Should the Isle of Man become part of Ireland?

For example, if there was to be a united Ireland, should the Isle of Man become Irish territory? After all, there is legend that the mythological giant Finn McCool took a lump out of the ground to through at an opponent across the Irish Sea, but it missed and landed in water and became the Isle of Man. The void left by the clump of land filled with water and became Lough Neagh, and the pebble became Rockall.

Regardless of mythology, the Isle of Man isn't important for anything apart from being a tax haven and the birthplace of the Bee Gees. The U.K. certainly couldn't give a sh**e about it.

Say if Rockall was to become an offshore part of County Donegal, and the Isle of Man became the 33rd county or other territory of a United Republic, what would be the problem with that? There are less than 100,000 people living in the IOM right now.

I think there is potential for Mann within Ireland.

    What are your opinions?

Would you favour the Isle of Man becoming part of a united Ireland? 120 votes

Well, if you take the Isle of Mann, you might as well take Newfoundland as well.

The Isle of Man shouldn't be part of Ireland but I would welcome it into a Celtic League that would include an independent Ireland, Scotland, Wales, Cornwall and Brittany.

Good idea, we could then reclaim Celtic's Isle of Man born Kieran Tierney back from Scotland.
Imagine, Tierney and Coleman as our two wingbacks!

It would have to be put to the Manx to decide in a referendum i doubt they have even given this the slightest bit of thought and neither has anyone else but the op apparently.

I would LOVE to read the Irish submission to the Hague Boundary Commission for a territorial claim over the Isle of Man on that basis.

Sounds like something one of the Healy-Raes would propose!

Maybe we could also claim ownership of Israel based on the Book of Invasions.

Would we have to rename it to appease Louise O’Neill?

In what reality would this ever happen? What benefit would this bring to the island/s?

    Where does this end?

A policy of Lebensraum and the invasion of Iceland?

It would benefit them immensely as the Isle of Man is not part of the EU and as such people born there (though legally British citizens) are not entitled to employment in any EU country unless they have lived in the UK mainland for at least 5 years.

Not sure how Ireland would benefit exactly, but open to being enlightened!

Christ no! If they became part of Ireland, we’d have to subsume all things Manx. We’d be known around the world for having **** ugly cats!

Never gonna happen. It would cost BILLIONS to construct and would not recoup its investment even if the bridge carried road, high speed rail and pipelines. There is no infrastructure on either side so that would all have to be build, and the nearest city on the Scottish side would be Glasgow.

Passenger travel from Dublin to Glasgow would still be faster by air, you'd want to have a Mag Lev train for the route to be remotely competitive. The route would not be used for cargo either as the ferry to Holyhead still offers more direct access to the UK's economic heartlands, unless the cargo is going specifically to Scotland.

Sure we might as well grab it if it's available. No good in letting it go to someone else

What about a cable car? Could be got to run at the same speed as a ferry or close to it. No need to go for the absolute shortest distance you could put one terminal near Belfast. Great for the footprint too

There is lots of land on the Isle of Man - think of the potential. TT races would bring tourism income.

County Louth is considerably larger than the Isle of Man.

What other advantages do you see to this hypothetical?
