There has to be a reason it was parked in the shed in the first place four years ago and left to rot.

300,000 k on an engine that was likely ragged for most if its life. No thanks.

I would say the opposite. Who’s gonna do 300k in one of those in the first place? Lot of mileage In a very thirsty car. I’m going to say the complete opposite and say it was more than likely very well minded to have those kinda kms

Edit Also the very small amount of owners helps this theory.

I would also say it’s parked up because the new owner wasn’t as enthused about taxing or fueling it.

So to summarise, I tbink it was it Priest In the kitchen with the knife.

    What to be checked

On sisters 2007 1.8 which she bought maybe 5 years ago the catalytic converter gave up soon after she bought it and also the built in stereo was according to her making wierd noises even when off and she thought she smelt burning at one stage so she had that replaced. The dash display air-conditioning and stereo gave and has not worked since (she never actually got it fixed, just guesses). Water leaks into the boot also. All this happened in her first few months of ownership and I have to say other than that it seems a fairly solid car. I don't know if all models are susceptible to to all or any of the above problems or if she was just unlucky.

They seem to be pretty uncomfortable to sit in the back of compared to other modern family cars. Very bumpy and clatters at the back over holes in the road and uneven surfaces.

Nice looking low mileage 430D coupe here, 1 previous owner and full BMW service history claimed:

Not a M Sport but the coupe hides it better and those wheels make it look well imo, plus it has the sport seats normally found in the M Sport.

Does the dreaded old timing chain issue present itself with the 3l diesel beamer engine? Beautiful car. Wonder if it comes with adaptive dampers and adaptive headlights as part of the luxury package. Don't see many luxury's on the road these days.

I think the 6 cylinders have escaped the timing chain issue mainly affected the 4 cylinders. However it will still will need to be checked for the ERG cooler replacement ðŸ˜.

Thanks for that. This might avoid the issue altogether and not a bad option apart from a fairly bad dent over the driver rear wing:

I don’t think the 6 cylinders were that much less likely to give timing trouble, I think it’s because the 4 cylinder is so much more common that you see so many of them.

As far as I know, they are the same as the 4 cyl engine but with 2 more cylinders. The reason the lower powered versions of the 4 cylinder didn't suffer as much, well they run smoother. More power, more bang in the cylinder. More strain on the chain. As the 6 cylinder is inherently a smoother running engine, it doesn't suffer as much.

Contrary to popular belief, modern engines run rougher than older ones. Again, more power, more bang. This is why there are dual mass flywheels, oil filled engine mountings, rubber bushed crankshaft pulleys etc.

Plus it wasn't a great idea in hindsight for BMW to put the chain where they did.

Nice car and spec but strong money for an 11 year old car.

In saying that, you wouldn't get one in from the UK for much less.

This is €13500 including VRT and NoX

17k for a 3 year old Jaguar XF:

Other than it being manual, it still seems too good to be true, eyes wide open on this one.

A moderately unusual car that has a replacement engine but I am failing to see what level of unusual work was done to it. To me much if not all that work is either routine required or preventative maintenance, albeit the seller is probably staying well on top of things for any that is preventative.
The first few words of the ad would put me off. They are either selling or not selling and should take the time to consider before they advertise the car. Also it should be advertised with 147k miles rather than 77k mile because there is 147k miles up on the car. Fair enough they let us know in the description but I'm talking about the headline and in key info.

Yea I don't know who in their right mind would pay 14k for an 11 year old diesel 3 series, let alone one with a replacement engine.

There's a number of anomalies in her advert.

"one previous owner in NI. Purchased at Bmw Belfast as ex demo"...........yet there's a David Prenton Portadown sticker on the back widow and www.jameshennessymotors.ie (not a BMW specialist) tax disc holder.

It's advertised as having 77,000 miles yet we then learn that a replacement used/reconditioned?? engine was put in with coincidently 77,000 miles.......but she doesn't tell us when this was or how many miles ago....was it yesterday or 2/3 years or 20/50 thousand miles ago?

"The shell has 147,000 miles".......Ehm, has she also replaced all the interior, electrics, lights etc?? What does it say on the odometer?

The seller is being very obviously manipulative !

  • Registered Users Posts: 19,854 ✭✭✭✭MetzgerMeister

^ could be the same as mine. I had a brand new engine fitted a month or so ago at 67,000 km. Engine is now at 500km but the rest of the car is still at 67k.

    And no, it's only the 2l n47

The only thing that matters really is the 147k miles on the odometer and possibly the reason why the first engine was replaced.

That BMW looks like a salvage project that is now being sold as a pristine example. You could cut through the flannel and value it correctly, but with that opening gambit in the ad, would you bother?

I'd be inclined to let the seller "enjoy the ride". Hes earned it.

I know a 335 is an entirely different kind of thing than a 320 or even 330, but €14k for an 11 year old 3 series saloon? I would have guessed maybe half that would be about right, no?

  • Registered Users Posts: 51,179 ✭✭✭✭bazz26

This is a much better proposition than that 335d, even if still a bit expensive for the year:

Id give away a kidney for this. Wheels slightly too big but still looks class. Drove one in 2018 and it was the best engine I ever experienced...

The clocks are digital and it just takes a few button presses to change them over from mph to kmh

Look at the reviews by Sarah Mooney and Ryan O’Sullivan. Notice anything weird?

Anyone buying a car for anything more than banger money should be doing a history check regardless. It's money well spent.

Second cheapest similar 2017 XF manual is asking 20k and even the cheapest smaller XE with nearly 120k miles is asking similar money so definitely thread carefully with that one.
