Looking to get a mod for my .308, Ive been looking at Wildcat, Ase, Hausken and DPT.
Would anybody reccommend any of the above brands, or models from them? Also besides a reduction in overall length, is there any advantage to an over barrel mod?

I've a Wildcat Evolution Moderator on my 6.5x55, no issues although at the range the weekend the heat coming off it was causing mirage(me thinks). Couldn't figure what was happening for ages but after 5/6 rounds downrange could literally see the heat waves on the target. Been new to the world of mods I'm guessing this was the case. Someone with more experience might chime in bit the Wildcat in general is fine and modular so easy to clean...

Two years ago Calibre Magazine had compared moderators. The Hausken JD224 had the best noise reduction vs weight. I have 3 of the and they seem to work well. Only thing with Hausken, if you notice bad grouping or flyers with a Hausken then the cause might be that the baffle holes are generally on the tight side. I use a 243 on the 223 and bored out the 30 cal mods by almost 0.5mm.

I have a Wildcat Predator 8 on my 308. Use it on my 223 as well.

I'd recommend it highly. Easy to break down and clean. Very good at reducing recoil on the 308. Noticably tightens up my groups on the 223. And very little shift of POI on either rifle. I guess my only gripe would be, as mods go, it is a little heavy.

Im in the same boat im thinking about getting a Sonic 45 mod for my 308 because im set to make a racket on saturday morning(hopefully:P)
My father has a wildcat mod on his rifle and i quite like the look of it
Is there any major disadvantage to sealed moderators  how do you clean them properly??

Oh sorry im thinking rimfire moderators tend to get filthy, id hazard a guess that a centrefire just blows all of the carbon etc out anyway?+no unburnt powder
Also if it ever happens that im crossing a ditch, stream, river what ever and i slip and the rifle takes a nosedive into dirt, and the mod get filled with sh*te itd be handy to have a removable baffle stack for easy cleaning.I know its very unlikely to happen and ive never done it personally but ive seen shotgun barrels filled like this

Use a condom over the mod or shotgun barrel . Keeps everything clean in the event of a slip.

Have a stalon on my .243 and find it great. Comes apart for cleaning too, sound reduction is great and i dont notice it on the gun really. Much prefer it to my old T8

I've had atec, T8 and a Hausken JD224 and I'd recommend the Hausken. I'd also recommend paying close attention to what edi says above. I had to drill the baffles on mine too but I was being a bit ambitious in the first place with how tight the mod was

Unless it is some kind of sealed unit in stainless steel.you do need to clean the silencer. They gather up a huge amount of burnt powder residue[obviously] and in that there are corrosive chemicals and moisture. If that gets into your threads on your barrel,or the silencer itself, if it is a disassemble model, you could be looking at some strap wrench time,or using the missus 'es chip pan to heat up the end of the barrel,or the can itself in chip oil to get it to come off. Only then to discover that your threads and muzzle crown are damaged from corrosion..:(
You can make this job a bit easier, by running your can "Wet".IE having the internals wet with oil. Not dripping wet, but a good sheen of oil on the inside.it seems to stop the powder residue from baking onto the parts,as well as making the can a bit quieter.Your mileage may vary on that depending on which can you use.

Cleaning ,read instructions on recommended procedures for your particular model.I just disassemble entirely, throw it all in a basin of petrol, and leave a few hours. Scrub all threads and carbon deposits with a toothbrush, let it air dry and oil and reassemble.

Do you use the Hausken for hunting or tsrget shooting or both? How does it handle the heat? Does it give mirage problems?

I use it for a bit of both. All mods will cause mirage issues to some extent or another. Some people use covers (or tape) to mitigate the mirage while shooting and then pull them off after their string to let the moderator cool. Could be an option for you.

I was going to start a new thread, but came across this one.

After the few years since this original post, what are people using now / how have the moderators above held up?

My moderator appears to have a pin hole in it (looks like something came out the side of it) and so im thinking it's time to get another.

Anyone got any recommendations for a 308 stalking setup?

A lot of places seem to be stocking RRC.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 258 ✭✭Rifter

Seeing as I started this thread, it was actually a while after I asked that I ended up picking up a Mod.

I went with the RCC M48, I find it good, I use mine for deer stalking aswell

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 312 ✭✭keith s

    Thanks Rifter,

I picked up same (RRC M48) for the 243 on Saturday. It's a good bit heavier than the Hausken, but seems OK, I put 7 rounds down to zero and check group on the 243.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 564 ✭✭✭Sika98k

Bet thats a Hausken. They all seem to rot in the same place. Aluminium although it’s light is going to wear out eventually.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 312 ✭✭keith s

    You're spot on.

In fairness, I got it 2nd hand and although it was spotless (on the outside) I've no idea how many rounds went down it before I got it. And I've had it about 2 years.

It has the wire wool between the baffles.

I'm going to try open it, just to see if I can spot what went wrong.

For now I'm on the lookout for a new light weight replacement. OR.... maybe I will see how I get on without one. as I want to keep the rig light as a stalking rig 🤔

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 564 ✭✭✭Sika98k

Both of mine have the wire wool in between the baffles. It does further suppress the sound. The 22/250 is the one more used and has the hole. Just have to accept that they are consumables.
Or you go down the route of an ASE stainless or similar.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 312 ✭✭keith s

And do you use it with the hole in it?

I was unsure to keep using it or not.

I see Wildcat have x3 versions of the new Elite (mental money) one of them is Titanium. Any thoughts on these?

Ardee have 2 models in stock

I am using dpt overbarrel moderators with the stainless baffle on my 308 And 204 for the last few years .

They are holding up well with little signs of wear.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 312 ✭✭keith s

I was looking at them (seen mention of them in previous posts here) but couldn't find any stockists, at lease nothing jumped out at me in a google search.

    I got mine in N ireland .

Patrick carley in wexford used to sell them but don't know if he still does.

VITAL that you clean the Mod. As when you fire off a round, there are all sorts of harmful and corrosive gases formed in the powder burn, like Ammonia that will start working on the insides of the Mod in no time at all.Inc water vapour which will form due to the heat of the round and our generally moist climates atmosphere.

There are enough posts here of lads looking for advice on how to remove stuck mods from their rifles, because on neglecting to remove and clean their Mods and following up looking for advice on dealing with damaged barrel crowns and rusty bores.

It's why I prefer take down models like the Danish Nielsen, and who have superb after sales service as well.Replaced for me gratis a damaged baffle from a bullet strike,as it was so unusual for them to actually see one on their products. If it was a sealed can,it would be proably junk from the bullet strike.

Matter of personal choice, but I've never been convinced by the sealed can"never needs cleaning" concept for us civvies. It seems more like somthing that can take a high rate of fire, and then you get issued a new one when your mission is over or you have melted it off the barrel of your LMG or whatever,so it doesn't need cleaning at all.Just replacing at the taxpayers expense.

I would recommend a Stalon, have one on my 243 now and had anohter one on my 223 before that. Excellent moderator, easy to clean and sound reduction is excellent.

ASE UTRA SL5 for all bolt guns, the best. Had them over 15 years and + 10,000 rounds through one.

Ive even had the threads changed on one and gave it as a gift to a friend who needed one. (Cost inc shipping was about 50 euro, to Scotland to the gunsmith who services them)

Buy once and from getting my first one with the rifle I bought in 2010 its been excellent

Keeps excellent groups at all ranges. I use a sonic cleaner and Silencer cleaning fluid on all my Mods and never have an issue.

I had a wildcat moderator exploded yesterday, the front part is missing.

    Baffle is chipped.

No I have to get part's and Ardee are the only ones.

So I'm thinking of a Housken with mesh, €400 Tom Murray fire arms dealer

That sounds like a very bad baffle strike.

How're the threads on the rifle afterwards?

I’ve two wildcat evolutions in 30 cal. But same thing happened a friend of mine twice with a 243 evolution. Replaced by dealer twice.
