The AH 8th amendment exit poll had 81% in favour of repealing the 8th. The actual result was 66% in favour.

Agreed the President of Ireland has relatively few powers and can't enact change. However how is my vote for Casey a vote given away? I haven't said that a vote for any of the other candidates is given away.

Well you have a vote. And that vote is valuable. You give it away to one candidate. Whoever that is. The point was if you choose to give it away based on a soundbyte.

People can make mistakes and vote for someone who turns out to be a gobshite or useless. Maybe your man Casey would be a great President but I have not seen any evidence or record of it. He set up a recruitment company and was on the telly. I think he is against neutrality. Apart form that, what is there?

Michael D - poet and public servant. Fluent Irish speaker and has a record of representing the country.

Ni Riada - daughter of a famous musician. Fluent in Irish. Represents Ireland in European Parliament. I usually steer away SF but can understand there are reasons for some people voting for her

Freeman - Set up Pieta House to try to help the big issue of suicide in Ireland. I think became a senator on the back of that.

Gallagher - Some FF roots from what I recall. Famous for being on the telly and for getting shafted by Pat Kenny in the last election. Not sure of any record of public service.

Casey/Duffy. Haven't really a clue of what public service they have ever done. No evidence.

There are three "businessmen" in the list. If you had a business and you wanted someone to run it, on a fixed 7 year contract, would you pick one of the three candidates who have some semblance of experience, or one of the three that have no evidence of it?

From what I saw of the debates he seemed to be the only one who realised that Ireland wasn’t neutral, just non-aligned.

I think my Mam is paranoid there will be an EU army with conscription. Can't see it happening.

And I cast that vote of mine based on my own decision following a review of the campaign led by each of the 6 candidates.

Freeman - Knows nothing other than mental health and is better suited to the Seanad where she can actually effect change on a topic she is obviously quite passionate about.

Ni Riada - showed Sinn Fein's true colours when she revealed the gross/net pay situation.

Gallagher - wouldn't trust him after 2011 and didn't feel he redeemed himself at all in this campaign.

Duffy - didn't offer much substance.

Higgins - seemed tired, didn't have the courage or class to attend 2 of the 4 televised debates, got a very soft line of questioning from David McCullagh on the recent RTE debate, and I'm suspicious of what is going to appear in his unvouched 317k expenses when or if he eventually publishes them.

Casey - had the balls to speak out on a number of issues that most people in the public eye wouldn't dare discuss for fear of being torn apart by our mainstream media. Represents a right leaving view on economics but a left view on social issues such as 8th, gay marriage, and would be more than capable of attending functions and games at Croke Park.

The ability to speak Irish doesn't even enter the requirements to be President. I'd be curious if 95% of the country could fully understand the exchanges between Higgins and Ni Riada as Gaeilge on RTE on Wednesday.

With the turnout so low it could well happen, casey vote is a protest vote and they are more motivated that the MDH camp that thinks its all sown up

Sinn Fein usually dominate online polls not looking good for them, all very quiet. They'll be pissed to spend big money and not get the deposit back.

Look, that's a reasoned thought process. I can understand your views whether i agree or not.

I would imagine that Casey's view on "Economics" is driven by the fact that he is an apparently wealthy man who would prefer to keep as much of that wealth as possible. It's a typical view of people in the US (where he lived and made money) who have a lot of money. Their motivation is not to help those in the lower rungs or those in the middle. It's to keep what they have themselves when they already have more than enough

My perception is that Casey made some off-the-cuff remarks without thinking about them. Then got painted as "X" and had a choice of whether to pull out, apologise and stay in the race, or double down and go for broke. He just took the third.

Did they spend a gross or net amount?

    No sympathy for them.

Completely understand and agree that he is not in any position to help the lower or middle classes, but he might at least shine a spotlight on issues that Michael D would never discuss.

I'd love to hear his thoughts on Margaret Cash.

    Literacy standards really have dropped.

Brought my mother to the polling station and she voted Michael D #1 and Casey #2 because she hates travelers and for no other reason. She also hates Muslims, gays, blacks, Indians, foreigners in general so there ya go. Glad that's what were voting based on.

I will rewrite it slightly for you:

She voted MDH #1. She voted Casey #2 because she hates travelers and for no other reason. She also hates Muslims, gays, blacks, Indians, foreigners in general so there ya go.

Is that any clearer for you?

I know this is probably a joke, but if it isn't you spoiled your vote.

Hey, I'm just calling it like it is. We're all entitled to our opinions.

If you want to call Casey voters uneducated bigots and racists, that's up to you. I didn't say that.

Indeed we are entitled to our opinions, but some of us can express them without displaying a sense of effortless - and quite likely undeserved - superiority, or posting 'witty' ripostes to showcase our apparently immense intellect.

As a man in his 30s/40s (I'm presuming), it's perhaps time to move on from twisting others' words for 'hilarious' effect. And, if I'm correct, YOU were the one lamenting the apparent absence of what you termed "serious debate", no?

MDH will win on the back of the urban vote but PC will come 2nd on the back of a strong rural vote.

And a lot of people I know will be richer given the generous 2nd place odds last week. Party time!!

Usually yes. But in this case there's one "seat", and Higgins will either win or be the last one eliminated. Either way, there will be no transfer [from Higgins].
