Russian Doll stars Natasha Lyonne and starts on February 1st on Netflix. Looks like a very adult Groundhog Day/Happy Death Day, and looks darkly funny. Hope it's good! I love anything with a clever time loop. :)

Happy Death Day was so disappointing, but this looks pretty great.

And for those who care about these things (Such as me, cos it pretty much got me watching the trailer), it comes from the mind of Amy Poehler.

Thought it was a remake of Belgian series Matrioshki

which was available on Sky Arts replay at one stage

    looks good anyhow

[JOE] Netflix's new comedy is already being called one of the best shows of 2019
^^^ Click bait title? Hoping it doesn't disappoint.
Co-created by Amy Poehler (Parks & Rec, Sisters), Netflix's new comedy is a high-concept mix of Groundhog Day and Happy Death Day.

Russian Doll stars Natasha Lyonne (Orange Is The New Black, American Pie) as a woman trying to escape a party that is being thrown in her honour, but upon leaving, she is killed in a car accident, and then wakes up... back at the party.

Over and over, she is killed and killed again, and each and every time she winds up back in the middle of the party she is trying to escape.

^^^ Liked the actress in OITNB.

Refuse to click into JOE.ie and give it reward for a clickbait strategy, but does the article even pretend to give examples of how it's "being called"?

it looks good and very funny but youd have to wonder how many times her dying will be funny.
also how can they stretch something like this out for a number of seasons.then again im not a writer so what the hell do i know.

    Thanks corkie.

As to the comment about 3 seasons, I suspect there's more to the Groundhog Day deaths than just gallows humour; wonder if it expands out into some broader mystery...

    Anyone start watching it yet?

Been catching up on other shows aired last night. STD, Orvile, TBBT and YS.

5 episodes in, like it so far. Not hilarious but very clever.

Less than half an hour an episode! Actually on the 6th :) Glue sniffing ftw.*

*That'll probably make more sense when you've watched, plus can't beat some good evostick.

Yeah, I enjoyed it too, one of the best Netflix original series I've watched. Re the tune, I thought it was irritatingly present early on(but used for good reason) but really didn't notice it much after that.

This was alright...it was okay. Don't really get the overwhelmingly glowing reviews, it wasn't anything super special.

Really tired of Natasha Lyonne's schtick, even before Orange Is The New Black...her voice, her mannerisms, her whole gimmick...she's like a cross between Danny DeVito and Whoopi Goldberg.

I watched 2 and a half episodes and thought it was shít. The main woman's accent was all over the place too.

Binged this over the weekend. Loved it. the humour was good, when it was creepy it was done very well, and importantly, for a show with a premise like this, it nailed the landing.

Anyone else get the feeling that they would have cast Carrie Fisher in the role of Ruth if she was still alive?

Genuinely thought it was Carrie Fisher for half a second!

Loved this. Great show, and it demands a rewatch. Looking forward to going through a second time.

An interesting show and felt like Natasha Lyonne was two different people. Drama/half comedy.

4 episodes in, loving it, the script is bang on.

I love Natasha anyway, but her acting is top notch.

Can't wait to see the rest.

She really overdoes the whole Jewish thing. I know she is actually Jewish but still.

She's Jewish, from New York. She's pretty much playing herself in this, even some of the character's backstory matches hers.

How can someone overdo playing herself?

Thought she did a great job of making the character sympathetic, after being far from it early on.

Thought it was brilliant and just read they pitched 3 seasons to Netflix. No idea where session 2 could go but I'll watch the **** out of it.

I can see why some might have not have taken an initial shine here: the characters in episode 1 are achingly ... "Bohemian New Yorkers". I think though that's the point & are meant to laugh a little at their eccentricities.

Me’h, same scenario repeated. Could have been condensed. Only watched it for Lyonne.

Thought it was unwatchable. Switched off after 3 episodes.

Binged it and really enjoyed it, I'm glad they brought in the "second" character of Alan, I thought the chemistry between the two was very well done.

I tried to stick with it too but couldn't, just hated all the characters.

Wow, interesting to see how people's opinions differ. Horses for courses I suppose...

I thought this was fantastic! Unnerving & dark at the beginning with plenty humour thrown in for good measure. Also didn't know how it was going to pan out throughout the series but ended well. Can't imagine how the next seasons will work though.

Main actress was excellent imo, the NY Jewish thing was definitely played up but her performance wasn't any the worse for it. Highly recommended!

Really wasn't sure after the first episode but I decided to stick with it. 6 episodes in now and I'm loving it :) Will finish it tomorrow and looking forward to seeing what happens.

I abandoned it halfway through the second one. Found her very annoying and really didn't care at that point why it had all happened.

Just finished this now.... t’was pretty good imo.
While I wouldn’t say it was one of the best show I’ve seen, i found it entertaining all the same. The premise was quite clever - I felt the storyline sucked me in right until the very end. The fact that there were only 8 episodes and said episodes were short in duration was a major positive - very easy to binge watch! :p
Although the creepy scenes whereby she kept seeing herself as child kinda freaked me out a bit.....
, for the most part it was an easy watch.

Did the constant reoccurrence of the Harry Nielsen song remind anyone else of the constant repetition of Sonny and Chers’ “I got you babe” in Groundhog Day? :pac:

I enjoyed the first season but not really sure where they go from there. Doesn't naturally lend itself to further storylines imo. But they have said it was a three season pitch initially so who knows.

Said it in the Netflix thread on Film forum but I don't see where this story can go; both characters found their peace, their story felt complete insofar as the arcs presented to us.

Maybe they're going to follow some other characters? The cast was quite the menagerie, and even the side-characters felt like they had a lot going on - so maybe it'll be their turn to get trapped in the time loop.

Whaaaat!? I'm really looking forward to the next season, where both (or newer) characters try and find out wtf is going on !smile.png
I think the imagination behind it can easily extend the search for answers.
I didn't think I was going to enjoy this series much- playing with time-loop, how easily Lyonne's character died (stairs?)- but despite this, left hungry for more.

Any release date? Or has the second series even been filmed?

Production just got underway last week
    https://tvline.com/2021/03/09/annie-murphy-russian-doll-season-2-cast-netflix/

Whether that means filming or all the stuff before filming, I don't know.
Probably be next year now before we see it. Though the first season was short with short episodes so possibly could get it this year
