People can make mistakes and vote for someone who turns out to be a gobshite or useless. Maybe your man Casey would be a great President but I have not seen any evidence or record of it. He set up a recruitment company and was on the telly. I think he is against neutrality. Apart form that, what is there? Michael D - poet and public servant. Fluent Irish speaker and has a record of representing the country. Ni Riada - daughter of a famous musician. Fluent in Irish. Represents Ireland in European Parliament. I usually steer away SF but can understand there are reasons for some people voting for her Freeman - Set up Pieta House to try to help the big issue of suicide in Ireland. I think became a senator on the back of that. Gallagher - Some FF roots from what I recall. Famous for being on the telly and for getting shafted by Pat Kenny in the last election. Not sure of any record of public service. Casey/Duffy. Haven't really a clue of what public service they have ever done. No evidence. There are three "businessmen" in the list. If you had a business and you wanted someone to run it, on a fixed 7 year contract, would you pick one of the three candidates who have some semblance of experience, or one of the three that have no evidence of it?

Freeman - Knows nothing other than mental health and is better suited to the Seanad where she can actually effect change on a topic she is obviously quite passionate about. Ni Riada - showed Sinn Fein's true colours when she revealed the gross/net pay situation. Gallagher - wouldn't trust him after 2011 and didn't feel he redeemed himself at all in this campaign. Duffy - didn't offer much substance. Higgins - seemed tired, didn't have the courage or class to attend 2 of the 4 televised debates, got a very soft line of questioning from David McCullagh on the recent RTE debate, and I'm suspicious of what is going to appear in his unvouched 317k expenses when or if he eventually publishes them. Casey - had the balls to speak out on a number of issues that most people in the public eye wouldn't dare discuss for fear of being torn apart by our mainstream media. Represents a right leaving view on economics but a left view on social issues such as 8th, gay marriage, and would be more than capable of attending functions and games at Croke Park. The ability to speak Irish doesn't even enter the requirements to be President. I'd be curious if 95% of the country could fully understand the exchanges between Higgins and Ni Riada as Gaeilge on RTE on Wednesday.
Donald Trump wrote: » Look, that's a reasoned thought process. I can understand your views whether i agree or not. I would imagine that Casey's view on "Economics" is driven by the fact that he is an apparently wealthy man who would prefer to keep as much of that wealth as possible. It's a typical view of people in the US (where he lived and made money) who have a lot of money. Their motivation is not to help those in the lower rungs or those in the middle. It's to keep what they have themselves when they already have more than enough

Brought my mother to the polling station and she voted Michael D #1 and Casey #2 because she hates travelers and for no other reason. She also hates Muslims, gays, blacks, Indians, foreigners in general so there ya go. Glad that's what were voting based on.

And a lot of people I know will be richer given the generous 2nd place odds last week. Party time!!
