    Game v Benetton postponed.
The game was due to take place on Saturday, November 7 in Treviso, however, Benetton have reported that three players have returned positive cases of Covid-19 and that four other players identified as close contacts are now isolating.

Having considered all of the available evidence, the PRO14 Rugby Medical Advisory Group has deemed that this fixture cannot go ahead as scheduled.

PRO14 Rugby will examine potential dates in early 2021 to reschedule the game.

If Benetton can't get a squad together to fulfil fixtures soon this could get very messy

The players might be glad of a week off as it's non-stop rugby until and including the New Year.

Good to see James French back training, might ease the pressure at LH along with the loan signing

New SH Ben Murphy training too

More training pictures on the inpho site, but they got a bit confused with some of the names

How was it ever even allowed to go ahead with the cancellation of their game v Connacht the week before. Does the 14 day rule apply to professional players?

Benetton are down 7 players, but could that be in addition to the positives/close contacts from last week I wonder.

I suppose they might have been hoping that returning International players would fill the gaps and allow them fulfill our fixture but it's a very tight line for fixtures once a few players pick up the virus or are close contacts.

The negative of this postponement is still not game time for Daly now and he could be heading back into the Irish camp again shortly

Daly will hopefully play in the Georgia game but he won't have played for three months. It's not ideal.

    Squad update

There is positive news on the injury front for Darren Sweetnam, Rhys Marshall and Dan Goggin.

Sweetnam (knee) and Marshall (thigh) returned to training today with Goggin (shoulder) expected to return to training later in the week.

Unavailable: Chris Cloete (neck), Roman Salanoa (thigh), Jeremy Loughman (shoulder), Liam O’Connor (calf), Niall Scannell (neck), Neil Cronin (knee), Dave Kilcoyne (ankle), RG Snyman (knee), Joey Carbery (ankle).

A guess at the side to play Ospreys, I think they might use this as a chance to rotate players

J.Wycherley, Marshall, Archer, Kleyn, F.Wycherley, JO'D, TO'D, JO'S, McCarthy, Healy, L.Coombes, DDA, McHenry, Nash, Haley

Cronin, KO'B, Knox, Holland, G.Coombes, Casey, JJH, R.Scannell

A chance to rotate? They did that against Dragons and have had a free week. Then there's an 8 day turnaround to the next game in Glasgow. No need to rotate too heavily for this.

  • Registered Users Posts: 45,433 ✭✭✭✭thomond2006

I wouldn't expect as much rotation given the week off. Zebre on Monday 30th at home would be the opportunity to give chances (Ben Murphy and Callum Reid will probably make appearances to give James Cronin and Casey a week off).
Goggin only returning to training later in the week would suggest he won't make this Sunday.

    Cronin, Marshall, Archer, Kleyn, Wycherley, JOD, Hodnett, JOS;
Casey, Healy, Sweetnam, DDA, Scannell, Nash, Gallagher

KOB, Wycherley, Knox, Holland, Coombes, McCarthy, JJH, Haley

Edinburgh beating Cardiff on Monday night was an excellent result for Munster.

Munster are now 7 points clear of both Edinburgh and Cardiff with a game in hand.

At this early stage, Connacht would seem to be our competition for top spot being on 9 points with two games in hand over Edinburgh/Cardiff and one game in hand over Munster.

The conferences have a look already of being fairly well decided, which is a pity only 5 games in.

Second place in Munsters conference is the only one that’s close.

You would like to think our toughest fixture in the next couple of games is Glasgow away who spectacularly imploded against Ulster on Monday night. Any win away nevermind beating them by 25 points would go a long way to wrapping up this conference.

Glasgow struggle during international windows, playing them during such windows is a major advantage.

Has there been any word on players released from the Irish camp for this weekends fixtures?

You would have to think John Ryan would be available to get some game time into him

Some of the stats in the Red Letter of late make for interesting reading:

Mixing with the Big Boys – Craig Casey has the 3rd highest ball carries in the team with 26, only pipped by CJ Stander with 27, and our number one ball carrier is Gavin Coombes with 34.

Craig Casey shares the lead for Most Defenders beaten with 9 alongside Damian de Allende in the Munster stats.

The young trio sustained knocks in different training sessions and will not be available for this weekend’s clash.

Alex McHenry underwent surgery for a thumb injury and will not be available for the coming weeks, while Liam Coombes has sustained a minor hamstring injury.

Unfortunately, it is a longer-term outlook for John Hodnett who sustained an achilles tendon injury. The Academy back row will undergo surgery early next week before commencing his rehabilitation programme.

A fourth player is already self-isolating after returning a positive test result from Monday’s PCR testing. The player remains well, and no other players have been identified as close contacts.

    Rotten luck for John Hodnett.

Any word on a new Head of Athletic Performance?

    Looks like we need one.

I know rugby is a physical sport, but we seem to have a lot of (more serious) injuries on a regular basis.

    Lots compared to who?
Logan is gone maybe 2/3 weeks. I wouldnt worry too much about it as his two assistants are with Munster 4/5 years etc and isnt too much of an issue.

You could make a pretty decent team from the players who are unavailable to Munster this weekend

    Kilcoyne (Inj)
    Loughmam (inj)
    O'Connor (inj)
    N.Scannell (inj)
    Salanoa (inj)
    Ryan (IRL)
    Snyman (inj)
    Beirne (IRL)
    O'Mahony (IRL)
    Hodnett (inj)
    Cloete (inj)
    Stander (IRL)
    Murray (IRL)
    N.Cronin (inj)
    Carbery (inj)
    McHenry (inj)
    Farrell (IRL)
    L. Coombes (inj)
    Earls (IRL)
    Conway (IRL)
    Daly (IRL)

    Plus 1 Covid case

    Round 1

    Sunday, December 13

Munster Rugby v Harlequins, Thomond Park, 5.30pm – BT Sport & beIN Sports

    Round 2

    Saturday, December 19

ASM Clermont Auvergne v Munster Rugby, Parc des Sports Marcel Michelin, 6.30pm – BT Sport & beIN Sports

    Round 3

    Saturday, January 16

Munster Rugby v ASM Clermont Auvergne, Thomond Park, 5.30pm – BT Sport & beIN Sports

    Round 4

    Saturday, January 23

Harlequins v Munster Rugby, Twickenham Stoop, 5.30pm – BT Sport & beIN Sports

All times are local so all 5.30 kick offs. Harlequins at home and Clermont away on same days as All Ireland hurling and football finals.

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,366 ✭✭✭yerrahbah

I guess its the best start we could have hoped for with Quins at home.

If Bristol do a job on Clermont in the first round, they might (hopefully) lose interest

Ah Jaysus, the one year no fans can attend we get no crap early kickoffs. Typical.

  • Registered Users Posts: 8,187 ✭✭✭Dubinusa

Munster should be able to get though Quinn. Clermont is tough but doable.

That hodnett news is a damn shame. Was really looking forward to watching him this year think he could have been a starter by end of the season. Hopefully he does not lose explosiveness
