    Where are you going to find someone who believes only the things that all the people of Ireland believe?

    It's nonsense to begin a search for a president on those terms. What you are looking for is somebody who will not impose their beliefs on the Irish people accepting that they may personally believe in whatever.

    Who said anything about any of that?

    When the suggestion that the President loses privacy came up, Joan Freeman's comment that he was keeping his privacy tonight anyway was quick and to the point

    I do think a strong a political figure head could have rattled Higgins in this election, other than that it’s a forgone conclusion

    John F Kennedy and Jesus in a voting pact wouldn't rattle Higgins in this election.

    Casey = 1

    Freeman = 3

    Ni Riada = 6

    Duffy = 8

    Scored out of ten.

    Concur with those currants.

    He personally may or may not advocate for hunting, he isn't advocating running the hounds around the Aras and The Phoenix Park as President though, as a 'representation' of the people.
    MDH is a socialist, he isn't using the presidency to advocate we all become one.

    You'll never find a candidate whose personal tastes or beliefs chime with everyone.
    Why bother trying?

    100% For that reason alone i would not vote for him.

    Im still solidly Gallagher after that, can understand how Michael D voters wouldn't be moved by that either

    Very moderate of you. Aren't there other more stridently right-wing candidates to be voted for?

    (Or indeed, less cringey ones, but that seems less relevant ones here.)

    Think I'll be voting for Freeman. The rest of them are dodgy

    Sadly With Hitler, Pinochet and Mussolini off the scene, Trump is taken and Farage is too busy down the boozer waiting for the red phone to ring from may, So Gallagher will have to do.

    And I'm guessing Freeman might be the wrong sort of right-wing, but where does Casey come in your preference ranking?

    Basically a rehash of the previous radio debates, in that we didn't learn much new from the candidates, other than Ní Ríada being prepared to wear the poppy. PK on Wednesday should have more bite, and Gallagher will have to give a 9/10 performance if he's to make any meaningful impression this year.

    Whilst PK has to be an improvement on tonight’s effort, part of me feels that unless Michael D brings Brod and Sioda along to the debate it’s going to be every bit as uninspiring as tonight was.

    I’d imagine that Duffy and Ni Riada will gain a bit off Gallagher on the back of tonight. Freeman looks painfully out of her depth, and Casey isn’t even taking it seriously himself. Claire Byrne called him out on exactly why he’s decided to stand, and he didn’t even really deny it.

    I posted this in another forum, but it's relevant.

    Joan playing the victim. "people are criticising me for taking money from a man I've known for 40 years, wah wah wah".

    People are criticising her because she took 130,000 from a man who is one of the people at the head of a multinational pyramid scheme that is literally ruining millions of peoples lives, driving people to suicide, destroying families, marriages and relationships, and she runs a fecking charity which aims to support people who are suicidal or bereaved by suicide. It's pricks like him that will keep her opening more offices.

    Gallagher will be any wing for who pays.

    Michael D would be better off semi retiring and pay Gallagher to promote the platform of the third international.

    He could expense it.

    Freeman has her Iona links and I had literally never heard of her before this. Really don't care for her charity work.

    Casey is like your weird teenage cousin who just says whatever comes to his head because he's too wrote off on energy drinks. He says things he thinks would be popular because the words are popular but the sentence is just silly or incoherent "all woman panel"

    Doesn't matter where he advocates it. That's like saying that you don't care what any of the other candidates have done up until as long as they don't do it when president. Are you saying the slate is wiped clean at that point?

    Not sure if you're purposely playing dumb by mentioning he's not going to advocate we all get involved in blood sports. Are you implying that you're ok with all other candidates beliefs as it doesn't matter?

    First debate I've watched. And the last, life is too short.
    That was abysmal.

    If you genuinely believe he would advocate for hunting as President then by all means don't vote for him.
    I wouldn't vote for Freeman because I think she would advocate for her seriously weird religious views.

    But saying they are 'unfit to represent the Irish people' because they have a private view on something is ridiculous. You won't find anyone in the country that has a set of views that somebody else somewhere doesn't feel is representative of them.

    Duffy+1 just said "very unique", and then "goodest".

    The hunting was bad enough, but I'm out, Gav.

    "Any women?"

    It provided some entertainment at least. I propose the addition of a trap door for the next one. Just to provide some respite when the comic value of an answer fades into toe curling cringe.

    The character and views of the individual feeds into why people would vote for a candidate. So it's pretty logical for Duffy's views on fox hunting to impact the voting choice of those who aren't okay with it. Doesn't matter if he's planning to advocate or not.

    Yes, of course they will.
    But you will not find a candidate whose entire private views will fit with everyone else's. So you have to decide if they will keep them private or not. If they do, so what then? Are you saying that candidates have to hold the same views as you?

    I aim for slightly velvet and utterly impenetrable, but I'll take what I can get!

    Freeman's "poor me" act is excruciating. Wouldn't it be terrible if future presidential elections were... like most part ones, then, as opposed to the nonsense of this and the last one.

    "But to answer your question," says Duffman, before not answering the question at all.
