Nothing, as far as I know, county manager retired and that was the end of it,

Bit like or infamous waste collector,

So since January the independent mica group have not met with the mica action group. Or I wonder is it that neeley himself hasn't met with them. Whatever is happening there is a good bit of noise about him on Twitter.

I don't agree with this at all. It should not be the governments job to test blocks or timber or cars etc etc. If any company selling a product are saying the are meeting standard XYZ and if it comes to pass they are not - the company should have all assets seized, director's get jail time (and anyone working in the company that is facilitating the practice) plus the insurance company that was underwriting should be taking financial responsibility as they are the ones under writing the company.

In fairness anyone using blocks from this company needs locking up considering the amount of coverage this has got.

I'd agree with you regarding seizing assets and jailing people producing bad material, but this is Ireland. That won't happen and instead the State will have to step in and bear the cost. In this case, the millionaires who caused this will remain millionaires, especially after it was announced there will not be any inquiry into the issue.

Same can be said for the insurance companies, who has washed their hands too easily of this.

And the banks, who have houses on their balance sheets worth maybe 250k, but worth next to nothing in reality unless fixed.

And thats why I said if it happens now again, then the Gov have no-one to blame but themselves. They need to put the systems and standard in place NOW, and ensure there is proper testing and reporting of data so that there is accountability.

I see MM is talking positive again this morning, lets hope he is a man of his word

The government are going to make an announcement regarding the scheme on the 9th of November. Fingers crossed that it will be much better than the last one. I'm not expecting 100% for every scenario but I'd like to think that people's principle dwelling will be covered with a lesser scheme for second homes and businesses. I'd also imagine that there will be caps in place, which makes sense, as long as it takes into account the current rising costs of materials.

They need to get started on homes that's for sure. The longer it's left the bigger disaster it will be. I was in my local co-op last week. Cracks all over the place. The local secondary school is the same. We dont want to end up in a situation where these buildings are closed due to safety concerns.

I get the notion there'll plenty of talking but little action, there's nothing in this for the government parties.

In case there's still people out there who are wondering what mica is, and why homeowner's are making such a lot of noise about it, just watch this very short video.

And imagine this was your home.

Demolition cost? You could do it yourself in a couple of hours.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,700 ✭✭✭Penfailed

The material still must be drawn away to an approved tip.

Every mica house is going to end up going the same way. Hairline cracks don't stay like that for long. We've given up filling and painting over the cracks as we're throwing good money after bad. They simply open up wider...

That's what I thought, whoever is peddling the story that everything is just bulldozed and tipped has a lot to answer for,

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,602 ✭✭✭jj880

This is why IS 465 needs fixed.

It was pure chance that she didnt go ahead with outer leaf. She could now be sitting in a house with a new outer leaf and crumbling internal walls.

People need to realise this is a possibility for all outer leaf fixes unless more research is carried out and more deleterious materials are tested for. Shocking.

Mc Conalogue being very evasive on TWIP earlier,

Saw that, seemingly €350k with right to appeal and no other costs, rental etc being considered , at least that I think I heard is going to be put to cabinet in 2 weeks 🤔

Do the blocks get checked for hardness under BS or ISO Standards?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 46,994 ✭✭✭✭muffler

There's a lot of them so can you confirm which BS and ISO numbers you refer to?

If you want a real insight into how Donegal County Council works keep an eye out for the Inish Times newspaper on Wednesday. It is a mica related story and will be explosive.

When is this new government announcement on the redress scheme due?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,700 ✭✭✭Penfailed

It was supposed to be tomorrow but has been pushed back. I'm not sure now when it will actually be announced.

I guess it will be different to the Irish Times article on Monday

I'd just wonder a little at the line "there is anxiety in the Coalition that any failure to settle the matter definitively in Donegal could jeopardise the Dáil seats of Fianna Fáil minister Charlie McConalogue and former Fine Gael minister Joe McHugh."

I mean, I suppose folk with mica properties will vote for whomever they think might deliver something to them. And I'd guess Donegal builders would similarly vote if they thought there would be a well-funded scheme in the county.

But if you're not a builder, and not in a mica impacted house, (which I guess leave 80% of people) will folk not just do the usual Father Ted style "sorry for your trouble", and vote for whomever they vote for?

"I guess it will be different to the Irish Times article on Monday"

Yes a different story - I would not promote a pathetic article like that. Cassidys have been in business since the 1940s. They know how to make high quality blocks and ensure that are not defective. They can play victim all they want but they didnt care when it wasnt their family being ruined mentally and financially. They deserve zero sympathy. That article is them trying to cod people who dont know the real story of this yet. Nothing more. EDIT: Perhaps also trying to avoid any kind of prosecution or asset seizure however unlikely that may be in this country.

The story Im talking about has the potential to go national and change the decision not to have an inquiry into this scandal.

"But if you're not a builder, and not in a mica impacted house, (which I guess leave 80% of people) will folk not just do the usual Father Ted style "sorry for your trouble", and vote for whomever they vote for?"

You'd be surprised. A lot of people have family and/or close friends devastated by this. McConalogue and McHugh know they are in serious danger if this isnt sorted well before the next election. People have had enough of voting for spoofers just because they are local or their parents voted FF/FG.

If it is published online when the paper comes out tomorrow I will post it here. Sometimes Inish Times articles appear on donegallive.ie

If you could post a link would be great.
