Slightly early but seeing all the confirmed qualifiers starting to pop up on my FB feed so said it's about time:D

See Seigo Asada has qualified today and Kevin Burness from the Tom Kirby the other day.

Also see that Paul Lim is in line to come back after his showing last year!

Is there no preliminary round games this year?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 39,693 ✭✭✭✭KevIRL

To answer my own question, a new format with 96 entrants. Top 32 in the world enter at round 2

That format sets up a few banana skins in that the lesser fancied players will have a game under their belt when the seeded players are going in cold, so to speak!

Dunno if that's gonna be more of a headwreck for me or for you guys wrt Fantasy World Champs but it sure means some things are gonna change :pac:
A bit early yet but drop me a PM if you guys have any suggestions on format for the Fantasy gig rather than clutter up this thread :)

nearly impossible not to qualify these days

No suprise really Lisa Ashton joins Anatasia and qualified today losing only 2 legs all day. Not sure why there is separate women's qualifiers for a mixed event. Women have to go through q school to get a tourcard.

Draw is this evening but if the seedings get through their rounds I *think* we are looking at a last 32 of

    MVG/Hopp v A. Lewis/Barney
    Whitlock/Norris v Wade/Klaasen

    G. Anderson/Wattimena v Webster/Beaton
    Gurney/J. Lewis v Chisnall/Huybrechts

    Cross/Reyes v Clayton/Bunting
    Suljovic/Wilson v Smith/Henderson

    Wright/BvdP v Cullen/King
    Price/K. Anderson v White/West

Bottom half the place to be again

100% record against Taylor in all their televised matches I think.
May just be him and Rob Cross who have that.

Bottom half of the draw is very open, will be a few players fancying their chances of making the semis at least.

Would still be expecting MVG and Anderson make the semis in the top half.

How is the schedule being done - Is the first round completed before the second round is started, or do they intermingle them at an early stage?
If its the former then its not great viewing really, presuming 8 sessions of 4 games then there'll be some very low profile sessions.

strange way to display the draw bracket that way.

The draw is fixed seed wise for No.1 to play No.4 and No.2 to play No.3 in the semi's should they get there.

Will Hill need to swap Q3 out of the picture there.

Taylor/Anderson and Lewis/Anderson are the only decent ones i can remember since 07. Some absolute dross in that period too like Shepherd/Part and Hamilton/Lewis, the rest all fade to memory apart from last year.

2013 final, MvGs first, he went 2-0 an 4-2 up only for Taylor to win 5 consecutive sets. Alot of those sets went down to a last leg decider. That's why I love set play the over all score could be lopsided but the match could be full of drama.

Gonna be tricky to see too many upsets from the top 32 round 2 matches up till the evening session of 19th Dec as they will be playing someone who has already gone through a match that evening

Edit - just noticed. This only applies to Cross on the first night.

De zwaan having to play two matches on the first night a big advantage to Cross though

Whoever gets through doesn't play again for TEN days. That's mad.

The schedule is a bit mad. Having someone play two long matches on the same day is a massive disadvantage. Surely they could have organised it a bit better.

Only happens the once though, is that right? To avoid it completely they would have needed to have just first round matches on the opening night which would have been a fairly low key way to kick things off.

Do agree it's a huge disadvantage though

Nicholson has to play twice in the same day, although afternoon and evening session. That may be the only other one but it is a disadvantage and shouldn't happen at a World Championships. It should be a an equal playing field for all. In fairness I haven't seen the players complain though.
