What are the tests like? Would they be anything like the ones for the ESB grad programme?

They look handy out. Are the real ones the same or more difficult?

The practice ones more demonstrate style of question as opposed to the difficulty. They will be more difficult than the practice ones

They usually are very similar to practice tests.

I found out by pure accident that there was info out about the tests. My friend got a notification around 12 by text but i'm only signed up for email notifications and still haven't gotten anything. The message is on the message board.

AFAIK everyone who submitted an application properly gets to do the online tests, shortlisting only begins after the online tests.

    Good luck everyone!

I could do the verbal reasoning a 100 times and score differently each time.

That practice test is considerably easier then any of the other numerical tests I've done via pas, either practice or actual.

Maybe they're moving to make them easier?
Either that or the practice is deceptively easy.

Is there a separate set of tests for the Revenue AO competition and Local Government roles or is it a shared set of scores?

  • Registered Users Posts: 240 ✭✭Pai Mei

It states on the first page of the info booklet that "You can also expect the actual tests to be more difficult than the practice tests". So yeah the test itself will be more difficult.

Don't know about LG but revenue tests are separate from PAS so if you applied for both you will need to do two sets of tests.

For "upper band" in the practice tests anyway tend toward accepting personal responsibility in the scenarios with deferral to managers where appropriate. Doesn't give a raw score so "upper" could be >50 , >70, or barely scraping over the arbitrary marker, who knows. Will do the real one tomorrow probably.

They are not the same - AO civil service and AO local government are different jobs. AO Local government is a section head, so you could be the AO for Roads, Environment, Housing etc. and have responsibility for budgets and staff, etc in that section. AO in lg are much better paid for starters, gets 30 days leave and it is a middle management role which requires years of management experience. It's not a graduate entry role. It is a Grade 7 - sometimes AOs are not general management and do specialised roles without being a section head, eg a Senior Researcher or Special Projects Manager, etc.

Local authorities recruit separately for an external/open AO panel. So much like civil service it's a detailed application form, competency-based questions, then shortlisting on basis of that, then call for competency based interview. There is no aptitude/psychometric testing.

Wasnt too bad. Verbal was grand, got all complete. Numerical wasn't "hard" but the time allocated to solve problem, locate info and then compute numbers was pretty short, need to engage robot gear for that one. The Assessment, well who knows, they could be all wrong sure. Hope for the best anyway.

Can you do the three components separately i.e. questionnaire one day, verbal another and numerical another?

There's 2 separate links anyway for verbal+numerical and then the questionnaire is elsewhere. Wouldn't see why not, as long as completed within the timeframe.

So no logical test like on the practice tests?
