That's exactly why I'm surprised they let her announce the "correction". It's a controversial topic and better Higgins make his own statement to the people on the matter.. not have RTE act as spokesman for him .

But by not fact checking and clarifying last time is what caused the trouble.

Even if it wasn't a presidential debate, falsehoods still need to be clarified when asked to do so.

I can understand why claire Byrne made that correction given what happened on her radio show and the frontline incident last time out. RTÉ I'd imagine don't want any of that kind of hassle.

What happened on her radio show?
A labour TD(name escapes me )made a comment about a Sinn Fein panellist and RTE were taken to court over it.

Why was she rightly told to take a hike ? She is probably under orders from the RTÉ management to not let anything even slightly inaccurate was said by the four candidates.

Well they actually bothered to show up for the debate and were angry that MDH is looking to stick his oar in even though he declined to attend the debate.

Peter Casey is fixated on the presidents dogs.

He's like the guy who shouted "Ya little midget parasite" at MDH, only minus the eloquence and profundity.

Has anyone asked Ni Riadas neighbours down in west Cork if they feel part of a 'marginalised community" ?

    "young people"
    "marginalised communities"
    "women"
sure throw them all in there, nothing about capability for the position, just the luck of the race and gender and age lottery.

Casey's treating the debate like a comedy gig and the audience is following along

MDH should never have said he would be a one term wonder.

No, so now we have all this shyte PLUS him!

We are paying for all this AGAIN. Bollx. Sorry for the bad language but honestly our President just needs to be a quiet and diplomatic person. No need for these debates.

About what anyway? The President cannot be involved in politics or anything to do with those policies. What a joke.

Yeah when a person isn't there(whether that's a right or a wrong call) you know if you listen to any RTÉ show they will never let a comment about someone who isn't there to stand. They can't.

Why is it assumed that everyone automatically wants a United Ireland?

It's one of those things that sounds good if you're asked in the pub or one of those random surveys... but when you delve a bit deeper into it, it's not quite that simple - and something most would probably be against if asked to pay for it (as would be required).

A vote for Joan Freeman is a vote against suicide.
If you don't like suicide (and of course there are two sides to every story) vote for Joan.

No fan of Higgins to be honest and think he's taking the piss by standing again at this stage... but as with the rest of our political system, the alternatives are so much worse that suddenly he becomes the only real choice for most people.

Not about the panellist -- ironically, it was the SF TD that named the individual, who then sued... neither TD, but RTE! The individual first alluded to, and then named, works for SF on Dublin City Council, IIRC.

If you're going to choose the president by popular vote, this sort of circus is pretty much inevitable in today's media age.

It's in the nature of the position. Unless you want a monarchy. Or a president appointed by the Dáil, or some other body.

International comparisons make Ireland's system look like the least-worst option.

Casey's favourite part of the constitution is to get rid of the air force and replace them with helicopters, did I pick that up correctly?

  • Registered Users Posts: 39,644 ✭✭✭✭Itssoeasy
