Hmmm, odd one. Hard to judge with Italy given resources, but they did look good in spells going forward when they managed to piece something together.

So long as Andy Robinson doesn't fetch up to D4 in a fresh green tracksuit I'm happy to give Farrell his head and see what happens in the first 12-18 months.

Welcome Mike and best of luck.

From 2018 and 2019 were two of Italy's highest points scored 6N tournaments since like 2007 and they looked fairly threatening at times.

I agree it's hard to judge what effect he's had in Italy given the way they've performed overall.

I'd imagine Lancaster may have had some input into it or at least a conversation with Catt given their relationship at England.

Catt is a good attack coach, Italy’s attack play has been much more cohesive of late. In previous years they relied on a powerful forward pack to turn possession into points but now they can actually do damage out wide.

I’d be cautiously optimistic with the appointment.

Underwhelmed with Catt. A few months ago I had hoped for Lancaster.
Still thought they would be looking to bring in an experienced coach to help Farrell.
Good he will be at WC to help Joe and for transition. Hopefully he will be able/allowed to tweak Ireland’s ruck heavy possession game.

Edit misread that he would be part of WC team. He will be with Italy at WC!

I think this could work out very well.

Italy’s attack has been very good the last couple of years.

Ireland and the provinces have by and large appointed well over the last ten years - no reason to think they have not done so again.

Ireland and the provinces have achieved more than we could have hoped for in that time

Italy’s attack in the 6N this season was one of the few positives from the team. With a better backline Catt should go well. Though I wonder does this mean we will be moving away from Joe’s more set play based attacking structure.

I find the World Cup stuff pretty tough to decide on because it has the beauty of not having a sponsor on the front but the emblazoned 'RWC 2019' dates it pretty quickly.

Elverey’s are selling off all the stock of the last disgusting jersey for €28 if you want one cheap. Even at that price I wouldn’t wear it.

Senior, women's, 7s and all underage national teams to be based at the Sport Ireland facility in Blanchardstown. Been out there a couple of times and it really is a top class setup. Looking at building a hotel out there also so the Carton House days could be over.

Devin Toner returned to preseason training and will be fit for World Cup.

Just looked at the world cup fixtures

Last game of the group stage is Japan vs Scotland on the 13th Oct at 11.45am. Big possibility it could be 1st/2nd playoff if we lose our first 2 games and the Ireland va Russia/Samoa ones will be joe Smit testamonial games. Main point a win is needed against Scotland or/and Japan

So if Ireland lose to both of their main rivals in the group they are probably out. Someone should tell Joe.

Not feeling super confident. Japan and Scotland will actually fancy their chances.
