I remember being on a plane in the 80s where people could smoke. We also didn't have a telephone in our first house, and I think we left there in 1987. There were loads of bees, we used to catch them in jars, way more than we have now. And no fat people.

Re fat people, my father had a saying:

You see plenty of fat men, and plenty of old men, but you don't see plenty of fat old men.

    Not your ornery onager

The 80.s was great. No global warming. No one staring at phones. No one Getting bullied on social media
Great music. Mtv. Lots of record stores and bookshops
Society was more equal. If you had a job you could buy a y buy a house. Rents were low. Pirate radio stations
Played pop music before 2fm. We had cable tv
Put up an aerial watch BBC and itv. The Internet was not invented yet. you don.t miss what u do.nt have
Are young people better off now paying high rent
Trying to save for a deposit. It takes 2people now to buy a house

What was it like in the 1980's in Ireland?

I have seen pictures, video and my god it looked like a depressing place.

    Grey, delapidated, hopeless.

What was it like? How did you get by without internets, wheelie bins, toilets...?

Would you go back if you could??

*Might as well throw in the 70's too for people of that vintage.

I hear the muffs was hairy

Grew up in the Bogside in the 80's. Was colourful, but not in the literal sense.

1/10 would not go back. Except for maybe a knockout tournament with jumpers in the middle of the road.

And finishing up with Mart and Market presented by Baldylocks, as we knew him better as.

    TV in 1980.

    Jesus. They repeated Garda Patrol!

RTE2 only started at 7pm and was only on until 11:20

    Some awful dire stuff there.

Landmark - half an hour talking about sh!te, literally!

Fingal County Council are certainly not competent to be making decisions about the most important piece of infrastructure on the island. They need to stick to badly designed cycle lanes and deciding on whether Mrs Murphy can have her kitchen extension.

    TV in 1980.

The Francis Durbridge Mysteries are superb - serious plot twists. Bought both R4 DVD sets.

'To the waters and the Wild' with Gerret Van Gelderen was a great programme.

And the ratings list on the side of the RTE2 programmes in the link was interesting as well.

Fantastic. I still remember the puffins.

RTE done some amazing low budget stuff in the day.

    Hands, for example.

Even Bosco, with the Magic Door.

Inexpensive, but great stuff. To my child's mind anyway.

Oh, Christ. I remember one particularly bad one in May 1985. I was pregnant with twins and lost one. My mother blamed a particularly bad thunder storm, even though it was nearly two months later that I realised that something was wrong!
