    Not over yet.
We are struggling on our own kickouts.
Any reason we cant go short with even one and keep the ball?

Tracey was folded there but where was he going.

  • Registered Users Posts: 9,597 ✭✭✭Cartman78

Gonna be a long 4 mins.

Seems to be very early in the year for me to be getting so stressed watching Mayo :-)

Poor wide from Meath there...surely we can close it out now

LETS NEVER SPEAK OF THIS AGAIN

Vital win. Ref didn't add much.

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,010 ✭✭✭Euphoriasean

Kev Mc saved the day and potentially our division 1 status. Meath weren't horrendous today and any better team would have beaten us.

  • Registered Users Posts: 6,731 ✭✭✭Fowler87

Wow. Kev McLoughlin... That 2nd half display confirms it. Best player from the 2011-2017 golden generation dies it.

Out of jail. Ryan O Donohue deserves fair credit too. Looked awful naive in the 2nd half. Loftus struggled

Sadly, we could say the same of plenty of the Mayo lads today.

Fair play to Kev, fantastic impact.

Stole that in the end. Worked hard in the last fifteen minutes though, the likes of Ryan O'Donoughe doing a lot of donkey work. Thankfully we had the class of McLoughlin to come off the bench to pull us through.

Plenty of work to be done, Horan made mistakes and needs to learn from it.

We'd have taken it before the game though, especially given the conditions. Priceless win.

I don't know why Horan took off Conroy and Carr. In fairness McLoughlin was the sensible move but maybe for Durcan. But Conroy and Carr (3rd game in a row hooked unfairly IMHO) were at least showing for the ball. Treacy and Loftus were not ready today

Especially in extra time when we were a point up, kicking into the breeze and sun.

Why didnt he go short and we could hold on to it.

    Some man Kevin Mc.

We must have used our quota of get out of jail cards.

Poor day at office even taking account of the conditions.

The way the other results have gone this weekend definitely looks that way

Really hard to fathom as he has good technique in his kick outs. It's more his nerve goes when the pressure is on and he can't get out of the rut

Thought Hennelly done well to get the distance on his kickouts against that breeze. Balls were there to be won and O'Shea dropped a couple that you would expect him to field.

It is all very tight now . Our points difference could be a killer cos other teams will run up bigger scores against Meath.
2 more wins SHOULD do it.......

Why are we talking about Hennelly again? Diarmuid and Coen didn’t catch a ball all day. Menton outjumped O’Connor for the goal & O’Shea dropped it for the second. Thought Hennelly done alright today. The last thing we needed there was a short ball in our defence against that wind

Don’t think he was getting at Hennelly
More the overall tactics from the sideline . If there are any ......

We seem to have one style of kickout for a game and that’s it. It won’t change mid game no matter what
We absolutely needed to retain possession toward the end
We kept kicking it long and losing it so it kept coming back

What would dublin have done ?

Does it not come down to head to head rather than point difference.

Only if there are two teams tied
The way it’s looking there could be 3 or 4

Kev Mc the hero again - he's some man!

I thought Ryan O'Donoghue was excellent in the last 15/20 minutes. Seemed to be everywhere and involved in the vital scores too.

That's a fair of point too. But at the end of the day there were few individuals at fault positionally and management at fault tactically. You could see the pressure building from meath in a few plays before that and how open the Mayo defence were beginning to look. That's why the two speedy Wallace's were introduced. The goal(s) we're inevitable.

We needed to funnel back, compose ourselves and go again. Make the game a bit of a scrap. It's not what we want to see but I'd say only 2/3 so similar games in the recent years where Mayo have prevented this from happening. 2016 when we used the sweeper well and 2017 vs Kerry.

But generally its always been our achilles heel. When pressure is put on the team in critical moments in game (3rd quarter usually) panic sets in and we do tend to fold.

At this stage its right not to criticize anyone - management, players as the one thing that's keeps us competitive is this never say die attitude which is why Mayo are still considered in that top bracket.

Horan's in-game management is non-existent. Watching him on the sideline last year while Dublin over ran us still pains me.

Normally players we talk about missing, but I'd swap 3 or 4 of them to have Donnie Buckley back on the line. Our tackling has been shocking all year, especially poor today.

Defence has been cut wide open a few too many times with relatively pedestrian moves. Wind responsible for a lot of the handling errors, but clearly some (major) issues with the strategy there. A few of the forwards tracking back looking at sea.

Disappointing showings from James D and Ryan so far. Though shot selection right throughout the team looking poor which isn't helping.

A lot to work on for the second half (and rest of the year). Kev Mac's carrying might be very important yet. Fingers crossed.

    Could'nt agree more.

I know there's an inclination for players to lower their heads going into tackles but I've lost count of the number of occasions where players are putting a single hand in to impede a player coming through at pace and same are borderline clothes line tackles around the neck area.

Our quality of tackling IMO has deteriorated since Donie Buckley left.

Our soft centre is oft largely down to us over committing players offensively.
