Never really watched a hockey game until Ireland v USA. Impressed with the skills. But very impressed with the pace. Constant movement. When a free was given it was taken in seconds unlike football. No dissent. (Why?) Great fitness levels required.

Green cards, if the umpire blows for a free hit and the person who gave it away tries to stop it they are more than likely get a warning, but if they do it within the 23 they will get a green card which is 2 mins sin bin.

Also with the free hit there is no need to wait until the opposing team is 5 yards away before taking it. You can take the free hit to yourself run and the opposing player can’t tackle you if they are with in 5 yards. Ball has to travel 5 yards before they can attempt a tackle. Rolling unlimited subs also help with the constant pace

I see. But no arguing with the ref. No harraunging. That's good. No-one rolling around looking for frees. No simulation. All very refreshing.

Who are the Brazil of world women's hockey? Who is the Ronaldo or Messi?

One player can speak to the ref at a time, does not have to be the captain. If more than one player comes to talk to the ref they run the risk of getting a green card. At this level each team also has one video review, but if they ask for a review and it is right they keep it again they have to ask a question for it that is yes no answer. If they ask for a review and it is wrong they lose it.

Netherlands would be the favourites for this World Cup and keep an eye on Eva De Goede

I didn't even realise this was on till I saw about the result today. I thought the hockey forum here was mostly for the ice variation

Why not have it for both, since field hockey is played more here than Ice

I watch ice hockey. Only time I've watched field hockey was at the Olympics. I forgot the game was on today. Will definitely watch the quarter final.

Yeah it makes no sense how there is almost no field hockey discussion, considering it's much more popular here

When will our QF be played? of course we have the dead rubber, for us, against the English before that.

Any good website for following it?

A couple of years ago I put in a request for a split on the hockey to field and ice ( although to be fair in Ireland if you mention hockey people presume it’s field hockey ) I was turned down .. the hockey population is bigger than is realized in Ireland. Shame we haven’t a dedicated “field” hockey forum as the chat totally gets lost amongst the ice hockey threads

    Fingers crossed for the girls.

    Brilliant performance by the team.
World rankings make interesting reading for the semi-final make up. Germany (6th) and India (10th) are the only top ten teams on Ireland's side of the draw. Spain are 11th, Belgium 13th & Italy 17th.
The other side has Netherlands (1st), England (2nd), Argentina (3rd), New Zealand (4th), Australia (5th) & Korea (9th). Good move not beating England today :)

English organizers and England were expected to be playing at that time from the Pool stage so I am guessing they changed them around to have the England game as top billing

Really hopes it gets more popular here. The only field hockey I've watched B4 this was the Olympics.

I'm no expert on the game but both teams looked nervy (that can happen in the knockout rounds of any sport, especially with teams not used to playing in semis or finals).

Fair play to the goalkeeper and the three girls who scored in the shootout.....that took real bottle considering the pressure they must have felt

Wouldn’t it be great if they didn’t have to pay to play for their country going forward !

Have to laugh at the event organiser keep changing the times of the pass back for Ireland games tonight that game was was set for 8:15 and they were scheduled for the later semi final but because Ireland topped the group and not England it has all be changed

They're not unique in that. Many of our amateur international athletes have to pay their own way.

Hockey is the 4th biggest sport in this country behind GAA, rugby and soccer. Kinda goes under the radar a bit.

Pity the funding for the sport doesn't reflect that.

Also media coverage is almost non existent. Although the Irish hockey association should be pushing media coverage more it is still seen as an elite sport and many people think it's only for private schools and the toffs!

It's a great sport and many people play competitive hockey well in to their 40s. It's good for winter as pitches are almost always playable no matter what the weather.

Time we took it more seriously as we are now in the top 10 playing nations both women and men

I was involved in the game for a long time, both as a player and umpire, great to see the game now being highlighted in the media. Best of luck to the girls at the weekend.

I know the Mens team are ranked 10 but last time I checked the Girls were at 16. Do the results in the HWC mean the girls move up to 10?

Unfortunately there is no money for the game in Ireland be it north or south. I suggest it is because it is seen as a D4 sport by the general public. Obviously those of us who are involved in the sport day to day know thats not true but perhaps there is that perception among the general public.

Most of the mens squad will be plying their trade in Europe come September which unforunately will devalue our All Ireland EYHL this season and domestic mens hockey in general. Employing a coach based in Holland with a full time role in Kampong is not going to help anything in the domestic game either.
