Why aren't ye playing off the White tees, ya big girls blouses??

couldn't agree more, we should be off the back back back sticks :D

I taught we were off the white being Captain's! Is that not always the case?

It doesn't need to be a slog-fest especially if the winds are up. The trickery around the greens and that fabulous closing stretch will be a fair test for all of us.

Considering there is only 170yds in the difference. Im not really sure what the big deal is. Should be similar test from both tees i would have thought?

To be fair........I've played the course twice in the ACC and the weather was tough the first year and very benign the second year. I don't recall the lenght of the course being the problem as you tend to get good runs with drives on the fairways. Around the greens however you need that bit of luck with some bounces and of course the elusive knack of using a putter from some dips and hollows.

Its a great course and it will test your game no doubt.

3 games in the year ;)

luckily myself and roadrunner have our 2 already so captains will give us the 3 we need

Yeah, I'm paid up, but only played one other event this year prior to Captains...unless we get to include the start of year Dubs vs Culchies as a qualifier, then I'd hit the 3, including Captains ;)

Sounds like there'll be as much competition for the Visitors prize as there is for the Captains

..and I'd be doing significantly better on the GOTY table :)

Here's a sneak preview to the new website (not launched yet so don't tell!)
    https://www.teeitupmarketing.com/9177134/courses/course-guides/

1st: fairway is narrower than it looks, drive down left, esp if pin is tucked behind bunker on RHS
2nd: Aim for top of bunker you can just see in distance on LHS with 3 iron or 5 wood. Much easier approach from there than anything middle/ RHS of fairway (or worse: over wall is OB)
3rd: Unless it's with the wind, a driver won't run out of fairway. 2nd shot over the road near 1st approach bunker on RHS is a good approach spot (it's tight enough entrance to green)
4th: Long or left are good misses, short or right is v difficult up & down. Green slopes right to left and can leave some very tricky putts
5th: Driver long and hug LHS of fairway gives best approach. Hidden dip short of green with bunkers: beware.
6th: toughest driving hole for me. Fairway slopes slightly left to right (with prevailing wind) so either a draw or a sensible shot on left edge of bunkers. You won't carry 3rd bunker off tee unless there's a gale behind you. Don't miss the green on the left (dead).
7th: Long and left is good off the tee (bunker on left is long and catches many a well struck teeshot though). Middle/ LHS of green is the only 2nd shot: do not go for pin if it's on RHS
8th: Into the wind, aim for 13th tee in distance (middle of fairway), no wind you can aim for green shed or longer hitters can aim for toilet (wooden chalet). 2nd appears shorter than it is and there's a hidden bunker short mid-right of green
9th: Don't miss right or front bunker. Take a selfie at the sign at the back of the green for your mates and tweet it please!
10th: RHS of fairway will get a good kick on for normal drive. Long hitters can take it down the left for a better look at green but you have to carry gully/ depression just past bunker on LHS. 2nd don't miss left, plenty of room on right
11th: long hitters should start drive just right of bunker on LHS: if you get it on top of hill, approach is way easier. Miss right or long right is dead. Always aim for left edge of green, forget about pin. Anything bouncing short will usually end up in bunker short right, tough up & down
12th: Big hitters should take on the bunker on LHS of fairway (unless it's into a good breeze). Lighthouse is a good line for 2nd shot. If you're short of the bunker, get someone to walk on a little to ball spot as it can be very deceptive.
13th: middle of green, usually same club as 9th (even though it's longer)
14th: Ideal spot is between between bridge and left bend in river. Be careful not to run out of fairway (big hit with no wind). False front on LHS of green leading to bunker. A miss slightly right will normally come back on to green.
15th: If no wind, line is bunker or just right of it. Really big hitters can take on the middle of the hill on RHS. Do not miss green on left: deep bunkers, or long: big run-off. Putts don;t normally break as much as you think on this green
16th: Take plenty of club. Tough rough if you miss well right, tough up & down if you miss left. Take your pick!
17th: Really depends on the wind. Long and big off the tee, aim slightly right of white marker stone to get over the end of the fairway makes it an easier 2nd but it's in the lap of the Gods if you don;t get it far enough. Right corner of fairway is best percentage play. Shorter hitters can go up the left but it's a blind 2nd. Chip from short of the green is almost guaranteed to come up short. NEVER give a putt on this green!
18th: There are two white stones, two red and white little sticks and a flagpole in the distance. The red and white sticks mark the left and right edge of the fairway bu tit slopes from right to left if you hit it big. The big hitters should aim over the right little red & white stick (will put you on RHS of fairway), normal hitters over white stone and short hitters can go for the left edge of fairway where it's a shorter carry. Check where the pin is before going out: if it's RHS, you need to be on LHS of fairway and vice versa!

Leave the lob wedges in the boot and practice with the putter/ 7 iron.

    Enjoy!!

So there's only a subset who can actually take home the prize. This increases my chances :D

From the rules for anyone who is unsure:

    Captains Prize
The Captains prize will normally be the last event of the year. To win the Captains prize you must have returned at least 3 cards in the given year and have your subscription paid in full. The winner will be awarded the perpetual Boards.ie Captains Prize Claret Jug Trophy for the period of 1 year, which can be engraved with the winners details. In addition, there will be a better than usual selection of prizes on offer.

The current years captain may participate in the event and may win the Claret Jug and collect the Golfer of the Year points, but may not collect the main prize. It shall be passed down to second position.

Friday forecast has improved a bit, windy but most of the rain looks to be blowing over by 12-1, so hopefully that holds true & we get away with it

After a lot of elbow grease I managed get most of the champagne stains off it.:) No chance of me holding on to it this year but it looks like it will be returning to county kildare.

You've just handed tigerwoods1 money and you don't even know it yet :D

I reckon the champ could be the man to do the double this year with unfinished business after withdrawing late on in Killarney stable mate mackers money could be a good indicator;).

I have to admit I seem to focus a little better with a few bob down but I have lost a lot more this year than I have won. No form this season only broke 100 once on my own course probably played my best against Charlie at moyvalley couldn’t have him winning his first ever bet( he might get addicted):D
But the most enjoyable memory of a golf bet I will ever have was when roadrunner half way through the round though he could take a few bob off me in last years captains in Killarney, as soon as the bet was agreed I birdied the next two holes which I never done before, his face was priceless:)

How did it go today lads?

Savage wind. No rain thankfully although the last group may have caught some coming up the last.

Nice enough course, some great holes. But. There is always a but......... Off the fairway, the rough is to penal, loose balls way to easy a yard off the the fairway, it is just to thick.

But...... another but ;) technically I only lost the one ball. :D

Lost a couple of Provo's after amazing luck in finding my first a few times when it really should have been gone.

Couple of very respectable scores in the 13 players, others were not bad considering the conditions.

    Tomorrow will be very interesting

Just noticed this evening that the little red and white stick denoting RHS is gone. Line for a big hit is between the two white stones. FYI, the right hand white stone is the marker for the 2nd to 17.

Forgot to mention yesterdays highlight. :D

    Standing on the third tee.
Charlie about to hit his Provo and the wind picks up....... His trolley take off, I run after it and just miss it as it goes over the edge of about a 30 foot drop and can only watch as it does a perfect tumble and finishes right way up at the bottom without anything falling out of the bag :)
