Should we stop buying from companies based in the North who have Unionist leadership?

I have no problem with buying from British companies as well as Irish companies. Britain is a fantastic place with fantastic people. However, particularly with Brexit on the horizon and the actions of the DUP, should Irish people refuse to buy goods and services from companies in the North which have Unionist management and shareholders?

What’s wrong with the actions of the DUP?

If you refuse to buy products from countries who have different ethos, values and opinions to ourselves, what will be be left with to purchase?

As a starting point, they're acting in their own interest rather than working to achieve what the majority of the people in the North voted for, i.e. the people that they're supposed to represent.

Sounds like fairly normal party politics really!

How do you find out if they're Unionist, do you ring and ask?

Excuse me, but I was about to buy a carton of your milk in Lidl, but if you're a unionist you can fűck right off.

Very easy to find out tbh. I know of plenty of businesses that are dropping suppliers from the North in favour of continental Europe.

Risk management and stability. Nobody knows what will happen regarding Brexit but if you shift your supply chain it's less of a concern.

No. We should boycott the air they breathe.

Put them under economic pressure, Jack.

All a bit Kristallnachty , OP. As much as I'm dismayed by the stance of the DUP, boycotting Unionist products and services en masse is not a constructive way to go. I mean, not all people who class themselves as Unionist agree with the DUP stance in the first place. We need to maintain links and keep channels of communication open. The kind of action you're proposing is the type of thing that can create a tinderbox situation. You really want that for anyone?

You're aware OP that business and farming organisations in the North are all opposed to the DUP line on Brexit?

I think that's a good idea. Maybe let's go one further and only watch the non-unionist members of the Irish rugby team.
We can't have people with different political viewpoints around, that would be democratic or something.

We should give our business to people who value our custom.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 761 ✭✭✭Vita nova

Definitely not. It would be perceived by some as motivated by sectarianism and nationalism and would do far more damage than good.

Its a strong entry to be fair, like time poor Freddie passed on late November and Bohemian Rhapsody vied for best selling single of 1991.

Why unionist businesses? Why not businesses that contribute to fg or ff instead?

I have no problem with people having different viewpoints, although judging by some of the responses on here, there are a minority of people who want to shout down the viewpoint that I've put forward.

By continuing to abstain, sinn Fein are operating in the DUP's own interest on Brexit too.........

On the day after st Stephen's day I needed a part for my car, all local car parts shops were closed and I needed it in a hurry. A shop in Cookstown was open, I went up, got part, back on the road within a few hours.
I cannot tell you their politics, religion or beliefs. I can tell you they were friendly, knowledgeable and most importantly they were OPEN. as for the rest, who cares?

People are shouting down your viewpoint because your viewpoint is silly and nonsensical.

The National Transport Authority spends tens of millions of Euro every year on buses from Wrightbus - a northern company with a history of not employing Catholics, and whose owner is a vocal Brexit and DUP supporter. In addition to this, the company's products are vastly inferior to those available elsewhere.

But do some research before taking the word of someone on the internet. The company is in Ballymena. If it was in Crossmaglen, I think the workforce would be all Catholic.

Tbh it's the inferior busses I'd be more concerned about rather than petulant nationalism

If Brexit goes ahead 'hard', then that decision will be made for you OP.

A Hard Brexit = the biggest act of self harm since those lemmings spotted that cliff edge.

No, that plays directly into their hands. The DUP need stuff like this to warrant their existence. It's the Trump playbook, "Look at them over there, hate them, they're the cause of all our problems" They WANT to see a fall off in trade with the south. They WANT to see tariffs, barriers, and restrictions across the border, anything that moves NI further away from RoI. Odious cúnts.

The DUP have done more for the cause of a United Ireland than any body or organisation I can think of.

For that I'll be eternally grateful. I'm lifting a virtual glass of Bushmills in their honour. Sláinte!
