

UK vat removed and shipping added … this is what I paid World of Satellite

€17.05 customs and handling fees had to be paid to An Post.

Item was delivered to me on 12th Dec.

Overall, very happy with the service.

It could be. Not sure one might think HDMI would be 'smart' enough to overcome obvious misconfig, maybe not. Can you get at it with openwebif?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 444 ✭✭cathy427

Thanks. Just in case people dont spot it - That's the H8 rather than the h7s.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,091 ✭✭✭CalamariFritti

Good question. Assuming ethernet is enabled on the h7s it will act like any DHCP client upon boot. So I guess you'll have to make your laptop a DHPC host/server of sorts. Or else is there a router in the house? Could you connect it to that? Even temporarily? The router network overview will tell you what IP it was assigned and then openwebif should work from there.

Just a blank screen is it? Not reacting at all to menu or setup buttons anything?

What have you connected it to? SAT and Saorview? How does it behave when you disconnect those?

Should at least get access to menu and setup screens. Is there an HDMI auto setting?

Since you now have openwebif access anything in the logs? /home/root/logs

Armed with the knowledge that WOS charge £15.99 for delivery to Ireland, and An Post is the delivery company, I can make a good stab at how much a H7S would cost. Using the Revenue exchange rate in December of 0.8338 for the VAT calculation. They will have another rate if delivery is in January 2025 or subsequent months. And the rate used by the Credit Card company or whoever for the transaction with WOS would be different, and liable to daily variation.

Base price including £1 for Enigma 2, £83.50. Postage and packing, £15.99. Total £99.49.

Euro equivalent €119.32. Plus Revenue 23% VAT €27.44, total €146.76. Add €4.95 An Post charge, grand total €151.61.

That's with WiFi and an image. £105.16 = €128.06 (Revolut) , VAT should be 29.45 and AnPost's €4.95 so total €162.46 (inc. WiFi)

I reckon the £1 to put the image on is well worth it as it means the box has been tested again :)

    Hopefully FedEx use Rosslare.

Is the 500GB SILENT SSD DRIVE fitted for £40 okish value ?

At that stage its about €220 and the Irish based guys are at €240 without the wifi stick. (Don't know if they add an image)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,733 ✭✭✭swoofer

soarsat is via sat on 9e. Do you mean saorview and have you an aerial plugged in. You have to tune in to your local transmitter in settings and save. That means configure the DTT TUNER TO IRELAND and region.

Not a great box , I have one. How is it working for you on BBC News HD or BBC 1 HD ? Any time I select those stations the box freezes.

Also , this box is on Amazon.de for 42 euro with 8.49 shipping.

Also a lot easier to send back , which most probably will in fairness.

Just a heads up on WOS " image installation service"

They do not stick the latest image on there.

My first VU Duo 4K SE , I had issues with it being only able to load 8 user bands of the 32 available on my Unicable II LNB.

I was using user band 1 for the walker TV in the kitchen ( defaults to this so had to be user band one ) so I needed user bands 2-9 for the VU box.

They asked for image details so I sent it to them. They said my image was really old and I should upgrade as there were bugs in that ancient image that " I " Loaded.

I posted them the invoice , saying I paid for them to install the latest image , which should have been 6.2 at the time but they had loaded 5.2.

So check on receipt that you have the latest image.

Its not that big a deal , only a euro , but dont assume they have loaded the latest , or even the correct , image.

Once the box is connected up to the internet ( this goes for VU , Octagon , and that crappy Zgemma H82H ), you can load the latest image to the box in less than 5 minutes anyways.

    Hi Necstandards,

Did you go ahead with this to get the signal to other tvs?

If yes - do the magic eyes work or how do you change channel at the 2nd tv?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 444 ✭✭cathy427

Hi alias no.9 - what method you end up using to watch it on the 2nd tv?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 91 ✭✭Don Juan II

Works find on BBC News HD and BBC1 HD. Channel change is instant, then after about 1 second there's a very very slight bit of jitter (barely noticable) and this it's perfect.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 311 ✭✭whoami1

Issue 1 - sometimes, when changing channels, I get picture but no sound. I have to change to another channel then back again to re-enable sound.

Issue 2 - I don't have any EPG data for the satellite radio stations.

Issue 3 - I mentioned this before, but haven't done anything about it yet: I get a very poor reception for BBC Four. usually no picture or sound, but sometimes it will clear. I suspect a faulty LNB, but it's odd that it should be this one particular frequency and all the others, as far as I'm aware, work OK.

You need to give a lot more information to get a proper solution but these boxes are not as easy as they appear. So here goes.

FOR 1 you should say image ersion used and skin, go menu setup about information, BUT can be diferent, write it down and post back.

FOR 2. How do you get the epg at present, is it crossepg, openepg, epgimporter.

FOR 3 I would need the frequency used but cant check until 7pm, go to bbc4 press ok and arrow up then with banner on bbc4 press menu and look at transponder info and then press blue button, see details.

Finally for all 3 problems it could just be the image used is out of date but for bbc4 i need the frequency.

I hope your box is the zgemma h7s and does it have a slot at rear for ssd/hdd?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 373 ✭✭a clanger

I bought from WOS prior to the customs change. The Zgemma was dead, dead dead out of the box and it was a pain to return along with the additional wait for a replacement. Replacement was fine i might add

@Capt'n Midnight 's advice to have an image installed for a quid is sound advice and wish I'd had it back then !

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 311 ✭✭whoami1

Sorry about that. You are, of course, correct, and my post was the sort of half-arsed minimal information dump that annoys me whenever someone does it to me ("I have a problem. Fix it.").

I have two H7S boxes, one with the internal disk upstairs and one with the slot in the living room. Both run OpenVix 6.6, the upstairs one on 6.6.013 and the living room one on 6.6.012. I have also experimented with OpenATV. The skin is Simple Ten Eighty on both.

The EPG is obtained through EPGImport.

The BBC Four settings I am using are 10818, V, DVB-S2, 8PSK, 23000, 3/4. This also includes BBC One regions for London, East, East Midlands; Radio Ulster; Radio Foyle; BBC Two Wales, two versions of CBeebies and two versions of BBC Four, the last of which has a black screen on one and CBeebies on the other at this time of the day (08:36).

The frequency is working at the moment on the upstairs box, I will need to attempt another manual scan on the living room one to check again.

08:49 update: after performing a manual scan on that frequency on the living room box, I now have all channels which can be received on that frequency at this time and they are currently coming through perfectly, however I expect that situation to change through the day into the evening. I will report back later tonight or in the morning.

That setup is nigh on perfect but i would not use epgimport for the sat epg but you may have a particular channel that will only fill with epgimport. vix has a very good built in epg maker, its openepg. i am doing a box at the moment and i checked the radio epg's and all populated but that was openatv 7.4. I will check openvix 6.6 in a little while. The loss of signal would be dish slightly out and the lnb arm could be loose. also a poor coonection and lastly outputs can fail ie good on some but bad on another. The loss of sound might be how audio is set downmix or passthrough. I would need the channel to do a proper check but it has happened to me and i just swop channel and carry on or a channel rescan can sort it.

Finally check for any obstruction in front of dish, you never know.

ps I checked the epg for radio channels and could get them all but I use OPENTV EPG and it works better if you have 2 cables. It was slow to populate a few channels so I just do a forced update via blue button..

A channel coming and going like that sounds exactly like a dodgy signal (due to one or more of: dish, lnb, cable, connection).

Happened to me in the past - Ch4 and a couple of channels on the same frequency were dodgy but ever other channel was 100%. A dodgy connection was the cause of the problem

I updated vix to the latest version 6.6.013 this morning, dont know exactly what happened but i am unable to restore plugins or settings in vix backup manager as i keep getting the error "sorry the feeds are down for maintenance, please try again later". When i try to download plugins or skins all i see in the Install Plugins page are Settings and picons :( I dont know what skin i was on, anyway to find out from backups? Where can i get a plugin to load onto a usb and install a local extension method?

I have tried multiple restores from older settings / image versions but the issue above reoccurs.

Any thoughts or help appreciated. Wish i had left things as they were but howsever.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,750 ✭✭✭greasepalm

Wonder if you had a bad install and need to reflash it say to a previous image. Sometimes restores dont go to plan and i setup from scratch . Is box getting a lan connection? as just checked feeds on WOS and are in the green meaning feeds should work and not down for maintenance.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 955 ✭✭✭downwiththatsor

I think the issue is with the feeds in the etc/opkg folder as no issues with Lan connection.

This is what i see in the folder. I will need to go lie down if i need to start from scratch :(

Any good guide for starting from scratch?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 955 ✭✭✭downwiththatsor

I have sorted the feed links, i went into the individual files in the etc/opkg folder and changed the paths to match the new directory to https://www.openvix.co.uk/feeds/openvix/release/6.6/

I still cant download plugins as no softcams folder, anyone know where the link to this is set?

You have a corrupted image and messing will only make it worse. You can have 4 images on that H7S and to flash a new image is easy but I never ever flash the latest image its always buggy and I don't care what they say on WOS. When you flash new image DONT use any restore settings, do you want to do it? And why do you need softcams??

Fair enough, lesson learned. Will do a clean install of Openvix so. Thanks for spelling in out.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,733 ✭✭✭swoofer

Now do this menu setup VIX, image manager, yellow for downloads and then use 6.6.012 I am using that, when you press blue it will give options , use a new slot etc.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 955 ✭✭✭downwiththatsor

So flash the new downloaded firmware to a blank slot, is there a possibility to restore any settings and channel lists then?

    Regards

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,733 ✭✭✭swoofer

no you want it brand new, its easy to do all you need, unless you have extras! if you restore you may get same corrupted files.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,750 ✭✭✭greasepalm

One of the things i mentioned before as a bad install ,and not doing restore as liking a fresh setup , glad your getting somewhere.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 955 ✭✭✭downwiththatsor

Thanks guys, back up and running even though i would prefer the old skin i had if i could remember what it was called. Picture in picture works well now (in 6.6.011) which i had problems with in my older firmware and settings.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,415 ✭✭✭andy1249

Probably just as well youve forgotten the skin. It was most likely what broke your install.

I started with the Tiviar , then the Zgemma , now on the VU boxes with some tinkering going on with an Octagon S8008 and a Zgemma H82h and over the years Ive learned the hard way , the one thing that kills installations is messing around with third party skins.

    Especially copycat sky skins

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,042 ✭✭✭UrbanFret

MagicHDnight is the best skin for these boxes I find. They really are very simple boxes to use and far superior to the crap that most installers will set up for you. Also they are well capable of the IPTV end of things .

Anyway to change default recording from /media/hdd/movie?

My movie list of recordings is showing as at /media/sda1/movie/

I tried in setup recordings, playback and timeshift but could not see the folder i needed or a way to edit it

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,750 ✭✭✭greasepalm

When i had 2 locations for recordings Hdd and Usb were both listed.

/media/hdd/movie is the default path as far as i member.

When setting up recordings it asks where to record does it not?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,750 ✭✭✭greasepalm

    Bump.

Query does anybody use Cacheflush or Power Timers on the H7s as the odd occasion box freezes up and never found the issue.

Off and on switch at rear and box is well vented

will need to reflash box as cacheflush throws up error and wont install.

'mount' will show that /media/hdd is /dev/sda1

    /dev/sda1 on /media/hdd type ext4 (rw,relatime,data=ordered)

Sorted, i changed the mount to media/sda in mount manager and removed a pen drive from a rear usb port before rebooting and recordings start in the same location as the old recordings now. Thanks for all the help

To get your skin name you can flash back to the slot with bad image BUT if you overwrote it😏. Do a long press on the power button and a menu will appear, same to go back to good slot. When you find the skin give me name.

For cacheflush seldom used now as boxes have large memory. Would you believe I never used Power timers. Also the PSU may be on way out. Disable both and see results.

Why everyone wants the sky skin makes me laugh as only used simple 1080.

I dont / cant use cacheflush as it wont load and not used Powertimers yet.

Yes might have to uprate PSU voltage as getting more and more freezing

    @cathy427

Set up the bouquet and download the m3u8 playlist for the bouquet using the openwebif and upload that to whatever IPTV app you use on the second TV.

I'm using Smart IPTV which requires a one off payment per TV and the playlist is uploaded via a website.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 444 ✭✭cathy427

    Great. Thanks for that.

Dont have iptv app yet - is it necessary to use a paid for one to get this to work? Or do all IPTV apps require a payment - only asking cause not using their channels just sending from box to a different tv

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,372 ✭✭✭alias no.9

The SmartIPTV App is available on Samsung and LG Smart TVs and probably many more. Activation fee is something like €5 which is good value when compared to running cables or using another STB or a Firestick or something. There are other apps but I didn't do a price comparison or trawl for a free one.
