They removed it because it didn't make any money

The few times I went there, it was damn good (IIRC). Very handy location (for me, anyway).

Granted, I never saw it busy, but thought I read about planning issues.

There was a planning issue but they didn't fight it. It lost money hand over fist. It depended who was working as to how good it was. Depending on the server the rice could have been cooked in the morn and needed a chisel to take it off in the eve because they were trying to keep waste down.

The food was tasty if you got lucky with fresh ingredients but serving food in a forecourt between the smell of fuels and the spray from the carwash was never very appealing!

It's an awful pity really, now the only burrito option in Newcastle is that god awful Zambero that replaced tolteca. Both Tolteca and Cantina were tasty affordable options, Zambrero is overpriced bland small portions.

On another note, I just took a look on Google reviews. It was doing abysmal, not even scraping 3 stars, however in the last 2 weeks there seems to be several accounts with less than 4 reviews giving 5 stars and referencing the stores in Dublin (both cannot be visited in recent months due to travel restrictions, Infact only 3 weeks of Zambreros operation didn't have travel restrictions) also bringing the score up to 3.7 stars. Extremely suspicious in my opinion, looks as if the reviews are not genuine.

The fact that all these new reviews are getting responses from the owners is very strange too, when before this did not occur.

Yes, Cope are in there for a while now.

Planning notice up on the Skef to demolish/refurb (not sure which) the building which DNA nightclub is in, and replace it with hotel rooms.

A relative of mine who lives on Rahoon Rd mentioned to a taxi driver that he’d seen some new people in the neighbourhood and was told of the change. I don’t see much discussion about it online.

I thought they took it short term, as the cold-weather provision.

I ordered there a few weeks after it opened and put a negative review on their Facebook because the portions were tiny. I've just checked the page now and they've switched off reviews...

Miserable portions, I won't be returning there.

The fake Google reviews are painfully obvious.

It's sad to think I may never be in Tonery's pub ever again.

I hope Hughes in Woodquay survives COVID.

Hopefully, people will realise they don't need a pub to socialise

Hopefully people with little to offer can support local businesses by buying a mineral or keeping stum.

Cant beat a pub to socialise obviously you don't but you would be in the minority on this, there are other things to do but you cant beat a night out in the pub.

I miss mid week pub quizzes. A cup of tea or a sparkling water, bit of a buzz and lots of craic. Great way to spend an evening and support a cause. Also miss the odd messy late night in a pub.

I was thinking about this recently, imagine if covid got the Irish to finally give up on the crappy pub as a means to socialise, would be amazing

    Won't happen though

    You never know!
We could have a more continental outlook with more varied social activities than being cooped up in a pub

I had a few pints with relatives in there over the years. A lovely spot.

I couldn't give a continental for continental outlooks.

Horrifyingly obivous, I just took a look there and found this.

THE NERVE! Hilarious. I'm stuck between disbelief and awe.

Whoever is writing these reviews has clearly looked in here.

Not the thread for it, but in some other thread can you be more specific about this might actually look like?

Methinks Paddy is bypassing existentialism in the bistro for something worse than the pubs.

    Don't see it mentioned...

Papa Rich is opening in Athenry in the coming weeks.
Located in the former Keane's/Gill's pub premises. No opening date that I know of but signage went up on the building this week and work is ongoing inside.

Any update on this? Or will it be another Claregalway?

Late last year they were also going into Claregalway (above Supervalu), signage went up and then nothing.

    Thnaks,
    Pa.
